£$£ saving Simple cheep (plastic tropical) plants/scenery.
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:56:45 PM »
Excluding this:

I've been working on plants for my board/club so first up

After a visit to the local animal shop I picked up this aquarium plant ball for £9.99,
I got it home and starting pulling it apart.
I got bord half way and did a stock take to find a couple of bare stalks but in theory you get 104 of theese

for your tenner.
Well I cracked out the glue gun and nome nuts(bolts, I don't know what there called) and using 4 (2 per plant) made theese

I Have forgotten to go to the hardware store, so I need to go shopping to get some more heavy metal.
Till then thats all for now.

Ok to make the plants that I feature (should anyone be interested)
You need some bolts(nuts, whatever :P),

Some plants,
Scatter,
Glue Gun,
string/wire,
Clippers.

To make the small one take one plant and glue into nut,
take secound plant, remove base and tie together,
Glue secound plant into first,
Cover nut in scatter.

To make the bigger plants.
Randomly stick plants to a big fyling base then again cover with scatter.

BTW the GW trees are so unstable I had to stick them to washers.

Looking good.  This is such an expensive hobby that you have to save a $ when you can.  If you have some imagination, you can end up with some truly unique terrain.

Of course, make sure it blocks TLOS!

This post will explain how to make some ye olde pan scourer bushes.

Take one green pan scourer

And cut into strips 15X4 cm strips

Score down the middle (long side) and glue in half ( long ways).
Cut a peice of thick card/mounting board 15X4 cm

and glue pan scourer to card.
Paint base and glue flock/scatter to pan scourer.

One finished cover in pva glue/clear coat to seal on the flock/scatter

Wow, I love that scourer hedge/shrub look. Thats trully excellent.

Also, for the aquarium plants, you should look for around, as there are many many variety of these, which can make for some real cool varieties of tree. Also, a light coating of flock (better if not green- I like purples and reds), will make a nice alien tree/ tree covered in fungi look if done well.

Again, nice work.
Some of my favorites:

Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day- Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

I lay in bed last night looking up at the stars in the sky, and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?

It matters not whether you win or lose; what matters is whether I win or lose

If ther's something you can deffinetely rely on it's gotta be- oh, theres not

Well, I dunno how it would be taken to post a link to another board/site, but if you look at terragenesis.co.uk, there's like a million different things and ideas for you!

Make a bunker. A tyranid bunker.
Maybe the regiment consists entirely of Ninjas who were orphaned by Dark Eldar slavers. With a score to settle, these black clad night assassins fight against their hated parent-murderers with laser shurikens and untold ferocity.

Some excellent ideas in this thread, well done. I remember when I was young I used to make trees from Pan scourers and pieces of wood. They looked rubbish. Damn my modeling techniques!

I still have a tree made 10 years ago from a bottle brush.
Hmn ok I have a list of things now

Foam core walls with Home made foam core!
Warp gates,
Egg box tank traps,
Matchstick fences as my budgy hurdles (lolly pop fences) are over size,
Polystyrene & lolly pop (sturing stick) bridges,
Polystyrene hills (a must).

Thats all for now but before I go I leave you with this.

TIP: Disposable Xacto blades can be recycled by sharpening them using weatstone/diamond sharpining tools ( from any cheep tool shelf)
TIP2 : Cheep Builders pva glue can be brought in big tubs for cheep. When watered down 50/50 will last for years in a sealed tub.
