'nids for 500 Points?
« on: November 5, 2007, 10:36:41 AM »
Hey guys.  I'm brand new to the hobby - haven't bought any models yet - but I wanted to see if I could throw together a Tyranid 'core army' as a thought experiment.  I understand Tyranids are pretty hard to run for less than 1,000, but let me know if this line-up is significantly missing anything.  (My biggest concern is that, without anything really awesome in close combat, I'll tie my opponents up with my swarms and then not have anything with which to finish them off.  Genestealers seem the obvious choice, but I'm not sure what to drop.)

HQ
3x Tyranid Warrior - Enhanced Senses, Toxin Sacs, Rending Claws
2x   Deathspitter
1x   Venom Cannon

TROOPS
9x Termagant w/ Spinefists
8x Termagant w/ Fleshborer
9x Hormagaunt
9x Hormagaunt
3x Ripper Swarm

HEAVY SUPPORT
1x Zoanthrope, Warp Blast, Synapse Creature

115+54+56+90+90+30+65 = 500 points exact

the gribbly list is valid, though I have seen this type of list soryly abused at 500 points.

imagine a mech guard list that includes a leman russ. Everything will short at your zoan then the rest of your army
cant do anything. also KoS and mech eldar, fish up fury, etc etc

the easy solution is to put some monsterous creature in your list.

an alternative is to include something with rending claws.

using both is also possible.

Yeah, it's kinda difficult to see what's going to do any damage to your opponent with this list... I'd start by selecting a single really hard damage-dealing unit - either a small unit of 'stealers, or a cheap carnifex (a devilfex with 2 twin-linked devourers and enhanced senses would be perfect).

Then fill out the rest of the points to support this core unit...
