Just found out that spraypainting non-treated styrofoam can give great corroded effects for 40k'ish buildings btw :D

Interesting... May I request a pic of that particular effect you are talking about? I would like to see how it does actually look like with regard to the way you did that.

made pictures of the spraypainted piece of foam.
Took the liberty of painting it as well so it looks corroded.
Will prepare a bit of wall and not paint that for comparison.

Haven't been able to upload pictures this weekend though.

Great stuff, just looking through your pics again and had noticed the bases on some of the buildings. The cardboard might give you a few probs with warping and such. How you planning on doing/finishing them.

Wow, very impressive, ditto on all the guys above.  Tag for updates and howtos!

Oh and a question:  for the pink foam, it looks like you just took a ballpoint pen to 'draw' in the masonry, pushing hard enough to grove it?   And did you take the film off the foam before working with it?

I used a knife to score +/- 2mm deep grooves before using a ballpoint to actually draw the masonry.

The bases are indeed made of corrugated cardboard but I covered them in plaster to give them some rigidity.

I'm currently painting some of the buildings and notice that even though the process is slow a little paint, not even details, make the buildings look good already.

That made me decide to paint the buildings up to a certain degree of detailing and then get on with building the table before finishing the paintwork on the buildings for which I will take my time.

I still have to get my hands on more foam (about 6 sheets of 24"x48"x1 1/4") and some MDF to assemble the table. That would cost me some $75 which I already scheduled for next month.

I'll post updates tomorrow.

Are you cutting the doors and windows out after you paint?  ???

nope, made window frames already and I will paint the windows since I haven't detailed the interior.

The doors are already in there but are still black.

Actually, I made a typical beginners fault there.
Completely forgot about buildings having windows  :-[

The newer buildings I'm currently working on all have cut out windows though. :)
I'm still learning.

You may want to consider getting some clear acetate sheets from an office supply store (used for overhead transparencies) and putting them in the windows after painting them, to produce a smooth, shiny glass-like effect.

Assuming you didn't already think of that yourself, of course.

Or use the plastic from blister packs (If they still sell them)

Great work there, but I am concerned over the bases - I hope they don't warp!

ah, didn't think of that indeed.
Should give that a try with blisters, see how that works out :D

The bases are now covered in plaster and edges have a silicone cover to prevent them from chipping.
They look sturdy enough but if I find outthey're not I'll have to cut them off and replace with MDF nonetheless.

More updates coming up soon.
Did 4 further buildings amongst which a coach house and a raided and barricaded temple as well as the bridge in some previously posted illustration.
