Praetorian Expeditionary Force 2000 pts
« on: May 8, 2007, 06:52:04 PM »
Hello All,

This list is a continuing work in progress for a montly local 2000 pt tourney for which my beloved Praetorians have gone 2-2-2. With wins against another IG and Nids, Ties vs. two different Space Marine armies and losses to Dark Eldar and a drubbing by Necrons.  So this is my new idea

The 20th Royal Praetorian Expeditionary Force

Doctrines=Special Weapon Squads, Rough Riders, Drop Troops, Conscripts, Iron Discipline

HeadQuarters
Heroic Senior Officer: Lord Major Gonville Bromhead, 3rd Baron of Praetoria; Power Weapon, Iron Discipline = 80
Veteran Standard bearer= 11

Fire Support Squad/Autocannons=95
Antitank Squad/Lascannons=110
Special Weapon Squad, 2 grenade launchers and Demo, Drop Troops=69
Special Weapon Squad, 2 grenade launchers and Demo, Drop Troops=69
Col. Schaffer’s Last Chancers with 4 specialists and 4 demo charges=236

Troops
Prince of Praetoria Platoon
Junior Officer, Iron Discipline, Drop Troops=45
10 Troops with Plasma, Heavy Bolter=80
10 troops with Plasma, Heavy Bolter=80

Earl of Lusitania Platoon
Junior Officer, BP, 3 flamers Iron Discipline=64
Command Half Track (Chimera) ML, HB, Smoke, Searchlight=94
10 troops with Plasma, Lascannon=95
10 Troops with Plasma, Lascannon=95

Baron Woodcock Armored Fist
Chimera Transport with ML, HB, HS, smoke=100
10 troops with Plasma=70

20 Conscripts=80

Fast Attack
8 Lancers with Hunting lances and Vet Sgt =94
2 Lascannon Sentinels, Drop Troops=110

Heavy Support
Leman Russ Demolisher  with Hull Heavy Bolter and Extra Armor =160
Leman Russ Demolisher  with Hull Heavy Bolter and Extra Armor =160

Total=2000

Usually two of the three games in the tourney allow Deep Striking so the list is really two elements, the drop troops and the rest as a standard gun line.  Just recently added the LC'ers but have used them with some success in the past.

Thanks in advance

Firstly, I would drop the grenade launchers in the demo charge squads. Those squads should not even be exposed to the enemy before they throw their charges, so the grenades should not even be fired. And they are so expensive in those squads. Secondly, those last chancers are really expensive. If you like them for fluff reasons, then I commend your use of them. However, they are not that effective for their points cost. I would drop them, and use the points on something else (like three guard squads). Thirdly, I would give your rough rider sergeant a power weapon so that squad is not totally useless after it uses its lances. And finally, I would give your weaponless platoon command something to play around with. Those command squads have so many options, it is a shame not to use them. But this list looks very good.

Thanks for the reply!

For the grenade launchers, your points are very valid.  I usually run flamers with the DC because I have to be within 6" to throw the demo anyway.  But the problem arises when you deviate and too many times I would deviate more than 6" away and be summarily wiped out.  At least with the GL's I should always have a shot and they are cheaper then the melta or plasma option.

As for the Last Chancers, again they are very expensive and I think the key with them is

a. choosing the right targets to make back your points
b. trying to keep at least one alive for victory point denial
c. shock value, having your opponent change tactics and concentrate on the LC'ers rather than other targets

So I will give it a go at the next tourney, but again I think you may be right.

As for the RR vets, I again used to run the pw and even would give a sgt the honorifica, but they are such targets that I decided to go bare bones and let the chips fall where they may.
