Progress on painting an entire Tyranid Army
« on: April 22, 2008, 08:20:30 AM »
This thread will follow the progress of my mostly unpainted/badly painted nids into a table-quality painted army.  This will be similar to my space marines painting blog.  I've decided to keep with the paint scheme I started some years ago.  Here are some of the only finished nids I painted back then:

The scheme was supposed to represent nids from a volcanic world so they are obsidion black with lava-colored highlights.

To start with, I want to get together a large number of spinegaunts, warriors, zoanthropes, and genestealers.  These will be the army's core, so they're top priority for modeling and painting.  All warriors and MC's will need magnetized arms because I may change their loadouts a lot.

So far, I've been collecting and stripping second-hand nids.  Here's some from the first batch:

I spent last night converting 12 genestealers with feeder tendrils.  The mouths have been chopped off with a razorblade, and small GS tendrills added.

Next is priming these first models, I'm using a black primer as part of the body will wind up black anyway, possibly saving a little time.

A small update-
Did a once-over basecoat on 34 spinegaunts and some zoans.  They'll need some touching up.

UPDATE-
Ok, first 20 gaunts got basecoat, then a yellow drybrush.  I'll probably follow up with more yellow highlighting:

The other 14 gaunts are cleaned up.

The first two zoans with skin sections basecoated:

The army is starting to come together.  I'm up to 41 gaunts, they're painted except for some basing work:

And lots of partially finished minis.
A trio of zoans.

About 9 warriors, all with magnetized arm sockets.

12 Feeder tendril genestealers.

And the first carnifex, also with magnetized arm sockets.

If I'm fast enough with this batch, might get in a game with them saturday.  :o

UPDATE-
Well, I finished painting 3 carnifexes, 12 warriors, and 12 genestealers.  The arms are still unpainted, but over all I like the result.  Here's everything that's done so far:

Even got a few games in with the army, they're in the batreps forum.   ;D

I have another 30 gaunts I just bought, so it's all out gaunt painting time...

UPDATE- (after like 4 months  ::)  )

Finished my converted gargoyles:

Painted a bunch of magnetized arms, to.  They had a tendency to break off due to the magnets being stronger than the superglue, so I covered all the magnets with epoxy.  Hopefully, this will take care of the problem.  An early stage of the first batch:

Some warriors wearing the new arms:

Unfortunately, some of the warriors are yellow and some red, while the arms are all red.

The army as a whole, so far:

UPDATE-
So I have this old converted broodlord that I made a while back out of genestealers and a sporemine.  It never looked very good, so I've gutted him and redone the model(thus he's partly painted).  The dude he's spearing on a talon is the special character from the battle for macragge box:

with terminator for size comparison:

I positioned him leaping from some rubble, he's got some spore chimneys from a zoanthrope on his back.  I sculpted some extra big tendrils for him, too.  I only have a couple of the new stealers, so they will be his retinue.  Flesh hooks glued to their chests because I don't like the flesh hook heads:

Can you tell me how you made those, looks like converted hormaguants., I’d love to know as I have some spares I can use for this.

UPDATE-
Nearly done painting the broodlord and retinue:

Not sure how I'll do their bases.  Maybe similar to the last batch of stealers, but without the orange.  It seems too bright and doesn't really blend with the yellow and red coats.

UPDATE-
Blord is done.  Started work with my raveners:
