Iyanden's yellow
« on: December 1, 2006, 02:57:14 AM »
Hello fellow Eldar players!

I'm considering starting an Iyanden army, after quite a long pause from miniature gaming I must add. This post might be better suited in the Painting forum, but I dunno.

I'm a bit concerned about the yellow, never had a yellow army! And i'm definitely not a fan of shiny models (trust me, I have a Word bearers army waaaaay to red-inked!! ;D), so I' not sure about ink. How do You paint you're Iyanden ???? or yellow stuff!?

thanks in advance!
// Carl

Found this on GW's site.  I use Iyanden's colours for my Eldar and use a similar technique to this:

My personal preference is to do it in progressive layers of yellow over a black undercoat. Most people will tell you to go for a white base coat for Iyanden, but I find that going for the black gives a fuller colour, with shadows, and not quite as pristine as some others. I go for a black spray, followed by one or two coats of thinned down Bad Moon Yellow, a coat of Golden Yellow, and then finally Yellow Ink.

Results come out like this - 1, 2.

Of course I'm not the best painter or photographer, but that's what works for me. Yellow is a tricky colour to paint, so good luck with it. Find a technique that works for you.
The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

For my Iyanden Yellow: Base coat in black, paint with Bestial Brown, Drybrush/Layer with Bubonic Bown, highlight with Sunburst Yellow and finally the edges or rounded protrusions with white.

Or save yourself time and money and go with Tremclad grey primer, and use Tamiya Yellow-Green or Yellow Paints.

Personaly i'd go with a white under coat, painting yellow over black can be quite tricky. I'm painting the heads of my Eldar yellow and do it as follows.....

spray white, golden yellow then mix golden yellow with a tiny drop of scorched brown (a real tiny dop) then water this down to darken the resesces then golden yellow again mixed with skull white to high light.

This may not be everyones cup of tea but it will give you a nice light yellow that will look more pastel and not shiney.

Best thing to do is try painting one up from black and one from white then just choose the one you like painting and find easier.

Hope this helps

Two methods I use for Yellows

Demour look that contrasts very well with Blues, Green, Reds, and Blacks.
White Primer,
Base coat with Golden Yellow, (sometimes I do ink in the deep recesses; but its not nessecary)
Layer on Sunburst Yellow, (Do not paint shadow areas)
Highlight edges with Badmoon Yellow/White mix.

Agressinve look that still contrasts well; but can stand on its own better.
Black Primer,
Base coat with Vomit Brown,
Layer on Golden Yellow, (Do not paint Shadow areas)
Layer on Sunburst Yellow, (Cover about 70% of last layer)
Highlight edges with Badmoon Yellow/White mix.

Hope that helps, CaHG

I tend to do a black coat primer, undercoat without destroying much of the shadows with bleached bone (I use a very thin coat, maybe apply two-three times), then one or two coats of sunburt yellow. Highlight tends to be a sunburst yellow/white mixture (I tend to use a ratio of 4 to 5 / 1).

For guardians, sometimes I do destroy the shadows, so I'll wash carefully with a brown (beastial brown works well) or flesh wash, watered down (once in a while I'll try chestnut, but my preference is flesh).

Here are some guardians I did a while ago.

basecoat white
layer of golden yellow
wash with flesh wash
another layer of golden yellow (stay out of the recesses)
highlight with sunburst yellow

Eldar - 3000 pts
Dark Eldar - 2500 pts
Tyranids - 1500 pts

Another way, how I do mine quickly:

Prime white, has to be a nice prime job
50/50 chesnut ink, yellow ink mix (I made a new pot for this)
Then just ink them

I high-light them a little as well with Badmoon.
