Eldar v Tau [2500 pts]
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:31:26 AM »
Heya all,

This is an old Ghost Story:

An outcast approaches the Seer Council of the craftworld accompanied by one of the members of the War Council. They turn stating in unison “We have been expecting you, Angelis of Alai-toc. State what we should be expecting in this territory of our kin.”

She reports, “They have set a camp on the other side of the far moon. They have sent two units, as Seer Na’ Nular (an ancient farseer equivalent to Eldrad Ulthran) awaits them, along with the old ones. She stated to proceed with the foretelling story.” Ends her report to the council, and she leaves along with the exarch who escorted her. The seers look at each other and nodding their heads in agreeance. As they walk in their separate directions, younger seers walk out from the crystal dome followed by robot like automatons towards a grand webway.

Meanwhile the night is solemn and quiet, only broken by the rustling of leaves as movements permeate in the cover of darkness. Fire Warriors alongside one of their leaders emerge from the wooded line just shoring from the waters of a once timid lake. Thinking they have come upon an entrance way towards a village that has statues acting as walls for it, suddenly comes alive and moves towards them. Their leader’s last thoughts – “It’s an AMBUSH!!!” was not relayed to the rest of the army, as volleys of darkness engulfs some of his soldiers. The ancient farseer whispers in the wind, “Tis should be a learning lesson for you upstart whelps.”

Scenario Mission: Annihilation – Dawn of War [2500 pts] Eldar setup 12 inches away from center then Tau reacts by emplacing inside a building 18 inches away from center. Divination moves my guards to center removing the 30 inches worth of distance down to 18 inches.

Top – Night fighting rules.

1st

Movement
- The ancient farseer casts Fortune on the front rank of Wraithguards. The second rank just walks behind them. The rest of the Na’ Nular’s forces moves and runs (total average of 9 inches) into the field, while the first deployed troops moves and fires their weapons to effect.

Fire Phase - Na’ Nular casts Mind War on the Shas’ El (Rolls 8 passes and the El rolls a 2 while Na’ Nular rolls a 4, difference of 2 since Ld 10 v Ld 9 killing the El due to 1 failed invul save on the go. Another roll 5 passes and another suit dies.) A volley of cannons fires (10 + a pistol that was saved) and consumes 3 out of 12 fire warriors (they pass a morale including the remaining suit).

No Assaults.

Unit Losses: None

Bottom

OMG factor runs wild.

Movement – He moves the rest of his army in and as close for firing range due to NF rules in effect. Although, he leaves his Stealthsuits in reserve for Outflank Maneuver, seeing that the wraiths have pushed into his side so quickly, he moves the last suit away from the cannons.

Fire Phase - Leaving his warriors stationary, they rapid fire the front rank guard doing 3 possible wounds that were saved (due to Fortune). The second rank of fire warriors fires a volley of single shots (they got range on a roll of 12), inflicting 4 wounds only to be ignored by the wraithguards. The lonely battlesuit ranges and fires his plasma rifle wounding once, but saved due to the re-rollable Conceal, while his missiles does 2 wounds but is saved due to the AV of the unit. The primary HQ suits ranges and plasma fire kills 1 guard out of 3 shots that would have wounded them. Broadsides fires their twin linked plasma rifles at the unit managing to wound twice, as the spiritseer sighs in relief as it misses the guards due to fortunate Conceal saves. A Devilfish flies pass the line heading towards some wooded area for cover. Two crisis battlesuit units emerge, although only 1 was able to range the wraithguards and opens their plasma fire at the ancient dead. Capable shots although 1 wound and were fortunately saved by the wraithguard. The second Broadsides couldn’t see the guards (he rolled a total of 3), while the Hammerhead turns its large railgun at the wraiths and fires a blast template thinking it could do the trick. Numbers starts running through our heads, until he rolled the deviation dice and it moved further to the front almost getting his warriors (fired at the second rank and it moved 4 inches pass the front rank hitting 3 guards and doing 2 wounds that were saved. Whew!)

No Assaults – Moves the lonely Crisis Bodyguard away from the threats only to see on his sensor suite that more threats has moved ever so closer.

Unit Losses: None.

Top – Normal

2nd
Movement
–Passing 3 tests casts Fortune on both wraithguard units and guides the unit he is in, as they move apart from each but the Conceal guards blocks the shots of the tank from the second unit. The rest of the guards along with a second farseer (rolls a 7 and a 9 for his tests) cast Fortune and Guide on 1 of the wraithlords and they soon started moving and running (total avg of 8 inches) to assist the first wave. The towering wraithlords moves as close as possible within the range of the spiritseers although the warlock council runs along with them. The fire prism gracefully moves and tries to reticule the Tau tank ahead behind some withered trees.

Fire Phase – An elegant beam shines through the deadwoods and attempts to strike at the unsuspecting tank (yeah, right damn cover save, ha-ha), hitting a trunk within the trees and it lights up on fire turning it to ash, as the Hammerhead lives for a few more moments. A volley of wraithcannons can be heard hum, as they unleash their deadly volley at the nearby Broadsides unit – hitting with 7 out of their 9 functioning cannons. Small warp portals open nearby each suit 2 falls as easy prey against them. Flickers of sparks from the shield generator of the Shav’re, until it was overwhelmed by a sizable rift (invul saved 2 of the 3 wound but the roll of 6 killed him anyway) behind him and one can only hear the scream of fear as the portal closes. Seeing 1 of the units fall prey to those cannons Na’ Nular sees fear from the Fire Warriors and orders the wraithlords to open fire at them. First wraithlord (guided) fires at the second fire team with the Scatter Laser hitting 3 of 4 warriors which 2 of them were able to duck away from their deaths, while hot plasma from the Starcannon kills 2 immediately. The second wraithlord open fires at the same unit its Scatter Laser hits felling 1 of the fire warriors, while the Starcannon kills 1. Opportunity knocks and the spiritseer of the first wave’s 2nd wraithguard unit unleashes gout of flames engulfing the fire warriors in a blazing bonfire. Their cannons leveled and they decimate the ranks of the Tau troops, yet out of 9 warriors 3 remained poised and looking for a nasty fight (they passed their morale not including the disappointing to hits and wounds of my rolls).

Assault Phase – After a not so spectacular volley of shots, they charged the remaining troops and killed them; consolidating inside the building not within sight of the other fire warrior team.

Unit Losses: None.

Bottom

Movement
- The call for reserves occurs and the Stealthsuits could be able to alleviate a semblance of relief in the faltering lines. Turns of event starts to unravel the Tau line, as the Shas’O and his unit moves towards the building to assist the ailing fire team of the imminent danger their in. The Broadside unit anchors and readies their railguns. 2 Crisis suit units flank the immortal wraithguards along with Na’ Nular. Erstwhile, the Hammerhead moves to a safer position trying to hide itself from the elusive prism and possibly return fire at it, while the lonely Shav’re moves closer to the unit in the building.

Fire Phase – Tau Pathfinders disembarks from the devilfish into the trees and on cue for Na’ Nular can hear from the thoughts of the Tau Crisis units “FIRE FOR EFFECT!” and to target their unit. Nine battlesuits rapid fires (3 twin-linked) white hot plasma accompanied with 12 missiles and 3 railgun (twin-linked) shots. Which 8 plasma fire, 9 missiles, and 3 railgun shots landed at the wraithguards; 3 plasma shots, 2 railgun shells and 5 missiles could possibly wound the armored wraithbone constructs. The missiles shatters as they hit, they did help in weakening the wraithbone shells for plasma and both railgun kills. The spiritseer can only pick up their spirit stones, if they happen to survive and return back. The Hammerhead attempts another template at the open unit of wraithguards. This time there was barely a deviation hitting 4 wraithguards, which 3 were wounded and subsequently saved by their thick construct shells. The fire team also open fires at the unit in the open attempting avenge the deaths of their fallen (5 wounds and 4 were saved) crippling a wraithguard. The stealthsuits open fires at the wraithguards inside the building, fortunately managing to cripple none of them (18 shots 8 lands and 5 wounds saving all due to Fortune). The lone battlesuit and the Shas’O unit unleashes on the wraithguards with their entire arsenal finding out that it was harder to put these constructs down (fortuned 3+ armor save and a 4+ cover save.)

Assault Phase – Seeing the sheer amount of firepower that they dealt to one unit, dealing a morale blow to their commander’s heart that he tells them to jump away and reform as near as possible to his side.

Unit Losses: 1 full unit of Broadsides, 1 full unit of Fire Warriors.

Top - Normal

3rd

Movement - Fortune were cast twice more by Farseer Na’ Nular and her second-in-command cast it to her unit and guide to a wraithlord. Seeing the Tau Pathfinders imbed themselves in the woods one of the wraithguard unit from the second wave moves towards them, while the other trundles forward, as fast that it(running during shooting phase) could move. Na’ Nular moves her wraithguards inside the building just within sight of the 3 Broadsides. The 2 wraithlords moves alongside the spirit council looking and ranging the hiding battlesuits. Following right behind these towering figures is their fire prism blocking the sights of the Broadsides to both of them. The fresh wraithguard unit within the building moves up the second level and they start leveling their cannons.

Fire Phase – First, the spiritseer motions and with a wave gout of flame engulfs the fire warriors with no where to hide from the purifying flames 6 were consumed by it. Even the ruins inside a building, one can find places to hide behind when fear is upon you. The wraithguards places small rifts of the warp catapulting 4 into the heart of chaos (8 hits, 4+ cover saves still affects you inside). The remnants of the fire team breaks and runs pass the wraithguards. The fire prism tightens its beam in the midst of the battlesuits only deviating 2 inches still catching 4 suits and killing 3 of them instantly (no such thing as partial and S9 AP2 is awesome in killing anything; points well earned). The last of the first HQ was caught in the intense laser and survives (unbelievable this guy should get promoted if he survives the fight), while reducing the numbers of the battlesuits severely to a more manageable amount. A spiritseer and 5 wraithguards beside the ancient farseer, Na’ Nular calls forth an Eldritch Storm near the Hammerhead and still catching the lone bodyguard and managing to wound him (ha-ha.) As the storm passes the Tau vehicle has exposed its rear armor to the rest of the farseer’s second wave. A (guided) wraithlord open fires at the rear of the Hammerhead with both starcannon and scatter laser, managing to land all shots into the rear of the vehicle (3 penetrating hits and 1 glancing hit). In a flash, the Hammerhead explodes spectacularly bathing the bodyguard in its catastrophic fire doing nothing. The second wraithlord targets the wounded crisis suit and perforating him with 2 laser and 2 plasma shots. The shield generator glimmers from the first starcannon shot and fails at the last, alas he falters in the end. The second wave wraithguards rushes towards their eventual goals.

Assault Phase – None.

Losses: None.

Bottom

Seeing his second fire team leave the battlefield, the Tau commander hails the Eldar forces for a talk (Surrendered due to surmounting amount of losses and the eventuality of having 20 more wraithguards coming while 15 are still running around killing units and are well within corralling range.)

Losses: 1 Hammerhead, 2 units Fire Teams, 1 unit of Broadsides, 1 HQ and Bodyguards

Eldar wins.

Well haunt, that's what I call a stomping, congrats for the Win - Fpr of course, Eldar must (should) always prevail... ;) But honestly, I think that T'au is one of the armies that have the hardest time against Ghost Armies, they just don't pack enough low AP guns to take Fortuned Wraithguard efficiently and MUST win on Objective if they want to win at all.

Also, that's a lot of writing for sure, the introduction and 'special effects' included in the batrep are interesting as well, although I would have liked you had pictures for that one: 40 Wraithguard advancing together is something I want to see before I pass away from old age. Pray try to take some for your next batrep! :)

Hey awesome write-up and congratulations... I would of loved to see soem pics to go with it; but maybe next time.

As Starky said, your opponent was not well equiped to deal with the Ghost Wariors, and I think he messed up the priority as well. But so be it... you played it well to keep beating on him and prevail (and then some)... Great to see another Eldar victory.
