Tactics: At it's most basic, this list will have Illic and the Reapers hanging back and providing fire support as the rest of the army advances, while in my warlock's conceal bubble. In truth, due to the reapers ability to hit on a 3 up no matter what, almost the entire army could be mobile.

Illic will focus on popping important characters or heavy weapons. Reapers will eliminate hard threats to my wraith and avatar as they advance. Of my advancing force, the wraith provide a screen for the avatar, as well as combat support to ensure he does not get bogged down by hordes. 5 wraithblades with a spiritseer (with enhance), I have found, can be quite monstrous in close combat and the avatar himself is absolutely devastating to multi-wound models. The Guardian's could also shield the avatar, but their main roles will be fire support and sitting on objectives. Finally the scorpions are my unit for harassing vulnerable enemies or possibly assisting in the defense of my rear units.

With these three detachments I get 8 command points, leaving me lots of reroll options. I think my first priority with rerolls would be to insure long charges for wraith and avatar, and second to insure that Illic hits his mark, when needed. 2 of my detachments are Ynnari because, for the most part, my units will be clumped and able to take great advantage of strength from death. Only my Avatar's detachment is Asuryani because the Avatar has to be, and the reapers are the least likely to get any benefit from strength from death if they hang back.

Worth splitting the scorpions into 2 squads of 5?

Probably, for the extra exarch. Good call.

G'day Tweedz!
Nice looking list. It's good to see the Avatar being used more in 8th ed.

After some playtesting of my own, and a lot of reading on other people's experience with our units, I have decided on a few changes. First, while Illic has been good at popping the heads off minor characters and important weapons, the regular rangers have not, so I removed the rangers. Next were wraithlords, which were unfortunately poor at both damage output an damage soak. I would still use them in lists tailored to ghosts, but in mixed company there are better choices. All in all I decided to go with this:

Battalion Detachment (Ynnari)

  Illic Nightspear (1)
    1 Illic Nightspear: Shuriken pistol,Power sword,Voidbringer

  Warlock (1)
    1 Warlock: Witchblade,Shuriken pistol

  Guardian Defenders (11)
1 Heavy Weapons Platform: Shuriken cannon
    10 Guardian: Shuriken catapult,Sunburst grenades

  Guardian Defenders (11)
1 Heavy Weapons Platform: Shuriken cannon
    10 Guardian: Shuriken catapult,Sunburst grenades

  Guardian Defenders (11)
    1 Heavy Weapons Platform: Brightlance
    10 Guardian: Shuriken catapult,Sunburst grenades

Vanguard Detachment (Ynnari)

Warlock (1)
    1 Warlock: Witchblade,Shuriken pistol

  Striking Scorpions (6)
1 Striking Scorpions Exarch: Shuriken pistol,Scorpion chainsword
5 Striking Scorpion: Shuriken pistol,Scorpion chainsword

   Wraithblades (5)
    5 Wraithblades: Ghostswords

   Wraithblades (5)
    5 Wraithblades: Ghostswords

Spearhead Detachment (Asuryani)

  Avatar of Khaine (1)
1 Avatar of Khaine: The Wailing Doom

  Dark Reapers (3)
1 Dark Reaper Exarch: Reaper launcher
    2 Dark Reaper: Reaper launcher

  Dark Reapers (3)
1 Dark Reaper Exarch: Reaper launcher
    2 Dark Reaper: Reaper launcher

 Dark Reapers (3)
1 Dark Reaper Exarch: Reaper launcher
    2 Dark Reaper: Reaper launcher

total: 1499 pts

In this incarnation, wraithblades now help to serve as a screen, support for my Avatar. In addition, now that it is clear that Ynnari can be taken with Asuryani as long as the detachments are separate, I have made only the Avatar's detachment Asuryani as the others are more likely to benefit from power from death.

I could reconfigure the points a bit and find room to make those wraithblades, wraithguard with scythes (which are just absolutely brutal). What do you guys think?

Wow!
When you take out transports/vehicles, you get a truck load of models on the table.

This is a more powerful list than your first, I think.
Some D-scythes would be lovely but if that's too many points to find, some less expensive changes could be:
Upgrade a warlock to Spirit Seer
Biting blade for the Scorp Exarch

Also when you're ready, please either edit the OP to show your final list, or start a new thread with your final list
