Title: Autumn Painting Challenge [Month 2/3]
Post by: Kitsune Tsuki on October 1, 2007, 06:32:10 AM
Welcome to the October Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon, Serious Callers Only and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I will update this post with a list of people who wish to vow.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.  Vows are still accepted after the 10th, but they can not be changed afterward.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.  It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however.

3. I need to know unit sizes when you post your vows.

FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows, myself included.  Feel free to do vows based on any game system.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

being a newbie here I want to make a vow but I have a question: I started working on some Necron Warriors last week, but they are already assembled, and the majority of the armour is finished. So can I make a vow on this or is it considered cheating or something? :)

Thanks

Well last month was a failure of epic proportions, so I'll cut back a bit this time because of Uni.  This month I vow to paint:

1 Jumpgate
4 bases of Thunderbolts (3 ships per base)
8 bases of Starfuries (3 ships per base)
8 Breaching Pods
2 Vorchans

All from Babylon 5: A Call To Arms, for demo games this month.  No 40k stuff yet.

Gerrie,

yes you can vow them.

as far as me. I failed alst month and I honestly do not feel like finishing my LoTR models. Plus I have another 1 week out of town training to do this month so i will keep it small and only vow to paint up my Macharius.

Well I failed misrably to paint my Roughriders last month, but at least they're all assembled now lol, so I'll vow them again this month and a new toy to boot.

10 Praetorian Roughriders
1 Malcador

On second thought, I'm only doing one Russ (Sheepz fury or Peanuts might, I havnt decided). Since this is the first time I've scratch built off a chimera, I dont know how long it will take.

BTW, if anyone has spare leman russ sponsons, drop me a PM. I'd be most intrested in taking them off your hands  ;)

First of two squadrons of Roughriders for my GT army - the thing is I'm not that happy with them, I've doing a revised version for the Phoenix Club anyway, and I know I can create better models then these - which combined with the rush I'm in has reflected a bit in a half-hearted paintjob, it probably does'nt show given the pictures are a bit dark and its from a distance but up close they're not as well done as I'd like.

Well I got the Terminators done...look quite nice if I say so myself  ;D

Sorry for the pictures being so dark.  I turned up the ISO on my camera and tried to up the exposure in Photoshop, but I really just don't have enough light at the moment.  I'll see if I can try re-taking them later.

I know, I know.  BOOoo!  I'm using metal paints.  So what, even though NMM is very pleasing, I think metal paints has their own attractive attributes as well.  I just love the metal long on the model, hence one of the reasons why Iron Warriors for chaos were pretty damn popular choice of Army.

That's a pretty sweet looking techpriest there.  I can't say I'm particularly fond of NMM, especially on a tabletop.  It just doesn't look right.  Good for display, but when you actually start looking at it from different angles, it doesn't always look right.  Particularly the NMM.

my 1 ogryn was finished and based a couple of days ago and commissar is about 60% done... just got to get the mood and motivation right to finish him up which is severly lacking this month dunno why.

pics soon i hope.... :-[

nice techie there DJ i like the green its more orriginal than the red every one uses, i dont think this model would suit nmm so im glad youre using metallics, i prefer metallics in 40k anyway as i dont think nmm suits 40k particularly unless like you say its a display piece, but on the field it doesnt look right coz its dependant on a single viewing angle

Final pictures... found my camera :)

compared to you guys they are pretty basic but to be honest, they are my first real attempt at highlighting and though not great are prob amongst the best I have done so dont be too critical!

they look fine, good attempt for your first highlighting.

il give a little bit of advice but i wont be critical..

the paint needs to be a little thinner to make a smooth transition for blending, get the consistency right the rest seems to follow.

also think where the parts will be hit by the light most and where therefor the higlights and shadows would be  as at the moment your highlights make your models pop they dont look realistic

hope that helps without been too critical because for a first try at highlights like i said earlier its a very good attempt.

vow update: commissar finished today, dont know if i will add on to my vow i dont seem to be too bothered this month but we shall see.

my vow is complete

I was beginning to think that I would get not a thing done on my vow... lots going on between school and home.

But, I managed to find time to make some progress on my vow.  I've painted the flesh on three sisters and a priest (the other two are in masks).  I've also just finished the red robes on the sisters and the red trim on the priest.  The next steps are to repaint the sister armor black (over black basecoat), and to paint the priest robes brown.  I also painted my immolator black, and did two drybrushes (dark gray followed by light gray).  I may not finish before the end of the challenge, but at least I will have made progress.  Pics later.

personally i think they look fine but i know tha ive had models which other people think are ok which i hate.. its tough being a perfectionist lol

the horses are good, the colour scheme is good, what is it you dont like about them .. i would personally change the lances as they look too flimsy and out of date-ish

Vow update.

I'm still patiently waiting for my pre-ordered Baneblade to show up. This is the last time I pre-order anything hoping to get it around the release date.

As soon as I get it, I promise to do sprue shots, WIP shots, etc, may even turn it into an article if I'm feeling ambitious.

Nice work so far folks.

It's that old theme thing again ;)

British Lancers of the late 19th Century (Zulu War period) wore blue uniform similar to the artillery only with white trim this time (and a white breast though i've avoided this), only the Dragoons wore the standard scarlet.

It's kinda like Americans wanting to make their guard either based on Colonial Troops, Civil War Troops, or World War II Troops.

Wait, we do?  Could I get a copy of that memo?

Anyways, progress update.  About 82.36715 percent done my raptor.  I need to touch up a little bit more, then base him.  Frankly, I don't really like the raptor models all that much, but their rules are too good to pass up on.  Not sure if I should enter him or my nephilim in a contest this weekend (Which I know I'll lose either way).  Blood claws haven't been touched.  I think a few have base coats on them, but that is it.

god freaken damnit!!!  I take back what nice things I said about GW Primer.  The can that was only used like twice and bought 3 weeks ago...  I didn't do anything wrong (i don't abuse them, just take a look at all my models) and yet the neck of the tip of the spray decided snap and got primer all over my body, my clothes, the grass, the cement....  I showered twice and can't get this off my skin!

Ouch man! That sux... Erm, not to pile on, but unless you got your hands on an old can, the GW chaos black is not primer any more. They changed it to just black spraypaint. Some cant tell the difference but it's definetly there...

As for my vow, I finally got some plasticard and added the neccesary armur improvements and got the turret 70% done. I also managed to find an old banner pole that has provided over two dozen rivets and keeps on going (a maddening experience if there ever was one).

I am unable to complete my vow seeing as I just had a holiday and got exams this week. Even so I still would like to show you guys the progress that I made so far. I painted 2 out of 5 models, the downside is that they are really time consuming to paint them this way.

I won't step down to a lower quality level, but instead will go up to a higher level later on to finish this army. Even so I will finish this squad in my next months vow when I do have the time.

Pictures of my officer and my plasmagunner.

Basically I'm halfway through assembly, with the turret finished and the deck assembly done, and one side. I'm taking my time filing the mold lines off the track.

Forward to next month's vow, which will be a continuation of the Baneblade project.

That's another completed vow under my belt.  I'm getting good at this and I'm finally getting some of those unpainted minis done!

Well that's another failure for me.  Thanks to the postal strikes the Vorchan blisters only arrived yesterday, and there's STILL no sign of my breaching pods.  I ordered both sets of minis over a month ago. :(

At least I managed to get the rest done.

Well I completed the Scorpions that I vowed for this month, but didn't even get started on the Serpent unfortunately  :(. So that makes 2 uncompleted vows that I've made, but at least I got something done this month. I'll post the pics of the Scorpions as soon as I have them.
