ALL VOWS MUST BE IN BY September 10th

Welcome to the Autmn Painting Challenge. We have been running these all year now under Loydb, Khemri Demon and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I'll list vows made, name and praise those that make it and name and shame those that don't.

This one will run for September, October and November. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

Vows for September:

SeriousCallersOnly: 10 man DE warrior squad, their raider and the lord
Scribble: 6 Scorpions, repaint wraithlord, wardancer lord (rangers)
Kistune Tsuki: 1 Hordes Seraph, 1 hunter
Fold: Ogryn + Comissar
Myung: Phantom Titan, 6 jetbikes, 4 shining spears, 2 squads warp spiders, magnetising on bikes
Khemri Daemon: Dark Elf Noble (maybe Cold One knights)
Valar: 7 Thunderers, (6 Wardancers)
VectoredThrust: 10 man tac squad
CheesyRobMan: 4 Reapers
Atropine: 4 Fire Dragons + Exarch, 2 heavy weapon platforms + crew, 8 guardians (maybe swooping hawk exarch, maugan-ra, 1-2 farseers, warlock
Chaplain Harlean: 8 hobbits, legolas, grishnak, haldir (cave troll)
Big Boss: Wood Elf Highborn, 10 SM scouts, trenchline
Cinder: Finish 4 banshees, fire prism, wave serpent, paint 8 man tac squad nd 2 wraithlords
Yentz: Epic Butcher, Sorscha
1-i: 8 Genestealers
Tlaxcatl: 5+1 old rangers, 5 new rangers, 2 warlocks, 2 farseers

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

4. Vows in parenthesis/brackets are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 11th.

Thanks to Loydb for getting this up and running (come back any time), and Khemri Demon for continuation. Lets see those vows.

I'll kick off....

SeriousCallersOnly: 10 man DE warrior squad (with their raider if I can get one)

Thanks for picking it up SeriousCallers, sorry to lay it on you, I might pick it up again next month if you don't. I'm just a little busy with studying and exams and things.

I shall vow a Dark Elf Noble, and maybe a unit of Cold One Knights to accompany him, if I have enough cash left to get them.

Vows updated.

Some quick replies there folks, clearly still a lot of interest in these threads. Should be enough frequency in replies to prevent it sinking, but could we get this stickied please?

Myung, do you do anything but paint? that's another huge vow.

Khemri - no problems. I don't have to worry about finding time to study.

Keep them coming guys.

My vow will be my first post here on 40KO!

1 x 10 Man Tac Squad (A chapter of my own design)

I would vow more... but I'm just getting back into the hobby and am trying to increase the quality level of my painting (beyond TTQ).

Cheers!

haha yes I do! I play cod2 a lot. Go out on the weekends!

But I do enjoy painting, after helping people all day long a little peace and quiet and a paint brush help me destress!. Actually Augusts wasn't so big. Esp if you factor in I was on vacation out fo town for 10 days then really sick for another week where all i did was lay in misery.

you think that vow is big? hehe be glad I didn't get my Tau Mega Force yet! come on sept 4th! It's waiting to round out the pile of stuff in my closet! Next month i will have 2,000 pts of Tau as my vow! 34 fws, 2 devilfish 2 hammerheads, 3 piranas, 4 battlesuits, 6 stealthsuits... haha well you get the idea.

btw I magnetized all my biikes lastnight. I must say it worked out really well! I even did the 6 bikes from last months vow. Just gotta touch up the bottom of the bikes a bit. Tonight I will come home with a bottle of acetone to strip the 10 year old half paint done on the spiders.

I vow 4 Dark Reapers (the 2nd-ed conehead ones). Fairly modest this time around, although I may expand the vow a little if I decide to start on some B5:ACTA ships too.

Vows updated.

Good turnout for the first day.

I've done a test mini for my squad - it's a bit rough but will be cleaned up with the squad. Palette is scab red through to blood red on the armour, black, boltgun. Red ink over and black ink in the crevices

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h294/SeriousCallersOnly/IMG_2136.jpg

Poor photography as usual. Can't seem to work with macro and artificial light

Why don't you use your flash?  I use an anglepoise lamp shone right on the mini sat on a white b/g, along with flash and macro mode on a really bad camera and manage to get reasonable photos out of it  ;)

I thought I had used the flash on that one. I think it came out dark due to short exp.

What length exposure setting do you use?

Automatic  ;D  My digital isn't good enough to have manual exposure control!  I've found all digis to be pretty good at automatic exposure anyway.

I will be running a blog thread for my challenge this month in the Konversions Forum, since I don't want to clog this thread up too much (especially since I won't be on to the painting stage for a while yet!  It can be found here for anyone who wants to follow my progress.

I've also started painting the Commissar who was converted a few days before the challenge started.:
