Title: Autumn Painting Challenge [month 2/3, 10/25 complete, 40% must try harder]
Post by: SeriousCallersOnly on September 30, 2006, 07:34:12 PM
ALL VOWS MUST BE IN BY October 10th

Welcome to the Autmn Painting Challenge. We have been running these all year now under Loydb, Khemri Demon and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I'll list vows made, name and praise those that make it and name and shame those that don't.

This one has run for September, now October and November. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

Vows for October:

SeriousCallersOnly: Haemonculus + 5 incubi ;D
Kitsune-Tsuki: Seraph, 7 dire avengers ;D
Myung: 12 fire warriors, 1 devilfish  ;D
Chaplain Harlean: Hellhound and heavy weapons team ;D
Scribble: Skull Pass Gobbos - 40 spearmen, 20 archers, troll, 10 spider riders, shaman, general  :(
Nicolai Gortz: 7 Termies + Chaplain :(
Khemri: Dwarf Thane and Basilisk :(
Valar: Finish 8 wardancers, 5 Ork nobz, WE Standard bearer :(
BigBoss: 7 wardancers w/command, WE BSB, Raven Guard dread :(
Lt Fury: 12 Kasrkin stormtroopers, 3 heavy weapons squads, 16 guardsmen :(
Yentz: 10 Trolls, 6 praetorians, Lord Tyrant Hexeris ;D
LoydB: Finish ranger squad (how many?) ;D
Archonbjorn: 1 dread, 1 inquisitor :(
Col. Gravis: 3 Ratling snipers, 10 praetorians, gatling gun :(
Marshall George Timson: 15 Zombies  ;D
Hellboy: 8man Word bearers squad + dreadnought ;D
TheDean: 5 Guardians, 2 support platforms, warlock :(
Merlyn921: 4 scorpions + exarch :(
naikee: wraithlord + 5 avengers :(
unscientific postscript: 3 swooping hawks + exarch :(
Evil_toast: 5 x Warp Spiders + Exarch, 3 x Wraithguard, 3 x Swooping Hawks + Exarch :(
Guardian of the rose: 16 guardians :(
Big Tuff Cream Puff: 4 destroyers ;D
Trooper Caffran: 15 Night Lords + dreadnought :(
Necrontyrtitan: Black Templar command squad :(

Vows Completed:

 ;D Chaplain Harlean ;D
 ;D Hellboy ;D
 ;D Kitzune-Tsuki ;D
 ;D Yentz ;D
;D Big Tuff Cream Puff: 4 destroyers ;D
 ;D Marshall George Timson ;D
 ;D SeriousCallersOnly ;D
 ;D Loydb ;D
 ;D Marshall George Timson ;D
 ;D Myung ;D

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

4. Vows in parenthesis/brackets are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 11th.

Thanks to Loydb for getting this up and running (come back any time), and Khemri Demon for continuation. Lets see those vows.

I'll kick off....

SeriousCallersOnly: another 10 man raider squad (no raider for them until I get a sweet deal on ebay), haemonculus, (maybe 5 incubi)

I vow to paint a 12 man Fire Warrior Squad and 1 Devilfish

I know that is rather small for me, but a few nights ago I was in m closet digging around for stuff to paint when I stopped and looked at the pile of boxes and blisters I have yet to build. SO I vowed I am not allowed to buy anymore 40k till all my stuff is built. So this is going to be mostly a building month for me. That almost takes as long! I spent 5 hours putting togther 12 Fire Warriors the other night

here is my pile o stuff to build...yes that's like $1,100 bucks worth of crap!

MYung, qhat do you do for a living that allows you to buy all those models?  I'm guessing drug dealer or a doctor.

If he were a doctor he wouldn't have time to paint and build as much as he does.  Drug dealer it is.

Whats that, 10 vows in? Brisk business again, nice to see so many returners from last month.

Big vow for scribble this month.

Nicolai, I did termies and the same chappie a couple of months back if you'd like a look.

I'll update the vow list when I get a minute.

16 guardsmen

That's it...and no new models until they're done. The Leman, Chaos Marines, and Chimera are on the table for November.

Pics coming soon...as soon as I find the time and a server to put them up on.

I don't have acces to a camera atm but I will do my best to arrange something to get my minis online.

I have this MKIV dreadnought lying around here. Just ordered it from forgeworld and basecoated it till now. I will start with that one. Next to that I have a inquisitor model lying around here. [The special character.] which I will also start painting if my dread is done.

I am currently painting a whole deamonhunters army, so any motivation is welcome hehe.

It will be at least the required 3 minimum for a squad...

So far I've done this little bunch. They were pretty quick to paint and my drybrush the cloaks cop-out will probably save my sanity later on this month when I'm brushing my way through the other 70+ models  ;D

Not any great shakes by any means but decent enough for the table I s'pose  ;)

I too am finding painting time pretty slim at the moment. No progress since undercoating and I've applied for a management job, so will probably get even busier soon. I'll try and put in some time this weekend.

Keep those WIP photos coming guys. If I can't enjoy painting my own stuff, at least I'll enjoy watching yours.

4 days to vow.

Heavy Weaps: autocannon team and bolter team with cloth color.

So:

16 x Guardians (waiting for Hvy Wpn Platform with box)

Have to see if I can pull of a Green and Red theme without looking like Santa's Space Helpers Craftworld.

Post by: Myung on October 8, 2006, 02:41:34 AM
It's easy. When trimming you hold the piece and you cut towards your thumb. Now this isn't hard, nor a hard cut but when you do it about 5,000 times while making sure your mold lines and iddy bits are clean well you eventaully wear down the skin there :p

34 Firewarriors, 5 battlesuits, 6 stealthsuits, 12 kroot, 20 something drones, 3 pirahanas, 2 devilfish and 2 hammerheads. well that is a lot of cleaning ;)

Vows updated.

We now have whopping 23 vows in, mostly eldar (*cough* new codex *cough*), which I believe is a record for this thread. 2 days left to vow.

I, however, am making so little progress that I have downgraded my vow to a haemonculus and 5 incubi. How long can it take to paint 5 guys decked head to toe in black armour? I'll do the raider squad if and when I finish my vowed minis.

Vows updated.

We now have whopping 23 vows in, mostly eldar (*cough* new codex *cough*), which I believe is a record for this thread. 2 days left to vow.

Not to mention sales on the models that are being redone.

Anyways, I've built my Avengers, and starting priming, but ran out of spray paint.  On the three that I finished priming, I got the body & helmets done.  Started the tabards as well.

Okay, I'm geting cold feet, and the time to get cold feet is when there is still time to change your vow. I vow to get 3 Swooping Hawks done, and the Exarch, but not the Falcon (the more I do of that Falcon, the more afraid I am of doing something wrong).

just figured out that I will not be using my old reapers sooooo I should edit my vow while I still can, I will instead of my old vow paint 5 eldar guardians, 2 support platforms (with crew if I have time), and a warlock.

3 Avengers done, 4 more to go.  I've decided to not put on the tabards after many battles with keeping them glued on.

Unfortunately, my spray paint died on me, so I need to go get more.  Hopefully tomorrow I can get some spray paint, and if the weather warms up a little, I may be able to be done by the end of the week.

Vows updated and locked.

So, 25 in this month, one completed so far (well done Chaplain Harlean).

I've finally managed to make a start on mine, done the helmets on the incubi and started on the haemonculous. I'll get more done today, as my kids are away. Might even get a game in (first game with the dark eldar, probably vs my bro's DH, first game at all in 3 months actually). Maybe post some wips later.

I've also got another Destroyer, Destroyer Lord and Lord on Foot in the Production line.

Great work so far Dudes and good luck!

WIPs as promised. Since taking the photo I cracked on last night and finished all on the incubi but the highlights on the armour and basing. The Haemonculous.....I'm not so happy with. Not pleased with the skin tone, not sure whether to make the chest bare (more skin, bah) or armoured, not happy with the robe colour. *sigh*

And a reminder to all that there is less than a week to complete vows. The challenge closes at midnight tuesday GMT. We had a large number of vows this month - lets see some completes.

Nice work serious - makes me all the more embarrassed I haven't done mine.

As it stands, its 4 black orcs, 25 gobbo spearmen, troll, gobbo general, bsb, and the shaman all done - unfortunately leaving 20 archers, 15 spearmen and 10 spider riders all unfinished (bar base coat, and inisital drybrush on spearmen).

Still stowed off with work, so next month maybe, but will have to go more modest as I did bite a little more off than I could chew this month.  :-[

Highlight armour on the incubi, odds and ends on the haemonculous, base and I'm done. Should finish by the weekend.

DONE!

Whew, just finished the bases of my Preatorians. This vow has deffinitly taken the longest out of all of the vows I have done, but I did take a big dive for it. The full Boomhowler unit was the hardest, each model has a large amount of detail put into it, and they are fairly large models to begin with.

Hexeris was pretty cool, and I also redid his base and gave him little souls coming out of the ground and circling around him, like Epic Asphyxious.

Next month... 4 More Preatorians, Old Witch of Khador+Scrapjack, and 5 Zealots.

ok so on Saturday with not a single stroke of paint on a mini I decided I better get started lol!

It took me about 4 hours to get my test mini done for the fire warriors I am going to do for my army. After taking that long I said fubar that and made some easier steps and managed to finish the other 11 before I left for work on Sunday. Just gotta put some static grass on the bases and they will be 100% done. I must say they look rather sexy. Now to finish the devilfish! Which I think I can finish before I go to work on Monday night!

nothing like waiting till the last moment and the guilt building up to pout a fire under yer bum to paint for 12 straight hours!

There's also going to a frowny face next to my name, as I've only completed one of the 4 Striking scorpions from my vow and not touched the Exarch. Making this vow at the start of a new term with 3 courses to lecture was always going to be tough.
However, those guys have been sat in boxes or on my shelf for over 12 years, so I'm glad that this vow has finally kick-started my painting. I'll post a pic of the one completed scorpions once I've finished the base later tonight.

Title: Re: Autumn Painting Challenge [month 2/3, 25 vows, LAST DAY]

Merlyn, I like that dark green scorpion scheme, it looks good with the red (xmas eldar!). You could kick it up a bit if you went back and did the gems on the swords, maybe in a blue to match the pants.

Thanks Loyd, much appreciated. I had considered making more of the gems on the chainswords, but had just wanted to actually finish the model within the month in the end. I've got another 3 to go, so I'll dabble with blue gems on them and see how they look. The idea that I've painted striking scorpions in the colours of christmas elves hadn't struck me before, but now you've mentioned it..
I liked the rangers, especially the bases - that's something I'm definitely going to look into with my next squad.

OK, the challenge is closed. Check the front page for your smily face or sad face. I make it 8 confirmed completes, which is frankly crap considering how many vows were made. Well done to those that made it.

Anyone else want to claim their smily and think I've missed them, last chance to post.

Any more finished photos, lets see them.

I'll be taking vows for November on a new thread, opening tomorrow (too tired tonight)

Novembers vow will more atune to my normal load as I spent most of October building. I did build like 2k Tau and 1,500 of necrons but I still have boxes and boxes to build, but frak that as I hate building!

ah these vows do help the guilt factor in making me paint so I do love em

Unfortunately, the IG squads took a back seat to a squad of Slugga Boyz, Shoota Boyz and a Warboss. So while not fulfilling my vows, I did get a lot of great painting done anyways.   :(
