Title: Slightly...unusual Army for starting Chaos.
Post by: Onanon on November 17, 2007, 07:04:18 PM
I had the idea this week after re-reading one of the Nihil Rifles stories. Null (big, obscene monstrosity of a Major) is described as an aborted attempt at a Space Marine or some sick experiment that was never put down. It got me thinking about what an Anomien-derived chapter would look like. Sure, they're got the martial skill and the psychotic violence, but not the 'soul' of a Loyalist Marine, being blank and uncaring.
Given that their home planet, Anomie, later goes all Chaotic and is purged, the Marines themselves naturally get a bit strange and flee into the Warp. Not Chaotic as such, more like Relictors combined with a faceless grey nanite tide of Marines.
Here's the speil:

An army where every Marine is an echo of another, to the point where it's impossible to tell what is real and what is simply white noise. Very open to suggestions, themes, colours. Can be devastating if they manage to coordinated themselves.
Names like: AjA61**7048#
*#963
A|.
63
*#101#*
,.p4g 74pp.@

Quite possibly, the suit AI has been corrupted by eons old electronic junk, passing from star to star and black hole to black hole, never created or destroyed, just changing form. Some whisper of codes, of mechanical torment, the dying screaming of a million million machine minds, the screaming void noise turning them insane and washing away any personality. The repeated number '6' holds some special significance. Others say it is just that, meaningless junk. Obscure things learned in Warp-speak, some echo of modern-day machine and mainline.
Practice excision, if something become corrupt, you cut it off. Due to psychogenic effects and the Warp, you get a working phantom limb. Their minds are destroyed by this very process.

Some grand figure in charge, the only sane one, 'e'. Speaks in long, baroque sentences, using words beginning with E (Like V). Some sort of anti-Librarian? A Chaos list, using infiltrating Possessed, 1k Sons for the basic troopers (formed around nuclei of ego, the 'Sorcerer' equivalent) and Noise Marines for the sou-shredding heavy music of the insane spheres? Almost all infantry, just this wave of MEQs.

Heavily damaged armour, more often than not the person is dead inside it, animated only by a dead soul and the machinations of hate.

Can't erase the memory of corruption, can't erase a scratch on an overdub, it simply becomes part of the music. Names for the Chapter? Something like 'Outsiders' or 'Outriders'.

Will post pics tomorrow of the basic trooper.

Traitor, but not as so much of the word. Traitor like i believe Night Lords are traitors. I think they are not "allied" with a Chaos god but they just sow destruction on the Imperium. Going the new chaos route, okay, but then why post it here? I would use the SM codex and use traits like Uphold the honour of the Emperor, or any infiltration trait (I see your guys just appearing amougst the enemy, shifting like a untuned television)

And again, your army sounds like it would just find stuff to kill and kill it, like heartless murderers in the night striking fear and mayham in the general populations of His holy Imperium. Emperor protects...

Very spot on. As Marines and Anomiens, they were made for terror and infiltration. They went entirely sane, fled to the Warp where they pick up souls adrift on the maelstrom tide and bind them to the army. They drift in from Emperor-knows where to some vital point, kill everything like a surgeon excising a tumour and then drift away. See but Don't be Seen, Suffer Not the Work of Heretics or the Furious Charge One (No Mercy, No Respite). Drawbacks: We Stand Alone (obvious) or Aspire to Glory (have an old Dread in the process of being converted, would like some Termies) or Flesh over Steel(not going to have many vehicles anyway)

e still speaks of an 'emperor', though in unclear terms, they aren't allied with Chaos, but they aren't really allied with anyone else either... The Chaos 'dex would allow me better troop choices I suppose...

I like. I very like. Very static/screaming, soul shearing white noise army.

Camera is currently missing, so pics of that first Marine may have to wait until I find it.

Working up a bit of fluff for the Army, have decided on Chaos, simply because I can use a greater variety of units.

Hollows:(Noise Marines)
They attack with sound, their enemies driven insane by irradiating promises of consumerist satisfaction, tearing each other apart over the dead whispering ghosts of power showers and vacuum cleaners, or turned to bleeding slush by massive, rapid tumour growth.
Failing that, these Hollows bare themselves in waves of screaming feedback, overloading nervous systems and stripping away the atoms of the soul with the joyous music of hate and void.

Move so fast that they blur but are still corporeal, more so than Pawns.

Pawns:
(Thousand Sons)
The Pawns have been corroded entirely by the Warp, and form centres of resistance around nuclei of ego, similar *cough* identical*cough* to Thousand Sons. They are almost not there, and this incorporeality helps them weather enemy fire, allowing them to get in close and utilise their mind flaying firepower.

Deadlife(Spawn) are Outsiders who have become so insane and corrupt that they have totally broken the morphogenic field, and are amorphous coagulations of half-limbs and reverb.

Possessed, Termies and Dreads will be mightily impressive once I get round to them.
I'll use the ordinary Marines, converted up to fit with the Army fluff. Still missing my camera. Could this be moved to the Chaos MArines board?

how do u make an army???????? ???
Not... not quite sure what you mean.
Have you tried asking in the  Beginners and Newbies (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?board=41.0) forum? They could help you out.

Actually found the camera after nearly a week, and here's two Marines. The greenstuffed parts will be painted a swirling blue warpfire, the regular armour will be painted (grey? black? marbled black and white?). Can't really decide on a colour scheme yet.

If you look at the last pic, only the Marine's torso and right leg has damage. His left leg and upper body were forcibly excised by a Carnifex, previously he had been heavily corrupted. He's returned to his original Loyalist form, perhaps what ever fragment left of him still wants to go back to his old life.

Got a nice big Dread conversion in the works, it was previously a wreck terrain piece, but was salvaged with a bit of knife work. Big extended spine, decayed rocket launcher/CCW and mutated CCW. It's a temporary tomb for all the dead souls, and thus it's a bit unstable, especially since someone just ripped the front of the sarcophagus off.

I've been hearing wonderful things about Sorcerers lately. I found an old Tyrant Guard boneshield lying around, it'll make a lovely Disc for my Sorcerer. Been working on the fluff, and hope to have the Codex by Monday or Tuesday.

As for names:
Anomyn
Alumni
MMm... Better ones needed.

If anyone knows PiL, it's very much inspired by Metal Box (yes even Radio 4).
Swan Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I1baMz16gs&feature=related)
That's the musical aesthetic I want to get across.

No... replies, response or feedback after nearly two weeks?  :(

Looking at various models for 'E', Ezekiel on a Disc coverted from an old Tyrant Guard boneshield (3rd ed), with greenstuffing to make him look a bit like a Shadowseer.

Work on the army is slow, due to exams.

I was thinking of how they'd deploy, and came up with the idea of having this huge corrupted Battlebarge come out screaming from warp-space, speed through Imperial defences and as it came in for a crash landing with the planet's surface, you'd have these big phantom legs sprout from holes in the side, and bring the barge to a running stop. The ramps all drop, disgorging thosands of screaming Rhinos, Defilers and daemons. The the Barge stands up, and starts firing lance and broadside weapons in support of the foot troops. That'd be in large scale Chaos invasions.

They capture any ghost ships floating through the warp and bind them to this Corpse Titan, the remnants of any soul now enslaved to E's manical will. Holds particular hate for Harlequins, who resist him and manipulate things against him. Ultimately seeks acess to the Black Library, to seek info that would allow him to massive increase the psychic output of mankind, thus enlarging the Eye of Terror and throwing the universe into disorder. This makes him opposed to the Necrons. Is seeking to destroy the Nihil Rifles, as they are the last seed of Anomie, and all are carriers for the Pariah Gene, meaning enough psychic blanks and thus enough Pariahs to drive back the Eye.
So the Nihil Rifles are hunted by both sides.

The Imperium has devoted like or no time to hunting these Traitors down, compared to others who actively seek the downfall of the Imperium, as they rarely make full scale attacks and instead devote themselves to terror and shadowplay. Been having a lot of fun writing E's big speeches, might actually get writing a few stories about the Legion.

'Hunting... ha ha ha ha.... HARLEQUINS!'

The Dread is still WIP, and a mess of colour due to being used in 2 separate armies, then painted as a terrain piece, then salvaged because it's a free 140 points for a new army. It's a bad picture, but the wrecked missile launcher is covered in screaming, flaming faces. I'm thinking of adding a few tentacles to it, so I can run it as a 2 CCW Dread. And yes, it is crying.

Any Suggestions on what to do with the face plate?

e has a familiar called XKCDyke.

Planning to make Rhino covered in feel-good slogans, as the very fabric around it screams.
A possessed Vindicator or Predator will follow, with the words 'SPECIALSPECIALSPECI ALSPECIALSPECIALSPE CIALSPECIALSPECIAL' stamped all over it.
Rhino disgorges a squad of CSMs, and sits there repeating horrible, distorted imperial propaganda.

e has become a villain, with a guilty conscience over betraying the Emperor and leaving the Canoness he had sworn to protect, Annalisa. He is every so slightly camp, in a terrifyingly unpredictable way. Almost vaudeville.

The army is a celebration of the new blander codex, my lesser daemons Guardsmen bound to the Corpse Titan.

Could someone tell me why we don't get Razorbacks?
Or assault cannons?

But amphetamine parrot, our Terminators are beslubbering win!

Razorbacks and Assault cannons are based on STC's found after the Heresy I believe.

Don't worry about what you don't have.  Remember that you can get a Land Raider cheaper (who needs Machine Spirit anyway) and all of your marines have a bolt pistol, a CCW, and a bolter.  Plus Plague Marines, Ksons, Berserkers, and Sonic Weapons.

Anyway, everything looks great and I think the fluff is phenomenal.  I look forward to seeing more pics!

Damn... Could they not just capture a few? What of Renegade chapters of the last few millenia, post-Heresy? Surely they'd make it away with an assault cannon or two...

Ubergrit, improved Leadership and more special weapons are a boon, plus a few vehicle pre-upgrades but why no Plasma cannons in Havok or CSM squads? :( Shouldn't complain, as you say. It's about what we have!

I was pointed in the direction of old, dead, (retconned?) Chaos gods, Zuvassin (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Zuvassin) came up nicely.
Quote
Wherever and whenever there are people who want things to go awry, Zuvassin will be there to offer his patronage - and to make their own plans go wrong in the process. He has been known to usurp cults which think they are worshipping another of the Chaos Gods, revelling in the confusion and misery of letting them down or massacring them. Zuvassin, living up to his title, can undo everything, even removing the taint of Chaos from an individual by removing their mutations.

Fits in luurverly with e, everything he does is a joke, an act, a gag, a routine, but ultimately the trick is on him. Everything's dead, and Zuvassin wants to beslubber everything up.

A Space Hulk built up from raided ships and tortured souls forms the home base of the Chapter, who i'm yet to properly name.

It's one in the morning, I've got another 2 hours to kill before I sneak off to watch a boxing match in a mate's house. Sleep is distant. This is going to be an all nighter. Perhaps the sunrise shall give me something to think about.

 Updates!

Half a marine, reaching out in supplication. It's a particularly bad photo, and I assure you it looks much better IRL. One thing I'm concerned about is the lack of shoulder pad on the arm. I couldn't get a decent solution to it, so I might just GS more flames where the arm is coming out of the screaming wall. The coffin lid looks a bit crap too. There was meant to be a tear on the marine's face, but the greenstuff wasn't up to such small detail. It'll be painted on.

Scritches. Psychotic, even for an Outsider. Has most of a Khornate sword within him(in his back), he feels his own 'movements'. Unclear whether his wounds are self inflicted.

ANgle#. Like an Iron Maiden turned inside out. Speaks in static screams and the marine himself is a CCW.

Upcoming are Babyhands and '...'
The first Hollow, Oldstyle, will be done tomorrow. Looks pretty sweet.
Really enjoying getting back into the flow of things.

xkcDYKE has been turned into a Slaaneshi sorceror, and is being converted up from a Sanctioned Psyker.

The Dreadnought itself is just a soul repository for all those killed, so they can be re-animated in fresh Power Armour, used as weapons or to possess vehicles. Originally it was gifted to e's right-hand man after a raid on the Ultramarines who attempted to start a Second Founding chapter on Anomie, but he tried to double cross e, who then forced a million million dead souls through him, washing away every atom of ego. His existence is bound to this insane wreck, and he shares the death pangs of every new kill.

His firefrenzies and blood rages are just an expression of that pain, but for every kill he makes, it's torn right back through him like jagged thread trying to suture a hole in the void.
There's no body or anything, just sheared spirit, dead mechanical flesh driven on by the machinations of hate. Written on the side with credit cards and letters on sprue is 'FRAMED E'. He's not a man to cross.

All the above marines are just CSM, not Pawns or Hollows.
I'm going to write background for every single model in the army.

Got a champion planned, holding up a Guardsman with a bleeding, severed arm in his powerfist, and the chainsaw off a Sentinel being revved so as to cut the screaming tool in half, then to wear the skin like a cloak. Groovy.

I began thinking more about how the Outsiders became corrupt.
After fighting Chaos for several campaings, they were mind-scrubbed one last time, and something broke. Unusually resistant to corruption, great things seemed in store for the Chapter. The only Loyalist survivors are Vladimir and Estragon, two Brother-Captains in the Grey Knights. Fought in the scouring of Anomie, have links with Inquisitor/Commander Mono and have pursued e actively. Later fight alongside e and the Nihil Rifles, when the tombworld Nihil awakens, and the C'tan 'Outsider', the source of the Pariah Gene, tries to steer the dead planet into the Eye of Terror.

Inquisitor Mono, the focus of the possesion, is executed by the Commissar who he had taken and brainwashed as an Acolyte, as a possible sucessor. The Commissar, turned Inquisitor and Commander, takes control of the Nihil Rifles, and finds a balance between Law (an insanity) and Chaos (an insanity).

BECOMING MORE LIKE A GOD.

This army is getting more awesomely awesome by the day.

Babyhands [Sane]- Meltagunner. Close relationship to Aspiring Champion, Oldstyle. Has the hands of thousands stapled to him, most of them underage.

The Commissar [Insane]- Took the hat and red sash of a slaughtered commissar, as the Chapter is so open to themes and suggestions, he became a Commissar and dillgently upholds the Imperial Creed, honours his battle gear and spurs his squad onto greater things, chanting litanies of Hate and Faith as he beats Guardsmen to death with the iron bar 'Commissar' (bad pic. Might replace it with one you can actually see)

Began thinking about Daemon Princes, thought Annalisa would make a terrific DP.
Fluff's pre-written, taken from Pil's First Issue
Quote
Public Image Limited - Annalisa
Lyrics:
Think I'm proud to be your enemy
Take your hands off of me
You're worse than the thing that possessed me
The way they were
The way they should have been
Annalisa

Annalisa was 15 years
Stole her soul
But I hear no tears
Ever been alone
And heard the voice
Not your own
I've seen those fears
Annalisa

Somehow you used ignorance for sense
Melodrama in your eyes
All concern rests with the dead
Annalisa

Annalisa had no escape
Starved to death in a waiting room
Cheap concern and rosary beads
Did not solve screaming needs
Annalisa

Annalisa

Crawl like rabid dog

Annalisa (repeat)
She was the girl who was meant to have been possesed by several demons, died in an exorcism ritual. They made it into the film 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' and some other one.

Our Annalisa is a Canoness, who e hates himself for betraying. His Chapter were once bound to her protection, now they hunt the New Beginnings of His Message to destruction.

Annalisa has ascended after e made some terrible pact with Zuvassin (who probably made pacts and promises elsewhere) and is so altered and corrupt she belives that she has become an Imperial Saint, and that these strange powers are Emperor-gifted. She must smite the unbelievers. Of course, parts of her are still concious of her terrible fate, and she might turn on e at any time. e worships her like a god, and would slit his own throat to bleed her handkerchief red if he knew it would please her.

Going to use the Saint Celestine model, mounted on a larger base.

Done a bit of idling over the holidays, started thinking about how the whole Nihil battle would turn out and the interplay of the characters. Came up with a few interesting ideas.

Vladimir and Estragon, the Grey Knight Brother-Captains, confront the C'tan The Outsider (the source of the Pariah Gene) and are driven insane by the Boy Snide's Outrageously Shiny Leather and PVC clad Soul Train-Void. One is consumed by the C'tan and the other is later rehabilitated, but retains latent psychosis. His fear overcomes his faith and he is discretely retired.
He is mind wiped and farms a backwards agri-world for several decades.

His false memories deteriorate, and he remembers the awful truths found in pure absence.
The Chaos god Nechoho, the Doubter, finds him. He is drawn into the cult and recruits fellow 'brights' from the population. A full-scale invasion follows, and Vladimir is re-ensconced in a suit of Tactical Dreadnaught Armour, his former memories restored.

The aching loss of his Battle-Brother Estragon weighs heavily on him, and he seeks to pierce the Sea of Dirac cast by the Outsider, so that they can once more stride into battle together. He'll need enough firepower to level a sector...

e arrives out of the Eye of Terror with the Corpse Titan and a sizeable Chaos fleet that he has coerced, cajoled or threatened. He seeks to end the Necron menace to his beloved Eye.

Is affected badly by the planet, and the few Necrons they do manage to kill (along with a few Domo clones) integrate with the psychic whole, giving e the mother of all migraines. He'll be debugging the Soul Jar (the Dread) for years to come.

Zuvassin feeds on the 'not as planned' and the Chaos forces serve as little more than a distraction, playing a small but significant role in the war. e is wounded, and the Chaos forces disintegrate and flee.

Now a series of CSM I've had ideas for:

The Reborn:
Has died and reincarnated so many times that he is a conglomerate of all his past selves and is losing his morphogenic field. Before long, he will be a mewling spawn. Does not fear death.

ANgle:
Died one day.
Was never the same again.

Niemand:
Barely there. The Heresy affected him deeply. Is part of a significant minority that want to return to the Imperium, that may include e.

Deadspace:
Survived an airlock blowout for several days until he was rescued. Has never spoken again. Devotes himself to the boltgun that has become part of him. the time spent spinning in space helped him perfect his aim. Hasn't missed a shot in several decades.

Ca-Ca-Ca-:
Speaks with a horrendous stutter. He's been trying to say something for 200 years, something rare and something horrible. it might be a warning, a prayer or a request for a sandwich that will never arrive. is partially blind from staring at the sun so much.

The Arbiter:

Considers himself a man of Reason and Order. Carries a powersword of Justice and and a scales with concealed bolt pistol. Everyone and everthing is found to be guilty. Sued an electric toaster over public urination. Wears an eyepatch: 'In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.' Possibly a latent pirate.

HardGay Marine:

Affects non-Codex leather garments and utilises a crotch-mounted auto-loading Boltgun with gyro-stabilisers. Each pelvic thrust re-cocks the weapon for another burning fusillade. A buffet of manliness. Was a children's TV presenter back on Anomie.

The Rube:
Comprised almost entirely of jelly-like ectoplasm. Palpitates the unwary mark with fingers of rotten protoplasm. Has enough orgones to disable a Leman Russ (counts as meltabomb). Was a famed writer back on Anomie.

Go-tse:

Suffers a massively prolapsed anus. Was forced to conceal a thermo-nuclear device insider himself. His intestines have the power of speech, and will soon control his body as one all-purpose eating, breathing, talking tube. Aggravates the Rube.

Homeboy:
Was a mindless Spawn, reversed on a whim by Zuvassin. Misses earthly delights. Believes he has some special purpose.

Cible:
Needs to die. Has painted himself luminous colours, added flashing lights and goes out of his way to make himself a target. Because of this, he is almost invulnerable.

I'm still not entirely sure how e is going to look...

Umm...so why is the dreadnought so umm mixed up?
Umm indeed! I should get a summary up, rather than having a mother of a TL:DR for yiz all.

Quote
The Dreadnought itself is just a soul repository for all those killed, so they can be re-animated in fresh Power Armour, used as weapons or to possess vehicles. Originally it was gifted to e's right-hand man after a raid on the Ultramarines who attempted to start a Second Founding chapter on Anomie, but he tried to double cross e, who then forced a million million dead souls through him, washing away every atom of ego. His existence is bound to this insane wreck, and he shares the death pangs of every new kill.
Having a few machine souls like Necrons would seriously mess up a psychic stew, likewise, so would clones of a Culexus-reject like Domo, a mute, free-associating existential assassin. The Dread itself is none too stable, so these would further mess it up.
Is that clearer?
I have a tendency to be 'awfully literary'(read: bullamphetamine parrot artist), to quote Talon Raven.

Been going through what I still have in the box I inherited:
2 Bikers, 2 assault marines still not chopped up, a few Khorne Berzerkers, 5 old school loyalist terminators, a squad of Long Fangs and 6 or so paint set marines.
I could probably get a lot more off other people who used to collect on the cheap too.

On the wish list is that box of CSM, and a box of Assault Marines, giving me enough for 8 Raptors. This should take me up to about 800-1000 points. But first I'm going to paint what I've already made.

Turning against the idea of calling the Legion the 'Outsiders'. It's easily misconstrued as 'they're like... really dark... and really really like, misunderstood, because no-one like, understands them?' rather than being outside any preconceived morality or sanity and instead making a brutal, random path towards a higher plane of existence, in a brutal and random universe.

But what to rename them as?

Chapter philosophy:
There's no plan, so how can anything go wrong?

I had this written up an age ago, but I'm only typing it now. How e turns against the Imperium and why the Legion/Chapter is so beslubbered-up:

e recognised as a beta-class-psyker and seen to be destined for the ranks of great Imperial heroes. He began designing a system that would allow an entire Chapter to be psychically linked into a massive gestalt concert, hugely increasing the output of the conductor and allow instant relay of difficult and highly complex concepts. Eventually, this system would be tested on Storm Troopers, then become standard Guard issue. No more friendly fire incidents ever, battle plans more akin to symphonies that plodding progressions of tank and troop.

He coerced tech-adepts to begin installing the chips on squad leader and to begin psychotherapy, any latent psykers receiving sudden promotions. Combat efficiency rose from 88% to 98.9%. With the Mental Man project, the Meshuggagh Scouring and the persecution and execution of Iponunekc the Changeable, became a cake walk. e argued passionately in favour of his still covert works. Against widespread Imperial opposition to psyker-based technology, he would need to push harder, to procure a final and decisive victory so that Mental Man could be revealed.

An Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor, Acci Meiden, had her doubt about e and his motives.
She began her investigation.

As e pushed on further, his Chapter of grey psychotic wraiths cutting away the at the Great Enemy, so too did the Inquisitor, incising, whittling down to the core.

Soon the entire Chapter were part of the Mental Man movement, more and more latent psykers coming on line. There were even those who had been forced into operancy through mind-reaming and geno-therapy, highly dubious and borderline heresy.
Though he had gained much in the eyes of his fellow Marines, his search for a final and consummate victory consumed him, so that Mental Man could be revealed to great fanfare and Imperial triumph. He alone would be the hero, no longer the grey smudge on a wall beside men of lower calibre than he. Just one more victory....

Pushing harder, the Project strained at its seams.
It was only after a Culexus Assassin was deployed alongside the Chapter in a surgical raid against Urug Shambas, a psychically corrupt Inquisitor, that Meiden understood the scale and scope of the Mental Man project.

With heavy heart, she related to the Inquisitorial High Council how a single psyker could control an entire Crusade. Just one single mote of corruption would mean a civil war, one Chaos blight staining the soul... another Heresy.

This was no symphony.
It was a funeral dirge, and they would all dance to e's tune.

The Chapter was forcibly mind drilled, all memory of Mental Man forcibly excised. When it came to the Librarian, he was a wreck. He reasoned. He argued. He begged. He pleaded. He bargained. He raged. He wept.
He cursed them.

His psychic scream could be felt as far away as Holy Terra.
The mind drill broke him.
Mental Man had gone insane.

TL:DR:
Librarian sets up system to control entire Chapter, for the purpose of good, is revealed
and mind-drilled. Goes insane, takes his psychically linked Chapter into the Warp, killing every Loyalist he finds on the way out.

It's alright, but I figure he needed some kind of reason for turning away from the Imperium, rather than being motiveless.

A tonne more stuff tomorrow.
I can't get the time to type it up.

Actually bought Annalisa over the weekend, but I've barely had the time to trim the sprue off the Saint Celestine model. Cut my finger doing it, so I anointed the model in blood, and had it take down a Chimera with 2 heavy bolters, a Guard squad with HB, a Command squad and a Dreadnaught. 3 plasma Guard vets eventually brought her down. Roughly 145 points taking down 390-odd points.

Ran the model with Gift of Chaos and wings. I'd imagine that Warptime is even more lethal.
Sniping powerfists is a useful trait to have. Onto fluff:

Scoop: Insanely bloated Havok who lost the use of his legs in the Shelliac Purging, replacing them with a landspeeders anti-gravity unit. Envious of other, more psychical receptive Marines gaining promotions, he drilled his squad until they reached 90% combat efficiency.

Following the heresy, he drugged his little lads, butchering them with electronics, augmetic tissue stuffed with fibre optics, proud Marine flesh made anew in graven machine image. In the confusion, he settled his score with Jecht, and corrupted the Devastator sergeant and his squad, making them utterly thrall to his ego.

Scoop now floats above it all, directing dead hands, dead eyes and dead brains through electronic junk. The blunt will grind you down.

Despises and desires e's powers. A tyrant.
Armed with rocket launcher, Jecht is the sergeant.

e is bitter, twisted and divided. He thought that he would be better under the traitor flag, and now he curses himself for leaving the Imperium. Wants to spread this internal Chaos all over the Segmentum.

Began work on the allied Nechoho themed forces:
The Agents of Aponia:

Vlamidir
and Estragon:
Two Grey Knight Brother-Captains fight on Nihil, both driven insane by the Cnut-Void. Vladimir is consumed by the C'tan and Estragon is later rehabilitated, but retains latent psychosis.

The Knights of Aponia:
-Vladimir (deceased) and Estragon.
- Terminators with powerweapons, chainfists and combiplasmas.

Skopskyite Sect:

Plague marine equivelent. As pale, as pure, as painless as driven snow.
Deny all pain, all sensation, believing it to be the root of all evil.
Spend 24 hours a day in total darkness, inside black tomb-wombs shielded by Null-fields.
Entirely blind, they rise only for battle.

Adepts of Aponia:

CSM

Unity of Dissent:
1k sons. Practice cognitive dissonance. They are there... and not there.
You are shooting at something and nothing simultaneously. Their ammunition creates simliar doubt and confusion in an enemy's molecules. This angst is often fatal.

Chapter philosophy:
They seek to end all pain, whether psychic, existential or physical.
They are going to mercy-kill an entire universe. (Aponia= freedom from pain)

The chapter is loosely based on an idea  (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=137742.msg1669994#msg1669994) I had several months ago of recreating Waiting for Godot entirely in 28mm scale and a general love of Beckett.

Estragon's dialogue is taken almost entirely from the works:
Nothing to be done.
Nothing troubles me. And yet I am troubled.
It's barely an issue now.
If he dies: I can't go on. I'll go on.

For the lulz: Is it love, in the rectum?

Hey just had to say the background you have for this army is amazing sounds really interesting !
and ill be keeping my eye on this thread ;)

my only question is your marines move like white noise so when you paint your models and convert them
are you going to paint/model anything on them to represent their untuned tv movement? (if im making any sense :P)
i think it would look really good if you had the odd few marines modelled like that, the only thing i could think of to represent
this would be swirls or somthing around them.. but im sure someone with your mind could think of something well... more :D

You are. I'm not actually that sure how I can make them look as distorted and tv static-y as they appear in my head. Vehicles will surely be easier.

Taking '...' as an example. He's been dead a long time, and this Warp Scream effect has washed away any identity he ever had. The warpfire is playing through his suit and phantom limb, animating him, driven on by dead souls and the machinations of hate.

The armour would be grey with a sort of radioactive yellow trim and detail. The joins would be black with a grey highlights. The warpfire would be an agitated blue, turquoise.

Quote
An army where every Marine is an echo of another, to the point where it's impossible to tell what is real and what is simply white noise. Very open to suggestions, themes, colours. Can be devastating if they manage to coordinated themselves.

Listen to PiL's
Death Disco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I1baMz16gs&feature=related) to get the sense of the entire army. Unhinged, full of echo, reverb and impossibly heavy base. Just that feeling of unfocused hate, confusion, sneering pain.
The whole army's inspired by Metal Box.

Oh, and thanks.

Began thinking on the timeline of the Nihil Rifles project and how the Outsiders and the Agents would fit in.

250 years ago:
Chapter founded.
Several major victories and Mental Man.
Links with SoB- New Beginnings of His Message. (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=139182.0)
Vladimir and Estragon recruited into Grey Knights.
Various Anomie Regiments founded.
Planetwide revolution on Ortega.

200 years ago:

Ortegan Inquisitor Acci Meiden exposes e.
Heresy.
e takes to the Warp, slaughtering every Loyalist he finds on the way out.
Begininngs of Corpse Titan and space hulk.
Annalisa is captured.
Various evil deeds.
Vladimir and Estragon fight against e.

50 years ago:

Mono recruited into Guard.
Mono taken on as Acolyte under T, an Inquisitor.
Mono explores Nihil with Di. (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=142149.0)
Rogue Inquisitor T attacks and is killed.
Greviously injured, Mono makes a pact with the planet.
Di is interned in Necron Tomb.
Inquistor Mono kills Arger, radical Inquisitor attached to NBoHM Order.
Finds Null, a remnant of the Outsiders.
Various Inquisitorial escapades. (Think Fear and Loathing in Ulthwe. 'We were somewhere around Armageddon when the drugs started to kick in...')

Anomien 88th do their evil business in Sabbat World Crusades.
Small insurrection on allied Forge World Leylandii-4:
                                          Clean.

The Commissar is a Man of Action. (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=143768.0)
Mono awakes Nihil.
C'tan Outsider (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=153517.0) steers Nihil towards Eye of Terror.
Large-scale battle between Necrons, the remnants of the Anomien 88th, the Ortegan Hateful 5th, the Outsiders and assorted Chaos legions, Grey Knights and Ulthwe.
The Commissar snaps out of mind-control and executes the possessed Mono.
Estragon and Vladimir turn insane from Outsider.
Numbers swollen by Anomie survivors, Non-borns and Anomie colonies on various subjugated planets.
The Death World is succesfully terraformed.

Present day:

The Nihil Rifles, lead by the Commissar, find a balance between chaos (an insanity) and order(an insanity).
Deployed in several theatres.
Conflict between old hardcore like Null and Egal with new recruits.
The Commissar secretly carries on the 'Work'.
Hunted by e, Eldar.
Vladimir returns as Knight of Aponia.

As you can see, it's pretty extensive.
It's been bubbling for the best part of a year, after I decided to take a break after several projects I had going. And then I started up a whole other universe of stuff, oh dear...

Onto the recruiting process for the pre-Heresy Outsiders.

The Progenitor Chapter for the then-Recluses was the Ultramarines.
However, the gene-seed became altered (or was altered) in transit or in situ.
Defects in the Melanochromic Organ and Ossmodula lead to frighteningly pale and freakishly stretched Marines. They appeared to be diseased, elongated white spiders.

Poor metabolic synchronisation lead to a gaunt aspect and psychotic tendencies in the first generation. These flaws were later ironed out but remained latent.
Another side-effect was an overlarge Omophagea, making to the Chapter unusually open to themes and suggestion. This was corrected with extensive psychotherapy, but later exploited by e.

From the start, the Recluses resisted Guilliman's codex teachings. They favoured terror, vengeful retribution and urban conflict.

The final part of initiation trials for Noviates was to make it across the city of Interzone (if you've read Naked Lunch you'll know what I'm talking about). Half the initiates were killed, corrupted entirely and became crime over lords or joined the Exhibition, killing for a prize. Major Null may be part of this contingent.

The Ultramarines washed their hands of the Recluses at this point, feeling the Chapter had already split from them.

Recluses motto:
Vereor est Animadverto, Formidonis est Animadverto.
Terror's the Reality.(Co-opted from 'Terror's the Certainty').

e's Force weapon is named Narthex, an entry to a church.
Vladimir's Daemon Weapon is No's Knife.

Actually thought I should post up a description of Interzone, taken from William S. Burrough's 'Naked Lunch':

'... Gaming tables where the games are played for incredible stakes. From time to time a player leaps up with a despairing cry, having lost his youth to an old man or become Latah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latah) to his opponent. But there are higher stakes than youth or Latah, games where only two players in the world know what the stakes are...

...The City is visited by epidemics of violence, and the untended dead are eaten by vultures in the streets. Albinos blink in the sun. Boys sit in trees, languidly masturbate. People eaten by unknown diseases watch the passerby with evil, knowing eyes.

In the City Market is the Meet Cafe. Followers of obsolete, unthinkable trades doodling in Etruscan, addicts of drugs not synthesized, pushers of souped-up harmine, junk reduced to pure habit offering precarious vegetable serenity, liquids to induce Latah, Tithonian longevity serums, black marketeers of World War III, excisors of telepathic sensitivity, osteopaths of the spirit, investigators of infractions denounced by bland paranoid chess players, servers of fragmentary warrants taken down in hebephrenic shorthand charging unspeakable mutilations of the spirit, bureaucrats of spectral departments, officials of unconstituted police states, a Lesbian dwarf who has perfected operation Bang-utot, the lung erection that strangles a sleeping enemy, sellers of orgone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgone) tanks and relaxing machines, brokers of exquisite dreams and memories tested on the sensitised cells of junk sickness and bartered for raw materials of the will, doctors skilled in the treatment of diseases dormant in the black dust of ruined cities, gathering virulence in the white blood of eyesless worms feeling slowly to the surface and the human host, maladies of the ocean floor and the stratosphere, maladies of the laboratory and atomic war... A place where the unknown past and the emergent future meet in a vibrating soundless hum... Larval entities waiting for a Live One...'

Thought the entire book could be cut up and folded into the Nihil Rifles project. It'd make for a lovely Dark Heresy game, Agents (Inquisition) taking on Liquifactionists (Chaos of some amorphous guise) in the City. 'excisors of telepathic sensitivity cries out Culexus surgery, , investigators of infractions denounced by bland paranoid chess players, servers of fragmentary warrants taken down in hebephrenic shorthand charging unspeakable mutilations of the spirit, bureaucrats of spectral departments, officials of unconstituted police states would make for an interesting Arbites unit and a Lesbian dwarf who has perfected operation Bang-utot, the lung erection that strangles a sleeping enemy would make for an entertaining assassin class *cough*.

Our City of Interzone is best described as a mixture of the above, Necromunda Hive and 60's New York as described in a Velvet Underground song. The Planet itself, Anomie, is a prime recruiting ground for the Inquisition. All varieties of assassins are drawn from Anomie, but particularly Culexus and Eversor. A Black Ship is in near constant orbit. Rogue traders, freaks, outsiders and the alienated congregate on the planet.

The people are rumoured to be Dark Eldar tainted, and the concentration of psychic blanks on the planet has garnered Inquisitorial interest. Ordos Xenos fear a Necrontyr corruption of Imperial Seed.

Whatever the cause, the people of Anomie are cruel and sadistic, black humoured and blank. They make excellent soldiers, their skill in guerilla fighting, terror and nuclear, biological and chemical warfare outweighing numerous atrocities on subjugated peoples. Almost.
They are distrusted by High Command, and quite rightly so.
Sick, but gifted in the bleak arts.

Anomie was subjected to Exterminatus after a planetwide Chaos insurrection, Libertarianism turned Anarchy turned Chaos Undivided.

There's a pile of stuff, but it's all over the place at the mo'.
Nearly a year working on the entire project now. So many great ideas waiting to be recycled, to be cut up and folded into the greater body of work...

As other people have posted, and I'm sure you're well aware of, this is some SICK (read: well-organized, well-planned, overwhelming) fluff!!!  The merest reading of it has sponsored avalanches of philosophy and thought!

I'm not going to lie, I'm not as into the models as much as I'm into the fluff, but you have to admit that an idea like that on paper can hardly be brought out via the limitations of modelling.

And of course, I have to point out, while the fluff is amazingly great, the army itself is hardly going to need it.  You couldn't have just settled for: "8x Chosen, 1x PF, 1x IoCG, Rhino" ?  What I mean is, there's going to be a list, right?  And there will be battles, right?  Even if you win those battles, your opponent might not care about the Birth and Growth of each individual model.

Don't take me too harshly.  You're amazing.

EDIT: PS: Go me, 400th Post!

I don't even know why I do these kind of things. I started with an idea for an absurdly bleak comic set at the end of the human race, then the rough idea of it was recycled for a Guard army, the0th Anomien Guard (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=138364.0) then it became a question of taking those doctines and expanding them into characters. Conscripts? I was going to need an Independent Commissar to lead them, he needed fluff.
Thus the bleak, brutal and corrosive Commissar was born.

I needed officers, I threw 2 names on a page, Lieutenant- Colonel Mono and Major Null. My brain then began making characters, plotlines and incidents. An idea for Neon Genesis Evangelion-inspired Sisters of Battle were worked into the fluff, and Mono became an undercover Inquisitor hunting down the rogue Arger (read: Ikari). Null became an obvious Priest (an Onanist monk, a Faplain!).

I wanted to start up a marine force (or get someone else to) and an idea for Smiths-style Marines failed horribly. Then I listened to Metal Box, and got the idea for another chapter, that this thread is currently host to. Ideas proliferate like cancer. In excising them from myself, I give the rest of ye something to look at.

I've been here on 40k Online for just over a year now.
'Tis great to have a place where I can constructively spew all this junk and have someone think it's great.

Quote

I'll take your point, I'm never going to be the cleanest sculptor or most detailed painter, I'm really only doing this for my own pleasure. It's very cathartic to get all this pain onto a page. I know it's toy soldiers (and can never forget that), but maybe, just maybe, I might be changing people's ideas and giving a bit of inspiration.

I thought I should get back into the aul' 40k after suffering a series of epileptic fits brought on by drugs and heavy drinking. I had several projects of larger scope than what's on the site, but they were going nowhere. I wanted to do something for fun and get away from what my life had become.

And I'm Irish, coming from a land of Beckett and Joyce I had to do the old sod
proud and write a load of crap.

The pre-Heresy chapter is based off Recluse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Recluse) Spiders.
The full motto is 'Terror's the Certainty, Evil the Putrid Excess of Self-Righteous and Self-Justifying Goodness.' Sounds great, means nearly nothing: Those who actively say they are in the Emperor's light are those with the least faith. The Recluses fought in the grey, for the grey, with the grey.

SWEEPING EDITS:
Rhino with horrible cut-up garbage spewed everywhere, really dregs of it, sick evil civilisation, the basic human rottenness, the sex that passes the censor. Physically painfull to look upon it, makes the eyes hurt to see it.

Be like a Rhino with 5 inch billboard coming out of a groove behind the doors on top, with small vertical battens to hold the removeable plasticard board in place.

make the Rhino tentative ectoplasmic flesh, conveying itself with rancid pseudopodia, like some manner of de- anxeityised amoeba, not controlled by organelles, just dividing and dividing and dividing.

Awful wretched things, the lowest forms of base pathic appeal, the diseased distorted cut-up of millions of atrophied, wasted lives. The pleas of innocents, sex traders, snatches of TV jingles and cavemen chants.
GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR YOUR GOOD HEARTS.

Horrible echoes of machine and mainline, the awful accumulation of some new insectid life, given birth by the build up of knowledge. IT KNOWS. IT SEES.

raw bleeding piles...menstrual cramps....ahhhh, 3 fingers...wouldn't you?... millions could be wrong.... sacrificed to keep the god-barrel emperor clean and sweet smelling...And then that innocent little child would lead them right into the middle of a minefield where they would all get blown to smithereens, not all countries have uniforms that say SHOOT ME I AM THE BAD GUY...Scholfeemr cfeemt do not beslubber feemround.
he feem pop glocking on ur be-atch feemzz... he feem degree, feemnd he feem hot u like degreez...!!!1!!STRAP ELOHHTUOM YM NI deppaf I...it's probably a fetish for the forbidden. Who wants to look at panties when they are flashed all the time?...Choosing bad holes for all the little boys and girls.... MACHO LACRIMATIONS... No more broken hearts, just black eyes... Hidden smiles, fisting in aisles... Tea and smiles now, but in 2 weeks they have you trained to amphetamine parrot on sight of them, and ejaculate with shame whenever the Emperor thrusts a mile wide golden ethereal phallus into your ether. This is His light, and it shines from his Monumental white lighthouse, protoplasm spurting white-hot into the mouths of thousands.
International, transdimensional. It’s what they don’t tell you in the primer...I swear I once saw this Tyrannic organism with an orgone it used to batter tanks with. It beslubbered the dry way through reinforced rockcrete and plasteel and flooded acid bath on High Command, screaming ‘I COME’ in insectid dulcet tones, the Commissar neckshotting those who ran rather than drown in ant sperm...Hits on a re-roll, fails to wound.

Thread over.

The Idiot [Insane]:
The Ultramarine Force Commander originally overseeing the Recluses, Captain Crassus was taken hostage and later mind-drilled by e himself. Humiliated and then co-opted under psychic control, his body passed numbly into the ranks of the Outsiders. Became insane like ANgle#, spikes began to grow from his undead flesh. It was around this time he became possessed by a Hollow. He sought out his original power sword and storm bolter, and seized command of the squad he had drifted into. Torn between what he once knew and what he is now trapped in, Zuvassin can only smile at his plight. Just as planned...

He's still a WIP, toying with the idea of putting a drill bit through the hole where his right eye was and giving him the usual Outsiders treatment. He'll be finished at a much later date. Salvaged from an IG commander.

*Cough* Sort of a looted Ork... A Khorne Berzerker was slain while fighting alongside the Outsiders against an Ork Waagh that had become trapped in the Eye of Terror. By some confusing process... God, I don't know. Basically, the Berserker was trapped in the backpack that the Ork had looted along with some power armoured legs. The Berzerker became self-aware and used the Outsider's traits to grow tentacles with which to control the Ork. He slapped a multi-melta where the Ork's face used to be, and uses the Orkish ability to make anything work by simply believing in it, combined with the Outsider's traits, to exist and to remain alive, for the simple joys of indiscriminate slaughter. *Cough*

The little tube on the hand cannon is from a 2nd edition plastic guardian, the body is an Ork torso, the legs are assault marines. The backpack was a Berzerker's, noticed a little face on it, jacked it up on the torso and began greenstuffing a brain coming out of the backback, representing the Berzerk's will to live.

Scoop [Sane]:Insanely bloated Havok who lost the use of his legs in the Shelliac Purging, replacing them with a landspeeders anti-gravity unit.

Still a WIP, missing major greenstuffing and plenty of wires and antennae.

Also began work on converting old 3rd ed Terminators into Chaos ones. Basically, a transport carrying ruined suits of Tactical Dreadnaught armour for refitting became isolated in a warp storm and was raided by the Outsiders. The Hollows then possessed these suits of armour, and several later became infected by the Obliterator virus. Eventually, every last one will become a conglomeration of hate and weapons systems. Going to be awesome when I get around to it.

And eh... that's pretty much it for the night.

EDIT: Regarding the Smiths style Marines: These Charming Marines, a Lamentors progentitor Chapter. Unfortunately, some flaw in the geneseed made them liable to mope around in bedsits, moaning about their life as servants of the Emperor. Say things like: Horus, It was really nothing... Strange, I wrote this (bar odd weekends of codeine, clove oil and alcohol) while sober as a judge. I am naturally off my beslubbering rocker, and as such, amn't under ordinary constraints. The more you do with an open mind, the more radical you become. So brew that 'shroom tea, and myself and e shall open the Word Hoard:

Intercepted by Inquisitor Lord SB Marakov one hour before the renegade Chapter 'The Outsiders' made planetfall on Telluria-9, a civilised world of over 6 billion souls.

'The beaten child. The betrayed wife. The politician over a mass grave. Never again, they all say. They say it still. Everyone's waiting for some final straw, for something to fight for. Husbanding strength for a final sprint, waiting for someone to blow the whistle and shout to them 'come on! you can do it now!'

Not to challenge a status quo, because it reflects badly on us all. The Outsider sits in his cell and wonders about his mother's death. The perception gap: 40,000 years ago they promised Utopia. How is today? Absolutism, defeated only by true entropy. Ah, entropy, my first love. 'Hey guys! We won!' A choice between arrogant self- sufficiency and fear-numbed tastebuds. But he's not at all thirsty. We, denied, our Other beaten back by their Order. Their terror, our pissour er terror heh heh heh.

Stockholm syndrome. Identifying with your oppressors. Mother, mother, why won't you look at me MOTHER??!! 'Hidden fisting, windows misting, doing the piss thing. Seen it in her eyes. She just becomes a tube of meat when you're finished, any identity brutally washed away by fists, knees and knives. Held guns, crucified nuns, baked buns.

Genuinely the worst people. Total freedom, freedom to do whatever we wanted. Image of woman, shot in head, dumped out of car with dead baby. They'd removed it's fingernails with pliers to make the mother talk. People say it's sick: it happened in your world first. When politicians talk about freedom, freedom to do what you want to do, do what you want to do: go out and get loaded.

Never answered it, only walked away from the question. I who said I would never have any regrets, don't want to regret anything. I'm still crying after 200 years. Things aren't simple. I worked so hard to have a normal life. Maed with the money, the romance. Met her family. Worked so very hard on convincing myself. Said again and again 'the self is mutable' until I had almost convinced myself. I can't expunge this. More than a decade I gave it to fester. Pretended that I was doing everything I wanted to. Still unfulfilled. Gave it everything. He's got the most beautiful handwriting... It's still not too late.

Reality is the illusion- hallucinogenics, mental illness or forms of epilepsy, break your machinery, allowing you to SEE that everything is subjective, is an overcomplicated interpretation of DATA. More so than anything else, relationships consist of a fireteam capable of taking on the world. Forget what your vox-pops have sold you: all you have now is one another. So breed, the best of you may make it through.

We are prepared to sacrifice our lives in order to assert the values we believe to be true. We don't care whether you worship us, fight us or fear us, we don't care whether the orbital bombardment kills you, whether a daemon eviscerates you, or a bolter obliterates you, we don't care if you pray to your Emperor, hide or choose to kill yourself, in fact, we don't really care anything. We aren't going to lie to you. We're here to kill you. When your propaganda falls silent and your data-slate dies, and the drop-pods start falling, we hope you'll see the truth. Oldstyle [Sane]:The Aspiring Champion of First Squad. Keen to distance himself from his Loyalist identity, he killed another Chaos Space Marine and stole his armour. The loyalist helmet on his trophy rack may in fact be his own, something he actively denies. If you ask him, he'll say he was there at Terra in M.31. His old helmet whispers to him. He screams out at night 'I'M HAPPY.' Orders everyone else to relishes their new Chaotic selves, as much as he does.

He secretly inflicted matching scars on his stolen helmet.

So I got a box of the new CSM recently, and the build has been slow. I was slightly miffed to find out that they had removed the Mutations frame, but that was balanced out by the inclusion of far, far more weapons and bitz.

Well I had an idea for a paint job...

You could paint them white, then get a fine detail (or even a crap one bristle brush!) and put lots and lots of black streaks.

That's not a bad idea. I like the idea of grey, streaked with a black staining decay and these pure white eyes. And they'd just be staring.

Just staring.

Although I particularly like the Marines on the current background of 40kO, they are closer that what I originally envisioned, this faceless grey nanite tide. sweeping away any hope of resistance. That's why I found them so appealing, they could be no bargaining, they were implacable, a force of nature, like a virus or a cancer. Better still, a scalpel. So black, highlighted weakly with grey, then turning that irradiated warpfire blue. Mutations would be as you suggested, that speckled black and white static.

They wouldn't even speak... Oldstyle and Babyhands would be the only human ones remaining. They'd remember Anomie but... no one else would. The other members of the squad would turn and look to them... but those blank white eyes would just stare on through, no hint of recollection, of anything. It would be an army of painful absences, more white than white, more black than black.

They move as though they were one, never breaking pace or stride, never even running. Just standing. Staring. Then suddenly they are inside you, in front, between and behind your lines. Every certainty you ever knew is gone. Everything you believe in falls to the floor in bloody gobbets. You stumble face first into a grey wall. From above, two blank holes burn though you. You never turn to see the monoknife that ends you. You don't even feel it...

I've made a mistake in giving the Marines so much individualism. I didn't set out for them to become Codex: Naked Lunch, I set out to make

a faceless grey nanite tide of Marines.
Once again, I've overwritten it. So, here I back off. I might even retcon Zuvassin out of the fluff.

Despite that, I figure Zuvassin to be the Chaos God of human tragedy. Man is driven to destroy his own happiness. The inherent free will involved in that self-sabotage is what gives Zuvassin his power. Like Tzeench is hope, Khorne is pride, Slaanesh is enjoyment and Nurgle is comfort, Zuvassin is the god of our tragedy.

The Anonymous: (Chosen)
So open to themes and suggestions that enemy squads have used them for cover, only to find that cover grip its shoulder with a lightning claw. They're alway behind you. When you turn around they're still in the mirror. Staring. Just staring. Then they reach out... and Touch you.

Have moved to a 5th dimension in which space and time are relative, and can cross sectors in a eyeblink. Most feared are the days, weeks and even years preceeding an invasion of the Outsiders. The Anonymous blend with the population, and are so blank, so unassuming, that no one can tell what is real and what is just white noise. Bodies appear in crowded marketplaces, triggering mass panics. Blank figures are seen by public buldings, standing like sentinels. No one remarks, because they know they are the only ones to see them.

Late nights, walking home up a back alleyway and you feel this presence. Few drinks on you, figure it's nothing. Keep walking. As you turn, slightest hum of servitor motors. Hiss of hydraulics. Then... nothing.

Your daughter finds you in an armchair the morning afterwards. You stare straight ahead. Only when she tugs your sleeve do you fall into perfect slices and die.

Corridors with scratches going from one end to another. The Planetary Governer wakes one morning to find his home totally empty, his family gone, his personal guard gone and no trace they ever existed. All the windows and doors hang open like empty graves. He wakes with a knife on his chest. It's drenched in his own blood.

'My sister died when she was 6 years old. She drowned. I was 10 at the time. I told everyone that I wasn't paying attention to her when she went into the water, but the truth is I was.

I was in the water with her. I held her down.'
The diarist reads it, and weeps.

*Cough* so yeah.... They all have lightening claws. And infiltrate. Maybe a powerfist or a melta, and an IoS, to represent them always getting the drop on a foe.

Those Chosen are going to run something like : AC with LCs, 3 more with LCs, 1 melta, IoS, with a Rhino, maybe. But where to get 4 matching sets of LCs?

I was originally planning to have a metric tonne of possessed Vindicators, and I'm probably going to buy the Apoc boxed set, then proxy them as Rhinos for smaller games. Wrote a poem called 'The Vindicator' today:

"Catalytic cannon convulses, caught me, the Conscript, cowering outside cover, crushed the crania of comrades, commanders, contained inside our compromised cache, now their catacomb, their corpse cavern.

Craven cowards, those Chaos Corps; cast 'cantations, left me catatonic, cursing central comforts of the Commissariat. Cured by cthonic cathartic hate, I come full circle, seeking co-sanguineous killing, Chaotic communion; claw crashing through class consciousness and clear conclusions.

I, now the Cultist, charge in my cataclysmic, cacophonous coffin, chewing through tired truths with chainsword.

Cough, cry hem, I come!"

That's going to be written on the side of a Vindicator now driven by a Guardsman robbed out of a IG tank sprue. Should be good fun when I get it done.

That Rhino is sick.  I love it.  WOW.

I've printed off most of your Nihil Rifles Cycle and am reading it this morning over some weak tea and Mountain Dew, not mixed.

Very refreshing.

Cool. It's a laugh that I'm re-using 'Clean' for my final English paper 1 exam in June, with all the 40k references excised. I used it in the mocks and got 84/100, having memorised a version that was edited by a far better writer than I am. Of all the stories I wrote, I love 'The Trooper' the most. That far-out feeling you get past midnight on the streets. I was going to revisit it, add in more, I dunno.

Forget about 'Against it All...', it was filled with fail and AIDS. I am inahrrested in beginning once more over the summer. Very inahrrested.

Found a strip of film negatives while on a psychodrift around Dublin. Rather than being the torture porn or paranormal I had hoped, it was (rather disappointingly) tourist snaps. I felt like I had stolen a part of someone's soul by taking it, as though I had power over them. Then I felt ill, and had to sit down for a while.

Found it in my pocket today, got the idea for another Demolisher: Camera Obscura: with lens mounted in place of demo cannon, takes pictures. Derived from the notion that camera steals part of soul. Now upscale that. Capable of demolishing buildings, their purpose taken from them. Roll of film negatives sprouting from the back, try to focus on the Outsider's holiday snaps, the images wash and separate in a meaningless mosaic...

e confronts Ultramarine Chapter Master, asks why he never got the recognition he felt he deserved. Because they were a stealth regiment. Anonymity was their power. Rank and file Recluses held an anarchic individualism above all else. Marines were often dropped just in combat squads over a series of months, bringing planets down from within. Because of their independence, often find themselves in the employ of Inquisitors

But e etches all that away. They are now an Anonymous legion. Now everyone's the same.

Babyhand and Oldstyle are the last two at an intergalactic party, everyone else is a beslubbering zombie...

Marine HQ actually in the city of Interzone, explains cityfighting skills (most monasteries are located in harsh, dangerous environs, giving the Marines the skills that kill in these scenic locales). Few remaining Loyalists in Reclusium? The Chaplain? What of Null? How does he fit in to it all?

e condemned as a Sender by Anomien Factualist party. Inquisitor Spurroughs: 'Emphatically we do not oppose telepathic research. In fact, telepathy properly used and understood could be the ultimate defense against any form of organized coercion or tyranny on the part of pressure groups or individual control addicts. We oppose, as we oppose atomic war, the use of such knowledge to control, coerce, debase, exploit or annihilate the individuality of another living creature. Telepathy is not, by its nature, a one-way process. To attempt to set up a one-way telepathic broadcast must be regarded as an unqualified evil ...'

And then e takes his fascistic regime to the Eye, but ultimately, in pleading to Zuvassin the Undoer, will only bring himself down. So Zuvassin would be like the factualist sting in the ass, and the Utramarine and Imperial forces arrayed against e would be the red rubber strap on. He's beslubbered, either way.

Some kind of Hollow Greater Daemon? Suppresses peoples awareness of its presence and actions. Name: Empty

It becomes interested in your squad, and wanders along with you. It's not invisible, but your eyes just sort of slide off of it. You want to look away from it, and then you don't remember seeing it.

When it gets curious, it just grabs one of you starts biting chunks off with its shark-like mouth.

You sort of vaguely miss the victim, but you can't quite comprehend why he's missing, and you get confused when you try to think about it.

Meanwhile, it's right there with you, fascinated by all of your activities, staring down at you with its black eyes, panting through its open mouth, thinking about which one of you to eat next. And you just can't manage to think about it.

Also, planning an making an upright Defiler, masquerading as a captured Imperial Knight Titan named Stackt, with a princeps named Anesthesia. Like an Evangelion Unit running on haemophiliac blood. Utilises a 'plasma' cannon. Drawings may follow on the weekend. Taken from a Teardrop Explodes-inspired comic I never got around to drawing called Factor VIII. So it's going to be a model for that, too. This cross-pollination of work has proved very fruitful.

Pater Gregor is famous in the Zone as the last surviving Loyalist of the Recluses Chapter. Imagine a Rhino with that slapped on the front. You could proxy it as a Vindicator, a Predator, even a standard Rhino. Back of the Rhino, the doors on the top, hold a sarcophagus. In it is an mp3 player. The wires go to the front speakers and above the model speakers you rest your real headphones. Then you hit PiL's Albatross and it plays while you take your turn, Perfect for an army made of noise!

Summer's come, leaving me reeling. I've actually been getting up early every morning and working on some project. 6th year gave me such focus, now I am bereft of that focus. Here is Stackt:

First thing I'm going to have to do is separate the hull of the Defiler into a hip and shoulder setion. The Corpse Titan will be walking on the front 'crab' claws. The exposed spine will have a central canal, allowing a re-enforcing rod to strengthen the fragile model. I'll have to scratch build the head and arm. The left (amphetamine parrot tentacle thing) will come from the Defiler CCW. This may later be replaced with a tubing/syringe blood plasma cannon. It's a mighty undertaking.

Was in the grip of an Idea yesterday, the notes I took were from the tail end of it, and as such are insufficient and fragmentary. The first piece is just flavour. This is regarding the Daemons of Zuvassin:

Nestled beneath the deep universal Time of Warpspace, fat blind pink things feed on what falls through the gaps. In the torpid, dull waters of this realm, gods gestate in larval form, queuing for a taste of the Real Thing. The only colours available are slow, bloated corpse colours, ones that made it through the fabric of reason, like insects through the gaps in a coffin. The only sounds are the discarded, discordant tones of TV jingles, charnel laughter and pathic caveman chants.

Like a broken womb bleeding into an internal sea, viewing it is the ultimate desecration, an unspeakable mutilation of the soul. This is the root, where all human impulse begins. Like a blind, eyeless fossilised foetus just below the surface, feeling its way to light and true precipitation over a period of centuries as the matrix of rock around it is eroded. Then escape, the feasting on secret places.

The denizens are few, drifting and silent. They decay as they live; banks and banks of feeder tendrils and writhing hooked paddles shutting off like agonised insectid switchboards. Creatures the size of small planets rot as they drift. Like decaying, drifting whales they spawn whole ecosystems of death.

Wretched parodies of civilisation tail the dying creatures, whole colonies of numb Feeders wretchedly bound to falling motes of accreted universal awfulness. These Feeders are in turn preyed upon by skeletal cephalopods many thousands of times larger that sink, die and rot even as they gorge themselves

Like a torn womb turned inside out, the lizard foetus inside ejected… something so hidden, so sacred so abjectly violated, any meaning it once had torn away by a forced mental emetic, precious hopes and dreams now in a basin of amphetamine parrot, mucus and vomit… like the movements of a larval police state, the first hideous stirrings of insect life, like the brain suddenly becoming a sex organ and instantaneously being penetrated by a rabid black supremacist, a vibrating soundless communion of meta something and Nothing from the beyond… like white hot flashbulbs of forced screaming anal orgasm… stand in your corner and Push… bland profiteers of terror and control… empty entities waiting for a Live One….

________

Lesser Hollows make rapid, snapping movements. Corpse-pale, their screaming blankness leaves enemies paralysed, allowing the Hollows to vacuum quintessence with long tongues and hair-lined disc mouths. Contained within is a limitless pocket dimension, hence theirs is a thirst impossible to quench.

As the name suggests, Hollows are capable of assuming any identity for limited periods of time. They have been known to possess suits of power armour, weapons systems, and even whole vehicles. Certain members of the Ordo Malleus have theorised that the entire renegade chapter is, in fact, animated by these hateful creatures. This sinister method of possession was outlined by the now excommunicated Dr. ++DATA PURGED: A clean mind is a happy mind =I= ++:

‘Let's take one of your brain cells and possess it with a daemonic replica. That part of your brain is dead, but continues to more or less function. Every day we'll possess another brain cell, a slow and gradual process. The living cells will have time to be accustomed to the daemonic cells and by working in unison they will be able to complete things just as they always did and your development will continue seemingly unaltered from the original plan. What happens when all your brain cells are daemonic? To your CONSCIOUSNESS, you dig? The body will still be able to hold a conversation and react to stimulus exactly as you would have while alive, but would your world slowly become dimmer and dimmer until finally you felt like you were just a passenger in your own body going along for the ride, then an observer, and finally nothing?

The boys from B Company were real tasty, no more feeling in their eyes than a crab’s on the end of a stalk, yet they went through the daily Imperial motions, even asking about wives and children. My ignorant rather unsavoury chap, what-ho old bean? collegues told me they were shell-shocked, that they had seen things from the Warp itself and survived thanks to the Emperor’s grace, but such people are no better than party poops. When B company began to take on smooth anonymous countenances and long tongues, my so-called colleagues showed their true colours. Had my baboon familiar, Violet, lobotomise them with a lasgun.

If the method of psychic control could be isolated, the Inquisition could eventually reduce any hesitant heretic to Automatic Obedience… any Dummkopf could become a sleeper agent. Seed Gue’la settlements, mutant populations… rogue psykers would turn on their followers, entire Hive worlds would find it impossible to even think about Chaos. A functioning police state needs no police… the thought of heresy would be impossible.

These daemons got it something special for terror and control.’

Imperial forces fighting the Outsiders must beware of residual Hollow infestation. So far, mind wipes have proved ineffective. The corruption becomes part of the persona, subtly replacing the individual, until the person is nothing more than a Hollow shell…
A case of nothing being more important than nothing. Daemonic incursions have occurred months, even years later, with the Guard or Marines in question the focus of the possession.

Worst of all, their blank silent screams erode the sanity of the listeners. Inquisitor ||||||+DATA PURGED+||||||||||, part of the conclave investigating the then-Recluses chapter, later virus-bombed Telluria VI; the last vox-recording before her suicide admitting she killed 12 billion souls ‘not to hear the silence’ as she died.

___

The stats are of the generic daemons from the Chaos Marines codex, with the added effect of enemies being at –1 Leadership within 12” and striking at Initiative 10 in the first round of combat, disregarding cover or frag grenades. Squad leader would have an upgrade: Warp Scream. Take a LD test in combat or only hit on sixes.

If anyone has read the Daemon Legion codex I would appreciate more of a solid idea. Rending? Power weapons? Boosted I?

TL:DR ‘NO, YOU ARE THE DAEMONS!’ daemons.

Unusually for daemons, Hollows despise the Warp. They do whatever they can to remain in realspace. Once they have breached into our dimension, it's very difficult to remove the residual psychic stain of infestation.

Due to the daemons unusual method of latent possession, members of the Ordo Malleus have declared areas clean, only for the daemons to reappear decades later.

Case in point, the Tellurian Invasion. After the Chaos forces retreated due to the intervention of Grey Knights, the summoned daemons faded. But in one particular schoolhouse, a single spirit entered a cockroach in order to continue its existence. Imperial forces did not fumigate the area, as the daemonic incursion was over. Once the ground had been re-consecrated, the school was opened once more.

Terrifyingly, entire generations were invisibly corrupted.
 (https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2F1215387174432.jpg&hash=b912c4ed8fa9f485023b45d4a55a094f3a502933)
No one ever knew. The people themselves didn't. It was only when an off-world photographer visited the school was the truth revealed.

Telluria was judged beyond reprieve by Inquisitor Lord Salewicz and was virus bombed in M41.4354.1981. No living creatures survived.

Watched Spirited Away, and the black No Face guy struck me as the embodiment of a Empty, a Hollow Greater Daemon. (https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2F03.jpg&hash=fe877605d609c946203cb597e3bcfc77d12cbe37)
So, like that but with added awesome. Working from the Generic Greater Daemon. He possesses an Anonymous Chosen.

Serbian massacre graves just vertical pointed slats. Would make for exciting terrain piece. Diorama: Nihil Rifles trooper pours gasoline over fresh mass grave. Lights Tau sympathiser flag and drops it in. Walks away.

Humans as four dimensional creatures. Physical space small but space in time is huge. Reversal of time dilated photography (moving humans appear as sand dunes) shows the human figure. By this same method, reverse still objects and find the true image. These gaps within Time are what I experience occasionally. This is the realm of the Hollows.

Noise Marine or Marine with boombox. Like those tracks supposed to give the effects of drugs. This give the effect of special weapons through handwavium. Perhaps it's all in the mind, a placebo plasma gun. This intersection of real and white noise fits in with the theme. Mount a bolter on his backpack.

Outsiders excel at destroying enemy battle plans. Guard Corps (bodies of thousands of men) fall to two hundred Marines. No stand up fight. Destroy command network and supply dumps with Assault marines and Scouts. Enemy forces chase specters in the forms of the Marines while being bled by Bikers. Vet atrocity raids break morale. Enemy paralysed. Withdraw. Same plan after the Heresy. This time they are under the god of sabotage and failure. NOTHING AS PLANNED!

Outsiders reverse polarity of an Eldar D-Cannon. amphetamine parrot gets real, sane. Laws of physics, not Rule of Cool, applies once more. This is often fatal in the 40k universe. Feels like the merest crackle of baseline static in the silence. How is babby formed how girl get pragnent?

Have you ever played Legend of the Five Rings, the roleplaying game? Your description of the Hollows sounds like the Living Darkness from that game, even down to the faceless/generic daemonic corruption.

I never have. Strictly 40k for now. I've never even touched a dice with more than 6 sides! It's my loss though, and I'm trying to get a group for some pen and paper RPGs. As of yet, no success :(.

Google-fu has this to say:
Quote
The Lying Darkness is existential void that pre-dates the existence of the world. The world was born from Nothing in three stages. One-third of the world was created out of its fear of loneliness, another third out of its desire for companionship, and the last third came from its remorse for accidentally creating the world and therefore ruining the perfect, empty void.
This is all very familiar existentialist territory. I took my pre-occupations with void and vacuum, and made something out of it. You could call nothingness a recurring theme.

Hollows were originally going to be
Quote
Noise Marines:
They attack with sound, their enemies driven insane by irradiating promises of consumerist satisfaction, tearing each other apart over the dead whispering ghosts of power showers and vacuum cleaners, or turned to bleeding slush by massive, rapid tumour growth.
Failing that, these Hollows bare themselves in waves of screaming feedback, overloading nervous systems and stripping away the atoms of the soul with the joyous music of hate and void.
I liked the idea so much, and needed a deus ex machina to animate dead marines. The Hollows became lesser daemons of Zuvassin. Bland, anonymous, almost impossible to stop because they aren't there. They are dedicated to beslubbering things up.  You said they are generic/faceless daemons.. that's what they are meant to be. Anonymity is frightening to anyone.

I suppose the Hollows really came from PiL's first two albums. It was about a man, John Lydon, who was hated because of a persona, Johnny Rotten. These two albums were about him losing that identity, limiting his public image,  and setting up an image, Public Image Limited, his own image. That image was undefined. This movement of selves is present in Joyce's 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. It's also about me discarding me old identity (faceless, ordinary Joe in a gang) and projecting who I will be. I have emancipated myself from my old life, but now I am Empty, I am a Hollow.
The challenge and the joy lies in filling myself with experience. The pain lies in remaining as empty inside as 'e'.

This is the wonderful thing about expression. It's a process. If I left this thread as it is, I could be happy, because I now know more about myself then when I started. [Sure, it's on an obscure 40k website. Sure, I've got about 12 models made and hardly any of this will make it onto the tabletop. Who gives a beslubber? I enjoyed writing it.] I'll go for a decent impression of a pretentious teen-pop sensation: is that not art?

Also, i am naked right now.

Well, if you can find the supplement "Way of Shadow" at, for instance, a game convention or something, I suggest picking it up.  It gives a better, more detailed description than that wikipedia article (which frankly is a bit lacking), and details, mostly through stories but also through actual game rules/text how such things work, how people are drawn to the Darkness, and how it affects them.  It's good inspiration - but you seem to have that in spades already.

I shall certaintly track it down. The stats and examples would be good inspiration for a Dark Heresy game I'm planning. There'd probably be a few ideas to steal wholesale take inspiration from.
Thank you.

Greatest word-filter ever. It's been good.

Had a flick through the Daemon Legion codex. Thought I'd post stats on Hollows:

Troops:
Hollows:
18 points each

WS  BS  S  T  W  I   A  Ld  Sv
 4     0   4   4  1   4   2  10  5++

They have Daemons, Rending.
Insubstantial:
Enemy must roll 3d6 and multiply result by three to check if the Hollows are visible if shooting or assaulting. If they are not in sight, the enemy may choose a different target. They also count as having frag grenades. Grey Knights are immune to this effect.

Residual possession:

If a Hollow is killed in an assault, the enemy must pass a leadership test for every kill. Make a note of every failed Ld test and the points value of this model. The Chaos player receives half the points rounded down at the end of the game.

May upgrade one model to The Scream at 15 points.

Elites:

The Vacant:
30 points each

WS  BS  S  T  W  I   A  Ld  Sv
 5     0   4   4  1   5   2  10  5++

They are Daemons, have power weapons and The Scream.

The Scream:
Enemies are at –1 Leadership within 12”. Hollows strike at Initiative 10 in the first round of combat, disregarding cover or frag grenades.

Squad leader would have an upgrade: See Me and Suffer.
Enemy must pass a Ld test in combat or only hit on sixes.
Squad upgrade is 15 points.

HQ:

Empty (Herald):
115 points.

WS  BS  S  T  W  I   A  Ld  Sv
 5     0   4   4  2   5   2  10  5++

It has Daemon, The Hunger, Sabotage!, Insubstantial and The Scream. Also Feel no Pain.

The Hunger:
Any model that takes a wound must pass a Ld test or be consumed. This restores any lost wounds up to a maximum of 2. It also has power weapon effect.

Sabotage!

Pass a psychic test. Any one enemy unit within 18 inches gains the Gets Hot! special rule. This represent weapons malfunctions as the Hollow rumbles laugher.

This. This is an agent of Zuvassin.

He is a god of destruction for destruction's sake. He is the patron Chaos god of revolutionaries, anarchists and pure nihilists, but the joke is ultimately on them. Zuvassin destroys their plans of destruction. The worst thing they can do is take it all too seriously.

Like every Chaos god, Zuvassin was born out of conscious impulse. In this case it was the predilection for destruction in sentient beings. This can manifest as essential revolution, death for rebirth. It also comes to the fore as sabotage, suicide, self-destruction.

The Herald of Zuvassin is 'The Man Who Laughs'. If the person wants to be forgettable to infiltrate and destroy, he will make them so anonymous that they receive no credit. If they want charisma to manipulate the mobs, he gives it to them. They carry out his every order, but when he's got nothing to do, they turn on him. If someone wants to bring it all down, he'll help them bring it all down on themselves. DESTROY. ATTACK. DIE.

What is important in this equation is the free will involved. The patronised must enter the bargain with free will, they must act on their own accord, they must destroy themselves. This is the essence of tragedy in the classic sense, as I mentioned a few months ago. Iago from Othello was my original empty herald, but Ledger's Joker inflates the concept to appropriate levels of awesome. Plus, everyone from our subculture will recognise the character and immediately identify with him.

For the model, Dorden from the Gaunt's Ghosts line, in white panstick, red lipstick and black eyeshadow. The only question that remains: why so srs? Let's put a :3 on that face... HAHA HAHA HAH HAHA!!

Began planning the models for Hollows while I was in work: I was going to get a box of WHFB Zombies and mix them with parts from a variety of 40k races, showing how the residual possession eroded the original beings into Daemons. This gives me flavoursome models. It's also pretty cheap. Greenstuff will be used on the bodies to make them as smooth, as  blank as doll. The standard bearer of a skeleton on a post will make for a nice Icon once I get round to it: The skeleton crucified, missing segments replaced with a painted card of that segment. The head is missing, replaced by a hologram of a bird in flight.

If anyone has the Zombie unit, I'd be delighted to know if you think this is wise. The trad zombie stuff will be shaved off, don't you worry. I just need a suitable base model.

Wow man, your writing is always a trip.  Love it.  And I'm sure your Dark Heresy campaign will be mind-blowing.  It's been ages since I've touched multi-sided dice, but I'd consider going out of retirement to play a bewildered Inquisitor in whatever setting you came up with.

I've got my first player into the game. Having bought d10s on Monday (then putting on my robe and wizard hat, etc) I spent the rest of the day rolling them in intimate social situations. The significant Other was not pleased.

I got a good friend over ostensibly to practice drawing, then tempted him into rolling a character for DH. Since this was our first PnP, we rolled Guardsmen. There was only the two of us, we were players and GMs. I put us into a simple dungeon and we practiced combat. Now that we've both got a good grasp of it, I'm trying to get more players for the real game. It's not going to be much fun with Guardsmen.

Ideally, for an RP set on Anomie, the people are going to be somewhat suspect. I wasn't too keen on having Guardsmen at every turn. Too straight. It's going to be a little more complex than a run and gun affair. Once the Hollows start to come into play, and slabs of undifferentiated tissue allow the total restructuring of a person, the players are going to be in for a hell of a trip. We're going to attack the human image.

What about the Obscura addicts? As they suffer more and more penalties from junk-lack, what would they not sink to? If an Agent needed to infiltrate, to what point would he be willing to maintain cover?

NPC Tech-Priestess   slowly becomes one with the planet's machines. After some time, it's unclear if she was ever human, is the expression of some robotic ideal. Robot means 'forced labour' in Czech. They want a movement from Babylon to Zion. In Lain's slender frame is a nascent God.

Reading Burroughs' 'The Soft Machine'... every 3-4 page chapter is a potential situation. It's a cut-up of his own work, his Word Hoard.

The dugout canoe twisted slowly and stopped, touching a ruined jetty. Carl got out with his Nordic rucksack and walked to a square on high ground. He felt a touch on his shoulder light as wind. A man in mouldy grey police tunic and red flannel underwear one bare foot swollen and fibrous like old wood covered with white fungus, his eyes mahogany coloured flickered as the watcher moved in and out. He gasped out the word 'Control' and slipped to the ground. A man in grey hospital pyjamas eating handfuls of dirt and trailing green spit crawled over to Carl and pulled at his pants cuff. Another moves forwards on brittle legs breaking little puffs of bone meal. His eyes lit up a stern glare went out in smell of burning metal. From all sides the came pawing hissing spitting:
'Papeles!'
'Documentos!'
'Pasaporte!'
'What is all this scandal?' the Commandante in clean khaki was standing on a platform overlooking the square. Above him was an elaborate multilevelled building of bamboo. His shirt was open a brown chest smooth as ivory. A little pistol in red leather cover crawled slowly across his skin leaving an iridescent trail of slime.
'You must forgive my staff if they do not quite measure up to your Imperial ideal of spit and polish...backward.. . uninstructed... each living alone and cultivating his little virus patch... They have absolutely nothing to do and the solitude...' He tapped his forehead. His face melted and changed under the flickering arc lights.
'But there must be more than thirty of them about,' said Carl.
'The Commandante gave him a sharp look. 'They are synchronised of course. They can not see or even infer each other so think he is only police officer on post. Their lines you understand never cross and some of them are already...'
'And some of them are already dead. This is awkward since  they are not legally responsible. We try to bury them on time even if  they retain intact protest reflex. Like Gonzalez the Earth eater. We bury him three times'. The Commandante held up three fingers sprouting long white tendrils.' always he eats his way out. And now if you will excuse me the soccer scores are coming in from the Capital. One must pretend an interest.'
'318 known dead in Lima soccer riot...panic in stadium...323 dead...'

+++

After that it breaks down into the things I've been warned by moderators of. Carl is mugged by the assistant, then sculpted into a woman by the Commandante using U.T. ... then it dissolves into a meaningless mosaic once again. Will synthesise the extract for DH. A ripe book, a very ripe book.

Grab bag of stuff today:

Player character has Charm of blue wire in Dark heresy. At a junction where the party must defuse a bomb and the bomb disposal NPC lies dead, he takes it out and says: 'to defuse a bomb you need to cut the blue wire'. He takes his knife, cuts the wire, then... silence. GM cuts the game to four months later. They all survived.

Hier[Sane]:
A four hundred year old marine listening on the galactic Rim, listening to the dwindling transmissions of mankind a billion years out. Every piece of data we ever sent out, our last messages. Thousands of planets are already dead. People sent their last messages into space.

The regrets, the pathos and the wit. A series of screams.
What he records is the laughter. As the last radio wave from Anomie leaves the galactic rim, he hunches over and plays the tape: three seconds of a child's laughter, cut off suddenly.

Got out 8-year old Paint Marines to mock up colours. What I did took about 20 mins a model and looks good from a distance. A few observations:

+The damage on the models looks fantastic once painted.
+The base colour scheme (grey and yellow) looks alright.
+Yellow gives a crap coverage. Recommend a good fluorescent yellow?
+No idea what to do for the warpfire coming out of the cracks in the armour. The turquoise doesn't look all that good, Will experiment further on it.

Here's the base model:

my only question is your marines move like white noise so when you paint your models and convert them
are you going to paint/model anything on them to represent their untuned tv movement? (if im making any sense :P)
i think it would look really good if you had the odd few marines modelled like that, the only thing i could think of to represent
this would be swirls or somthing around them.. but im sure someone with your mind could think of something well... more :D
That was said months ago and I kept it in my head. Still looking for a decent solution. The black and white stippled static looks too monochrome. Working on it myself, but advice from experience painters would be very welcome.

Try the Citadel Foundation yellow, it actually covers pretty well, and makes it easier for the lighter yellows to cover.

A person was looking for ideas for a DH campaign opening:
Quote
I would like it to be contained and combat heavy, but also investigative. I was thinking of having a ruined research lab on a airless moon or deathworld that mysteriously sent out a distress beacon and has yet to be heard from. We'll say that some important Imperial ship was docked there and the Acolytes are called to investigate. But whats there? What caused all this? Are the people alive? Dead? Possessed?

What ever killed them was still going to be in the facility. The Inquisitor orders them to go in gung-ho and blast whatever they find. After a spell in the warp, they touch down on the planet, equip re-breathers and travel on foot to the station.

They get hailed on the vox-caster. It's fully manned. Everyone's alive and well. There's no record of a a distress signal ever being sent.

When they arrive, have the people incredulous that they should be under attack. The players will be under suspicion from the very beginning. Keep them harassed, keep goading them into combat as they try and investigate. Play up any gung-ho antics. Rumors abound about the players being there to purge the station and the situation escalates into mass hysteria.

When they commit some grave error, the Stair Guard arrive. Either pull the Inquisition card, talk your way out of it or blast them. Talk your way out of it is going to be a Very Hard test as the people are so =][= suspicious. The Inq Card gives an auto-pass. Both options lead to the party being brought to see the 'Commander'. They pass into a 'decontamination chamber', which is suddenly vented into space [airlock purge].

Except the players have rebreathers, and there is gravity on the planet. Players pissed. NPCs terrified of being purged after you pulled the Inquisition card. You gain access after some hacking, they begin attacking in self defence. You have no choice but to attack back. All your attempts to calm things down fail. You kill everything.

The last one you kill is the astropath sending a distress signal. All the players must attempt a very easy awareness test. On a pass, they twig and then wig. They check their chronos. They arrived three hours before the distress signal was sent. Gain d5 insanity points upon a failed willpower test.

No-one would have Knowledge:Warp and be aware of the time dilation effect at such an early level. I'm not sure how I'd react to metagame. I'd force them to continue with that knowledge, and force them to take Willpower tests to avoid insanity points. I don't like metagaming...

How you spin it to the Inquisitor will be interesting: If they fervently stick to 'they were heretics sir and we had to purge them', then nod, good job, and on it goes [plus 100 EXP]. If they say they failed in their mission, the Inquisitor is pissed. No EXP bonus.

Give the players a debrief from the Inquisitor and re-assign them to a different mission... on some wretched swamp planet: [From Burrough's 'The Soft Machine', see above posts.]

Mutants with mutated Arbites in control? Resist corruption, investigate source of control cults and cut their lines.

I think it's a very nice opening to a Dark Heresy game. After that, no-one will trust anything.

The classic steampunk gentleman. Part of the sizeable contingent that left the Imperium and then left Chaos. He's carving a small steampunk empire on Persephone-VIII, a civilised world. He's got a considerable enterage, including a servitor that cranks his gatling bolter and another that shovels caesium into his atomic steam-engine powerpack. e tempted his back in with promises of all the tea and crumpets he can stomach.

He's got a brass monolce in addition to all that. A handlebar moustache had to take a dive after I ran out of space. I was considering adding more fluted steam vents to his top hat. The model seemed to be dragging on forever, buty I'm glad I finished it. Looks business.

I've heard nothing but glowing reports of the Foundation paints. You've tipped me over the edge in terms of purchasing them.

Got the next player interested while playing Mass Effect. I'm going to college in a few weeks time, I hope to find tabletop gamers there too. Law and Business, here I come!

The Minuteman [Dead]:
Once a proud and anarchic Recluse, the Minuteman rejected e's rebellion and followed his own path. Several years later, he found himself low on bolter rounds and decided to seek employment. Clocking in, then out, he was quickly reduced to wage slavery. The more he killed on the weekends, the more debt he was in. Eventually his last minute ran out and he was killed by his master, Steamboy, and sacrificed to the machine. Such are the hazards of a part-time menial vocation.

Minuteman is rocking a heavy bolter from his chest. He's the product of too much glue inhalation. I found bitz I never knew existed.

Eventually, this squad will replace Scoop's Havoc squad. While it was a nice idea, they weren't as interesting as these guys.

Had my first DMing experience with three teenage girls, of all people. I convinced them to roll characters, and for want of anything else, I did 'Illumination' from the rulebook. It was kinda slow because the 14-year old insisted on rolling every dice for 30+ seconds. The characters they rolled were freakishly good: all stats over 30, some 40.

Feedback on it: Interaction :D.
Any unnecessary story telling: ::)

So the Research station purge isn't even going to have an exposition at the start. It's going to be 3 Kill-Team troopers you have been seconded to talking. You're already en route to the research facility. You're there to kill everything. How quick is that?

I think the book's adventure kinda sucked. From what I've learned, an RP should play out like a short story. Keep it fast and enthralling.

So the first adventure is combat heavy. I've been describing it as Gears of War with dice. Once everything is dead, the Man Who Laughs, Zuvassin's herald, is heard chuckling as he walks away. If a psyniescence test is made, they know the warp is near. This sets up the next adventure.

Set on Anomie, the players take down a control cult in the southern swamps. On the way, they help capture Domo, a mute Pariah child. They are assisted by the Girl Who Didn't Know, a blank in the employ of Inquisitor Mono. He will return in 15 years time, on Nihil. That is, if the players give him to the black ships...

5 years pass. The Man Who Laughs is terrorising the city:
'Nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If tomorrow I tell the press that like a scummer will get shot, or a truckload of Guard will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all, part of the plan. But when I say that one little old Imperial Governor will die, well then everyone loses their minds! Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes Chaos. I'm an agent of Chaos.'

Hollows begin infiltrating. Maintain order as an Agent of the Inquisition.
Ultimately, the war further destabilises the planet. Anomie falls 10 years later. You all make it off the planet in an RP of the last days.

Then, you're in the Inquisitor's trusted cadre. It's Nihil, going into Colony.
But something goes wrong. The Inquisitor is not as he should be.

I'd imagine that there would be over thirty sessions in that big arc. It's good.

Not sure where to start today. Outsiders recently became something else. The message changed:

never anything

anymore

Data is never destroyed, only altered, corrupted. That simply becomes part of the persona, as I said in the first post. Almost a year later, I've come full circle. How can the Outsiders lose? They are a grey faceless nanite tide. Automatons have no concept of victory or loss. Like bacteria, they perform one function until they are destroyed. They are living to die. Suddenly, parking a 10-men squad of Plague Marines in front of an enemy position becomes a viable tactic. This is how I call a victory. 40k was originally played with a GM adjudicating. the victory How can you win against something so meaningless and implacable? The data can't be destroyed.

Nothing is a loss. Nothing is a victory. Zuvassin is pleased. That's why the story 'Pawn' is important. Without the will to go on, without the self-knowlege to end it. They don't know they exist. In the end, the CSM would put a bolt in his brain. In the end there'd only be a scream. Kept cutting until she was only a tube of meat. There was no god here. Saw two junkies shooting up as I passed by on the train. The silver carriage was taking me back a different vein. Along the track, decayed walls screamed a raw peeled need. Shallow ghosts of agrarian crime tickled the soles of my feet. Malthus won at a crawl. The night stank.
8 million. Never known such folly. High above the city a peeling billboard proclaimed: 'These are the times. This is our golden age'

I'd disagree. Nothing is more real than nothing in this army. Every bolt shell that hits an Outsider sticks. Every wound and crater is relevant, is meaningfull. They go on despite that damage, until they can't go on any longer.

Maybe somewhat late reply, but anyway. Truth and facts (as I would express it) are always reflecting a point of view - something this army does not have, or have lost a long time ago. They are no longer what they once were, but existing only in the interference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interference_(physics)) of the memories of their existance and the void left from a thousand bolter holes.

But maybe I missunderstod you...

That might be what I'm trying to articulate. I'm once again getting to the point of the (currently) unammable.

I think it's closer to an absence not really an absence that's an absence.
The absence of a childhood playground when you return to it.
The space is waste ground, but it's not an absence. There are needles, stones. No birds.
The real absence is felt in your emotional response. You have an awareness of nothingness. There is a little death.

Like if a friend didn't turn up to a cafe. He wasn't there, but neither was George Washington. We as humans have a unique sense of nothingness.

Quote
But maybe I missunderstod you...
I haven't a notion where I'm going with the army either. It's a process. I'm advancing 6'' a turn into some vast psychic hinterland. I don't know if it's plasma guns or objectives in there. I'm leading a grey crusade into the soul.

Keep going, it's interesting stuff you're doing.

And you really should read Neuromancer and also Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. A novel which (I feel) really deals with the nothingness of one man's existence and the nothingness of a postapocalyptic world. But as you say, still from a human point of view. You might hate it, but then again, you might like it.

The crux of the Vacant idea. Slap corroded brass face plates on elongated plastic daemonettes. Some self-denying concept of beauty. Wasted strength.

The Recluses concept of working 'outside' - outside normal strictures found their ultimate expression in Chaos. They had moved one step further into anarchy. Eventually, the limitations of freedom began to assert themselves. Collective relationships, where everyone improvises and the dynamics are hidden, can be breeding grounds for covert tyranny. As the history of automatism shows, spontaneity attracts the inevitability for collapse into repetitious themes and behavioural tics, stasis and empty chatter.

Unless work is taken to the contrary, all living systems fall towards entropy. e can't afford to have an Outsider become self-aware. He's got total control, they are, literally at the end of it, objects in his plan. But without organisational deep change, they're all doomed. In making his decisions, e's committed too much to ever go back. The only way forwards is slow suicide. Neon tubes close to death, heart murmurs, mechanised guillotines snipping the heads off rows of toy soldiers, sheets of lead unfurling in empty underground car parks. He's alone in the void. Zuvassin is pleased.

Keep going, it's interesting stuff you're doing.

And you really should read Neuromancer and also Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. I read Oryx and Crake already! Thought it was very similar to something I had already done: a hideously bleak comic set at the end of what has become the human race. The setting was later re-used for the Nihil Rifles stuff. Just as an indicator, the rifles stuff is far, far more human.

I might have a battle next week with the Outsiders... watch this space.

Had my first battle with the Outsiders on Tuesday. Had a victorious slaughter versus another CSM player in the end at 500 points. I lost my fist AC (Oldstyle) to his fist PM AC. I killed everything else but for one AC who fled off the table, ending the game.

I lost 55, he lost 500.

List was:
DP with Wings

Squad 1:
10 CSM, 2 melta, AC with fist

Squad 2:
5 CSM,flamer, Rhino.

The DP ate a 5-man squad (bar that lucky AC who fled),Squad One received a 8 (?) PM charge, won the combat then ran them down. His lord went down quickly to bolter and flamer fire. His last 5 man squad was shredded with combined fire.

Maneuvering kept me out of rapid fire range and counter charge, let me get into rapid fire range and counter charge.

Rhino was quality, blocking LOS, taking fire.
DP was a dream, killing everything, soaking up plasma fire.
Big squad worked well. Lots of ubergrit, firepower.
Small one was very effective. Would give a plasma gun in future.

Thanks all. First Chaos game, first Chaos win.

Everyone loves the models. They love the fluff. Really enjoying the college game soc. Was up until 4AM last night playing Inquisitor, but with my 28mm Necromunda gang of Enforcers.

A few ideas have surfaced, mostly for more marines.

Candidate - Part of the infiltration party of Telluria IV, Candidate skinned the newly elected Planetary Governor and stapled the governor's face to his own. In a reverse possession, the candidate's psychic residue infiltrated the nervous system of the CSM. Seizing control, the marine's skin turned a rich coffee colour. He did a line of coke, then was elected leader of his squad despite his inexperience and lack of real substance. His promise of 'change' was fulfilled by a profound rift in his psyche. Candidate still lurks. He tends to kiss hands and shakebabies with his powerfist.

A smiling, bareheaded black marine extending a handshake from the front. Hidden behind is his powerfist, with whorled, grotesque screaming familial mouths covering the back of his armour.

The Soft Marine - He once extended a towering triumph of a bolter, recent melta and flamer washes have have destroyed his self-esteem. After his big gun went soft, nothing could ever be the same again. Modeled as marine with modified bolter. Expect fire to feature heavily in his conversion.

Loath - Dead.

Also came up with Iron Spawn, what I might use as an economical option for Oblits. Have one guy stretching a orifice in his chest for a load of guns to burst out (under his skin is stretched with barrels, call him 'Barrel Chest' or something), the other is covered in open human orifices ejecting guns. Lascannons out of his behind. Call him 'Arsenal'.

My Dark Heresy campaign is forming up for after Christmas, and I have a 1k battle versus the same guy next week.

Things are going very well.

(Telliria, I highly recommend Samuel Beckett's 'Malone Dies' and William Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch'. I took everything from these guys. Follow up with Beckett's 'The Unnameable' and Burroughs' 'The Soft Machine'.)

Noted. I feel ready to pick up some fun books after my exams are done this week and get into some christmas holiday reading.

Here are a few Outsiders painted to test out colour schemes:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP1010137.jpg&hash=e2dcf5d54b98e2a08deed6c91245dbedad115067)
I think this is really nice. Pre- Heresy.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP1010136.jpg&hash=b0922d87c8c63ee048381ac9342f300891902807)
Having said that, I think the blacklining here gives it real 'pop'. Attempt at orange 'static'

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP1010140.jpg&hash=6a876b3f8b6886157b6ef8cb2084a2889e91e61f)
One possible rendering of the warpfire/static. If anything, I would add more texture to the greenstuff.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP1010141.jpg&hash=72ec213cdea9980bc241b235d3d7ed6b2559b0f7)
What it won't look like. Added here because the other two models look more like they do in natural light. Really dirty, grungy.

Uh... these were painted by drunken consensus at 3AM after a club by myself and two others. So not that much detail added. Will have a real marine up for next post. Probably AAngle.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2Fhollow.jpg&hash=86f956053a29f7d236c32a494bf75e6a1df09954)
This is something I inspired a friend to do. I guess it's how Lesser Hollows will look when I get round to making them.

I can't words tonight. So I image'd.

ANgle#:
Like an Iron Maiden turned inside out. Speaks in static screams and the marine himself is a CCW.

Low detail painting, but it's quick and it works.

Bad baby:
Looks like a malformed infant. Enjoyed the idea of wasted strength/potential. Probably the 'worst' model I've made. Looking at it makes me feel ill. The baby arm on the right is wrong.

Scout Sergeant Oenenone - Along with Chaplain Pater Gregor, is the last surviving Recluse. A weatherbeaten wraith who stalks Interzone in a shabby grey djellaba. Portentously anonymous, his appearance means something big is about to go down in the City. His personality is defined by absence and negatives.

One of the originals, he's been there since before day one. Taught every Scout in the chapter the essentials.

Now alone in the City, he does everything he can to stay one step ahead of the Anonymous, e's invisible chosen.

Stands with Pater Gregor in the fall of Anomie.

Zemanová - Chapter Master.
He strove for moderation in all things.
Acted as a counterpoint to e's bestial behaviour.
Liked order and efficiency. His mother may have had an unusual occupation.

Now entombed in a Dreadnaught stolen from the Ultramarines by e, who, following the Heresy, forced a million million dead souls through him, washing away every atom of ego.

Had another battle with the Outsiders, again, 500 points. We played objectives, he was Blood Angels, I used the above list.

DP charged first turn as he was right forward (deployment was weird) and ate his 10 man Marine Squad. His commander then charged, the DP killed him and the remainder of the squad over two turns.

My ten man squad got onto an objective, the five man with plasma scuttled up in a Rhino, opened up on the Imperial marines trying to hold the objective. They fell back, I had parked the squad and rhino on the objective. Turns were up. I lost two marines, and a wound on the DP. He lost the commander, fifteen marines with various upgrades. I had two objectives, he had none.

A Paint marine had graffiti on him, I really liked the idea:

REMEMBER RIDICULE. Once, one time, younger sister ORAL towards endlessly reproducing stars  ...oh IS IT IN YET? Shot down. Wrong hole.

I know I can kill. KNIVES IN. beslubber 'forever'. I am I.

Useless. No birds. SHOOT ME I AM THE BAD GUY. Start again. Play pretend.

eeeeeee Miserable pile of secrets. It hurts. Don't pray. harder

..Aa..#u.,c.a,1.11,a....111a...ca..aa.11...1.a1111...1.

Don't tell CHANT CHANT CHANT CHANT. In the Pink snow, his hated friend certainly a mirror. ISN'T IT SAD- wanna touch wieners? THROBBING Need need need need all over him, save me, you all forgot, laughed at Dachau. I UNDERSTAND NOW.

RELIEF. BIG GUN. Held her down, RUINED. Not there, used used used.

FORGIVE FORGET RAPE requiem, mother I tried pleasebelieve me

HA HA HA... Why? Bought and sold. Spinning plates. Falling to pieces all over again.

Marines are beginning to roll of the production line. Might have one or two for the weekend (no camera in college). Wisdom teeth are coming through. Girlfriend has a dream: There were lots of us. We were hiding in a room with locks on the door but the locks combination was being cracked so we were attacked. There was a man with a chainsaw holding babies at arms length and sawing them in half. My friends and family were eating each other, convulsing on the ground, cutting each other into tiny pieces. There was lots of laughing. Chainsaw man carved the flesh off my legs. i couldn't escape.

Caseless:
Part of the Berserker horde absorbed decades ago. Totally emasculated by chem-gelding, he resolved to turn himself into a glistening pillar of muscle.

It was remarked that turquoise is under used. Sought to rectify that.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP3060166.jpg&hash=fc43c7ad2fc2496993d985f17286d37bf99ad5a8)

The Unnameable:
The end result of the Outsiders process. He is disembodied. The tears stream down his face unceasingly. Perhaps it is liquefied brain? Attacks with bolt of ennui.

The varnish running down from his eyes on to the plinth is quite subtle in natural light, inks of blue and purple give it an ethereal vibe. I worked so hard on making his cylinder look unplanned and diffuse.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2FP3060165.jpg&hash=54fdb19c11204df747f29a6ed0fdf7178d7bec43)

Another paint marine. The yellow needs a further thinned coat to make it functional.

What should I do with the bases? I like the pillar chap's grey base. The marines seem to blend into the background...

+

Army is pure materialism. Reproducing endlessly into the void without presence or potency.

'Pawn'- Koma was dead. He crouched, stirring the stillbirth with a stick.
Oldstyle raised his fist again, on which the blood would never dry. Caseless fire screamed civilians to stains.

Pawn, being ripped apart by plasma in a last stand:
No way out.
Thank god.

Why was he picked in the first place? What was two hundred years? Tedium. Given an arbitrary purpose, told to go on. Should resist. Cannot.

A fruitless tree. Babies boiled in bellies. Landscape of stake and ash. White maggot figures writhe in sunshine.

Three kids. Blanks.
Light fire under idiot, tied to post, nervous system burned out by psychic shock.
Spasms. They spark up the next one.

Photosensors dial up. Sun rise. Appalling vista.

Defy despair and say:
‘All is dust.
But not yet.’

+

Spinning ideas for an Outsiders story. Lost big sheet of stuff, still had some it. I felt it coming up like a tooth.
Your girlfriend has some pretty messed up dreams there... course, given what you're writing as inspiration for the Outsiders, it kind of fits... scary.

Vague Berzerker. Is self-aware, but is unable to communicate that self-awareness. Thus, rage.

The Stranger:
Started the whole thing looking for ‘insight’. Deluded, though he was happy. Now he’s like every other dead Marine saying LIFE IS GOOD BUSINESS AS USUAL.

But Pawn is different. He can’t say that he’s just a cheap heel, a predestined failure. For him there’s going to be no superhuman transcendence. It’s a slow, every day killing. In between fighting and digging holes, he’s just passing the time until he dies.

Oldstyle starts telling story about M31. Pawn remembers him on founding day as a loyalist Sarge. Nowadays, every aspiring champion, no matter what his colours were, was scared of Oldstyle. He scared Pawn amphetamine parrotless. Knows Oldstlye is deliberately living in a fantasy world. Babyhands was another sick beslubber. The children’s hands stapled to him never decayed. Like pressed flowers, he thought.

‘The Stranger?’
Oldstyle rumbled.
‘Dunno if he’s even alive. Can’t see any glowy amphetamine parrot on him. Maybe his mind is mashed. Maybe he got Hollow infestation.’

[Interjection from Inquisitor ==PURGED==]
The body will still be able to hold a conversation and react to stimulus exactly as you would have while alive, but would your world slowly become dimmer and dimmer until finally you felt like you were just a passenger in your own body going along for the ride, then an observer, and finally nothing?’

Scary amphetamine parrot.

And him? Missing arm that wasn’t missing. The inference, the hole whre the arm was in space, had become redefined by it’s absence. It hung, blue. A literal phantom limb. The warp was heavy on him now.

+

AAngle# was chained.
He spoke in a wash of code that no one could break with sanity intact. Sensing Pawn, he began the quasar hum. Pawn began strangling him. Spines erupted from AAngle#’s intangible flesh. His head opened like a rose petal.

Pawn stopped and grabbed the chain.
He began hauling him to the drop pod filled with similar berserk specimens. Oldstyle nodded, threw his last in, then smacked the door activation rune. Those inside fell silent.

+

What tedium.
Oldstyle’s quarter was filled with distorted dataslates, music wreathed in ambience and static. Pawn listened closer: percussion of beetles knocking in coffins, ovens cooling, irradiation of aether with aether. Neon tubes close to death, heart murmurs, mechanised guillotines snipping the heads off rows of toy soldiers, sheets of lead unfurling in empty underground car parks.

Oldstyle brought out his trophy rack and started reeling off names and dates from M32 onwards. Pawn continued browsing.

The dataslates were Imperial. That in itself wasn’t unusual. But it was all pop-culture stuff: TV, stories, songs, even hymnals. Stuff from home.
All of it had been cut up and rearranged into incomprehensibility .

‘After the Chapter defected, e swore he’d take Anomie down. Only the studded strap-on of a Scarusian space fleet stopped us. When we went back in M41, my 10th millennia, I couldn’t bear it. Too many memories.’

Pawn hadn’t noticed the knife in his neck. Oldstyle ripped it out, then grabbed him by the armoured collar and flung him into the wall. Pawn hit the bulkhead and bounced.

‘There wasn’t there anymore. So I did what I could and washed everything as bare as I was. Then I could see the PDF as targets. Then I could see the skinned kiddies as pieces of meat. Home-’

He composed himself.
‘-Anomie means amphetamine parrot to me.’
He socketed a power first.
‘You’ve made a tit of yourself.
So why don’t you beslubber off?’

Pawn scrabbled on the steel and ran out the door.

+

It was like he had done the worst of things for a laugh. The Emperor was dead. The Imperium was a joke. Humanity was an infected boil.

Nothing was sacred.
Nothing was profane.
Everything was permitted.

Oldstyle cared about not caring. He showed up all the errors and mistakes, he lived right out there without shoving anything up your soul.

If a mob or Ork Boyz swamped them, he’d follow him.
If a Carnifex barrelled through the Rhino, he’d follow him.
If beslubbering Marneus Calgar in terminator armour charged them, he’d follow him and then laugh about it afterwards.

Pawn had nothing better to do anyway.

+++

Seriously, that started from a character desciption... I'll be continuing that story.
Had a 750 point battle versus Guard this week:

Winged DP - 130

8 CSM, AC with power fist, melta - 170

8 CSM, AC with power weapon, melta - 160

8 CSM, AC with power weapon, flamer - 155

5 Anonymous Chosen with a melta. Infiltrate, then Destroy. Attack. Die. - 105

Rhino- 35

750

Wiped 750 of mixed armour and infantry Guard (minus a Sentinel) and took around 75 points of damage.
I captured his objective and he had nothing on mine.

Chosen worked very effectively in infiltrating and blowing up his Russ. They later charged and disrupted his infantry line long enough for the 8 man w/power fist squad in a Rhino and Demon Princess to attack.

I swapped theChosen's flamer for a melta after dropping the MoS.. but that did bugger all against the front of a Russ. So krak grenades it was! They come highly recommended and will be used in future lists.

DP didn't see a lot of action as it was against a gun line, it only consumed a mere platoon of 20 Guardsmen.

Squad in Rhino did great things. Rhino cut incoming fire when doing a drive-by, got them quickly and safely into his deployment zone.

Two footslogging squads: Both with power weapons to save points.
The first squad was charged by a Sentinel and was held up from turn 3 onwards. Lack of a power fist really hurt me here. Did good things in gunning down a Rough Rider assault.

Second squad held my objective, and rapid-fire'd, and charged 25 Guardsmen moving to my objective into dust.

Star players were the cogs in a Chaos hate machine, the Chosen. Infiltrate lets you punish the enemy for anything. Another win for the Outsiders!

AjkA61**7048#[...]:

Really, really nice paintjob here.
It makes me sick to look at it, which I always take as a good thing. Painted in my usual group post mid-night, where value judgements are skewed and 'awful' becomes a compliment.

May be beginning a Chaos WHFB army. Test model is tasty up close.

Following a dialogue, I realised these marines are my surrogate sons. This thread may be a test run for my future progeny. This thread has also acted as a agar plate of psychopathologies and states of mind. It's pornographic. It's also prompted some realisations about myself.
Painting things up, in tandem with advice and counsel, has made me wiser.

They invade a civilised world and break down the illusions fed by petty pleasures in life, like second-hand sex and your choice of movie at the local movie theater. The Leviathan keeps moving.

But suppose you stopped doing whatever it was you were doing. Let's suppose it was vital, like weapon construction during a war, or simply food production in a famine. If you're lucky, the government will just send someone to do your job for you, if you're unlucky, you'll be shot until someone gets the picture and goes back to work.

By our association with society, we are subject to it's whims. It's only because all of us find the idea so abhorrent that people aren't beaten and sent into coal mines or collective farms, but it's always possible that conditions will change and suddenly you won't have your precious rights. (From a legal perspective, it's natural law, that things 'ought' to be a certain way, that protects our rights from positive or government law.)

A cog can spin for its own enjoyment, but mechanics won't be happy.  Stand in your corner and push or we'll bury you and replace you with someone who will. They've got the swords, law doesn't mean a tap. Pompey knew that in 82BC, he looked at the people protesting and laughed.

WOW!..... just WOW!........ i saw this and was inspired, i think also by someone earlier in the post saying how they move like static......... and so, im gonna have to steal a small part of these ideas  :D (with you in consideration)..... i however am not gonna do all the flamboyant conversions (neither time nor moneys) and so am doing a regular chaos force (i have the codex) but....

.... i like the fluff of the interference, static, echoes that sorta thing....... and so im painting my chaos marines white, with grey, black and silver drybrush horizontal over the model (like white noise on the tv), i shall be using sonic weapons as i think this reflects the wierdness of them and also melta (metal disturbance), i had the idea that the marines 3+ save would not really reflect armour (as they are just echoes now) but they're ability to translocate, zip out of realtiy and generally give you a headache  ;), however once you DO hit them, they are unstable thoughts and will dissipitate to form again in the warp........... i have not painted any yet, but i will post pics and would love to get any feed-back on this idea,

A drybrush won't do that for you.

White base coat, yes. Experiment with marbling wet colours onto white base coat. Drybrushing just makes them look dusty. Focus on making it chaotic, otherwise it looks like garbage. If you do try to improvise, you'll fall down on empty chatter and nonsense. Actively plan each stroke, don't just go crazy on it.

This is kind of funny, you're setting out to do what I thought I'd do all those months ago. If you have played Metroid Prime II: Echoes, the Sonic Visor (allowing you to see sound) could be rich inspiration. Perhaps optical illusions such as this:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi149.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs56%2FCyborg_Jesus%2F1206180577022.png&hash=07a6d05220aba5afb8a5305618a410bd0fe5e97f)

Also, listen either to some good ambient stuff, good noise rock to get you to that place while painting.
If you're mining the right seam, I might borrow it back. :P  PM me a link to the thread or PM the pictures themselves.

(Also, I've lost the plot again, fluffwise. Concentrate.)

i like the idea fo optical illusions, im gonna have a look at some on the net and experiment on a model scale, thanks for the help on the note of drybrushing.....
I do have one old model, a chaos demon, painted with an optical illusion scheme, the guy i was playing couldnt focus on it for long as it gave hime a headache!... (now to do a whole army like that)............. :D

I've always thought a tzeentch/thousand sons army would look great with optical illusions painted on the marines and vehicles.  Super hard to do at the right scale, but that would be super trippy and fitting!

Obliterator... thing? Seriously, the glue got to me that day.

Large facial protrusion studded with rods and pillars. Bulbous 'sense organ' in left hand.
S2 organ in back provides power to the organism. Small daemonic creatures often accompany this species of Obliterator, possible Zuvassin vessel (cross ref: Nurgling). Strangely patterened spinal cord: jacks and terminals?

Whole entity seemed obese and fleshy, smell reminiscent of sweat and cheetos.

This is getting more whacked out every day... :)

I like the noise marine (?), but wouldn't it be neat to give him an axe guitar? Long and close range in one.

I feel it too. Just more... out there in concept.

It's progressed quite far from the original design brief. I'm more confident in it, having actually spent some time modelling and painting now. It's proven on the field in addition to that.

I still feel it has the same essential flavour, especially with two noise defilers and a noise vindicator on the way, and it's evolved rather than digressed meaninglessly. Sure, I dropped the theme of entropy, but I prefer the idea of chaos destroying chaos destroying chaos destroying chaos destroying chaos (destroying chaos). That statement has a entropy of its own.

That perpetual motion and indestructability still leads to diminishing returns; that, against impossible odds in your favour, you can still beslubber yourself up, for me, that's what Chaos as an ideology represents. "This is how I call a victory".

I don't feel too strongly about 'spikey marines'. For me, Chaos should have a more warped flavour.  I'm really happy people enjoy this thread. Tabletop, my other gamers have the same response. A little psychosis and perversion of norms does you good.  Another Ballardian theme, Telliria ;)

Yes. I'll do that. This is why I post here. I'm down to a far-off mate's gaff next week, he's got a pile of bits I can bargain for. Chief amongst them will be shaved beastmen arms and WoC bitz. Also on the way are Bloodletters for Hollows.

Definitely.
An idea: You can see the glass falling from a table to shatter on the floor every day, but not the opposite i.e. the shards of glass merging to form something and bounce up to stand on the table. Why? The concept of entropy says this is astronomically unlikely - that doesn't mean it doesn't happen though...

The game I planned last year has come to fruition. They're working for the Ordo Sicarius, and took two weeks (six hours) to finish the 'Purge the Station's attackers- oh god, base's still alive- what do mean, we're being taken prisoners for murder?- Mysterious mindwiped stromtrooper who laughs a bit much? - Assassin PC in the vents breaks them out - kill the Commander and Astropath as they try to escape - get the original emergency message - Hollow-infested Stormtrooper manifests- fail to kill it and lock it in with the rest of the base's survivors. Then escape and an upcoming debrief. It was such a magnificent cock-up. Even my plans went to pieces.
The result was entertaining.

They got suitably freaked out by the daemon of Zuvassin, but none of them got possessed. I have to justify residual infestation for at least one of them. If I can't, I'll get them later.

I'm currently trying to think of a way of representing a Daemon slowly encroaching on someone's conciousness, cell-by-cell, in DH. How could I show, in terms of character stats and game effects, that the player is becoming a passenger in themselves and then finally nothing as they are totally infiltrated? The possessed further spreads the infection until they're triggered by some kind of signal. They either suicide bomb like a Heaven's Smile from killer7 or become fully fledged lesser daemons.

Notes of various kinds to disrupt and unsettle, blackouts, appearance changes, corruption and insanity points accruing... I have a bunch of ideas I've cogged or come up with.

First session on the planet of Anomie, get into Freelandia's mental institution. An NPC Doctor will spool the Hollow Corruption tex out when you visit, having described everything else in similar terms. He'll later be the one hypnotizing the Cleric into thinking he's about to achieve hypostatic union with the Emperor's guiding light before steering a fluorescent tube up his ass, then torturing the school shooter assassin by replaying his most humiliating statements in psychoanalysis under huge doses of LSD-25. Flavour text:

This triggers the Cleric, who interrogated another 'Cleric' in the base (actually an Inquistorial Agent here to spy on the Hollow Stormtrooper), to remember who the false Cleric worked for: Interzone Inc. Who runs this institution? Interzone Inc. Who else was in the cells with them? Headcases. Might be too strong a lead on- I don't want them to twig the central deceit too soon. The whole operation will turn out to be infested with the same daemons, and the assassin-Inquisitor they're working for will be aligned to the god of chaos destroying Chaos destroying chaos (destroying Chaos). Then it starts to get fun...

I can't let them know too soon. Once Interzone goes down, and all the Inquisitors attached and funding it, the Planet is on very shaky ground. Roll a d10, see how long it lasts...

Dark Heresy campaign image. They just finished the first mission for their assassin-inquisitor. He's the one pulling all the strings, but who's plucking his? The puppets in his right hand are the four assassin schools.

wow you definately have a realy great imagination and your ideas are complicated in a good way, your attention to detail in your background and marines is perculiar but very impresive ;D and its always encouraging to see someone who is dedicated to their own ideas. Its been a real pleasure getting a glimpse of your work ;D

Thanks, it's been a blast so far.
A pretty lazy one, mind you. It's taken me close to two years to paint about seven models.
I'm getting my modelling skills aligned with what I've got in my mind. I'd like to turn my motivation inwards for a while, see what comes out of the next few weeks.

I mean, I have everything I need. Change initiative:unfreezing, movement to desired state, freezing. Apply what I learned while I neglected what I'm now applying what I learned to.
