Ah, this would be about nine or ten years ago now, so my memory is a little fuzzy. I believe it was some other kids bringing their models to school to show off that got my brother and I interested. Our mum obligingly bought us the Warhammer Fantasy starter box along with the rulebook (this was in the dark days before pocket rulebooks, for you newer folks), I took the Empire and my brother took the Orcs. Sadly, time has moved on since then and my brother doesn't play any more.

April 1988
White Dwarf issue 100 was on display in the local news agent and I bought it, not really knowing what was going to be inside.
My first purchase was the Eldar Spirit Walker dreadnought, as it was then called, which was showcased along with the original rules for the Eldar D-cannon.
I've been playing or collecting (or taking a break from playing and collecting), ever since.

about 6 years ago :o I was in America when my flight home was delayed for a couple of hours. We went into the Mall (in the airport! Who puts a fully functioning shopping mall in an Airport?!?!) while wandering, we came across the local Games Workshop (In an AIRPORT!!!) and the Battle For Macragge. I loved it but my little bro. didnt so it was about a year untill i started playing (and collecting) at my school club after a mate showed me his Tau. My first purchase was a box of Khorne Berzerkers and a box of Chaos space marines =)
WFB came about 3 years after when we went into Warhammer World in nottingham for the first time. I walked out with the High Elf Battleforce and my Brother had the Orcs and Goblins one, Sadly he dosent play anymore as it is 'too geeky' for him but oh well. He gave me all his stuff for free =D

My first experience of warhammer was about 5 years ago when I first started college.  It was the 2nd week the freshman were in the dorms and a guy was going around asking people if they played warhammer 40k, well since no one on our floor did he made the offer that he would teach people how to play just bring what you find to represent models and we could play.  So I borrowed salt shakers, chess pieces and I was able to find a G.I. Joe action figure.  After I played a few games with my poorly proxied army I was ready to start playing but I would not buy the AoBR till a few years later after I got my first paid internship.

I started with Fighting Fantasy books, progressed to the Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG, advanced to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, picked up the Realms Of Chaos: Slaves To Darkness expansion which also covert WFB and 40K and then went and bought Rogue Trader under the mistaken idea it was WFRP in a sci-fi universe.

A few games were played with the paper cut outs in the back of the RT book and soon after that I picked up a couple of RTB-01 box sets.

I started playing with a friend of mine from school who used to do basic (red box) D&D with me. His dad came home from London one day with a bunch of miniatures in ziplock bags (which is how they were sold back in the day) and we worked out our own rules for them. After a while we became aware that there were real rules so we bought the newly released 2nd ed Warhammer Fantasy battles between the two of us. The first thing I can remember buying for myself was the RR4 set Mengil Manhide's regiment of renown, in fact I bought two sets at once because I wanted the veteran and the standard bearer and you only got one command figure per pack..

I remember waaaaay back in '98 i was flipping through the CCG magazine InQuest and i saw an article on Epic 40,000 and i stared at the pictures of tiny Imperial Fist tanks and drooled over them after i read the article over and over. If i recall the first thing i bought was the Epic 40k starter box, but i had so much Epic stuff its hard to remember.

Fast forward a few years to when i was in college and i went with a friend to a CCG store that carried 40k and i picked up the CSM Land Raider and knew it must be mine. I still have and use that LR.

Well, my 'first' experience with 40k was many years ago, my cousin showed me his army (marines, I believe) and explained the game, I was interested, but had neither the time nor money to pursue it. Fast forward to the release of Dawn of War, I pick it up and think "Hey, this looks familiar..." after playing that for long enough, it was really only a matter of time before I picked up the Guard codex. I've been collecting and painting ever since.

Heroquest was the inspiration for getting me interested in gaming in general, but it was the combination of White Dwarf 127 and the original Fire Dragon Exarch model, which made me want to play Warhammer 40,000.  Warhammer 40K was, therefore, my first table top game, and I've been playing it, and the Eldar, since 1990.

It'll be dead on 4 years in a couple of days. How time flies.

My brother did it back when I was 6, when Dark Eldar first rolled around I believe. Of course I thought it was cool as hell, but never bought them because it was too hard etc. The Furioso Dread stuck in my head for years on merit of being a massive robot with claws, and when I was 14 and finally bored of action figures and suchlike I wandered in to GW to see how things were. Bought a Marine Captain and started Blood Angels 2 days later.

I started when I moved to the UK, coming up on... 9 years now I think. I'd only been here about a month, and the couple of friends I had made at that point were interested, so we all waded in at once. One of them went Tyranids, one Eldar, and I went Tau. Sadly, the Eldar player stopped not that long after. But the Tyranid player and I are still semi-regular opponents.

As for my first purchase, it was a box of Fire Warriors, and an Ethereal. Those guys have all been in every game I have played with my Tau for all those years. First as a normal Fire Warrior team and an Ethereal, and now as his Honour Guard.

I started sometime around the 6th grade, when Warhammer 40k 2nd edition was all the rage; I had a friend who played because his older brother did. I started off with a squad of Marines, then some Fire Dragons, then I bought an Eldar army of a friend and played them since 2nd edition. My Eldar army looks funky with the old Rogue trader era stuff mixed in with everything between then and now.

my buddy played Space marines and kept telling me about them. About that time another buddy of mine was starting IG. Eventually they sucked me in around mid 4th edition and got me hooked. I started out on tau with a just a fire warrior squad. Got a battle force for Christmas and away i went. Never really won a against my friends Black templars but alais, i stuck at it.  Good times when the old tau gun line use to work  :'(

I don't remember the first time I heard about Warhammer & 40K, but I do remember in high school a friend that brought a CSM bike he recently bought, and although I was interested, I found it too expensive. It is also at around that same period that DoW was released, and little by little I wanted to play the tabletop game. Now about a year and a half ago, I started Dark Eldar. I only play occasionally but I do enjoy it :)

Back in the late 90s one of my mates brought some little toy soldiers to school and got a load of us into it. When we went into Games Workshop I saw this massive thing called a Screamer Killer and thought it looked pretty sweet. And the rest is history.

EDIT: Now I come to think about it I think it was abuot 95 or 96 by now. I started EARLY

*cough* When Rogue Trader came out. 1987, was when I first heard about it all and got interested. I didn't really have any money in those days though, so I didn't really get into the whole thing in a more collecting way until 2nd edition came out. I also played Space Marine a lot too. I loved that game.

1999, my brother brought home some space marines we spilt the boxset and I got Dark Eldar! It was a great army back in the day but after a bit I started collecting White Scars which I regard as my true army! (Even when they're on break!)

Doesn't really count as starting playing but I did first encounter 40K when my friend showed me a handful of marines in the early ninties, we even played a brief game using some rules we made up pretty much on the spot using some airfix tanks and artillery pieces as heavy support.... we had to make up a ruleset because my friend didn't know the rules for second edition 40K as they where heinously complicated. :D

First GW game I got into was Battle Masters about 20 years ago. Then when I moved into Secondary school I met new people who were playing Rogue Trader, so figure I'd join in!
The first things I bought was the metal Blood Angel Tactical box, some smelly primer and blood angels red!

My brother got me started early with GW games.  We started with things like BattleMaster, Talismen, Blood Bowl, etc.  '99 roles around and my brother brings home the 40k box set that he split with his friend.  He kept the 3rd ed rule book and the marines (painted them Dark angels) and his friend took the Dark Eldar.  I swear I read that rule book cover to cover more than a dozen times.  I loved the look of the eldar so that summer when I had a bit of cash I went out and bought the battalion box that came with 20 guardians, 3 jet bikes, a vyper, and falcon.

Our first game was a lot of proxies... couple guardians stood in for rangers, a model from the game Mutant Chronicles was my Avatar...

Funny thing is, it's been 11 years and I haven't looked back, but my brother ditched war gaming entirely by 2002

This thread comes up quite frequently, so instead of having multiples of the same thing, I am just going to sticky this one.

I was in primary school, year 5 or 6. I went shopping for LEGO with mum and whilst having a look I had the urge to turn around. There it was, Warhammer in all it's boxed glory! Not knowing anything, I got the old cardboard Imperial Battle Bunker, and some Empire Army halberdiers. Mum mail ordered me a paint set and they sent me a white dwarf (210 I think), warhammer monthly and some other neat things along with it. My collection was just random models I liked for ages. I was so happy, I still get that buzz when I buy something new.

When i had been in High School for a year My Friend was very into lord of the rings and we went to town one day to try it out, he cracked on and i got a starter game, which i loved. I bought Moria and Played a lot of LOTR building a 2500pt Gondorian Force. After a while, the guys i used to pay with Fell out of the game (one got banned ffrom the shop for stealing from a starter table) so i had no-one to play with, so i sort of got forced into playing a new game by the shop. So i've been playing 40K for about 3 years now.

The first 40k thing i bought was a Space Marine Combat Squad, which i still have in my Army

I started playing about 2 years ago. I got interested when me and my friend were stuck at our sister's dance classes. He told me all about the game of 40k, and the armies. Long story short, saved up a hundred bucks, bought the battle for macragge set, got free lessons, paint, and a case. I've been playing ever since.

A schoolfriend who played Epic showed me a catalogue and explained the various factions, describing Eldar as 'Arrogant space-elves, who see warfare as an art form'. Sold. First purchase, WD219 and (somewhat illogically) the spanking new Falcon Grav-tank. Soon after, I got the Eldar codex, only for 3rd edition to come out within months. I felt pretty ripped off, but it has since become my go-to source as far and away the most comprehensive volume in terms of Eldar fluff (with the probable exception of the infamous WD127).

For me it was mid high school when some friends of mine were actively playing on the weekend, i was broke and had no job but found it all very interesting.  One of my friends let me sit down and paint a tyranid unit he had bought for other people to play with and i spent like 6 hours painting it with a toothpick because i couldnt get the detail i wanted with a paint brush yet.  Eventually i got a job and saved up to buy my first units which were a box of khorne berserkers, a box of chaos space marines, and a night lord hero model to be an act as chaos lord.  I also bought some paints and a few brushes and went to town.  Its been a couple years since i first got interested.

Twas the year twenty oh four (?) , and my housemate brought a WD back from work with him . Can't remember the issue , was the one with the SOB on the cover ...

Gave it a quick read , it of course made beslubber all sense , but the artwork appealed to me . On a mutual off day we headed off to GW to give it a proper look . After a particularly painfull intro explanation from a employee ( in real life Marines have 2 hearts , and in real life they are 8 feet tall etc . And here was me thinking they were little plastic models  :o ) and an even worse intro game ( my 20 Dark Eldar warriors with 2 Splinter Cannons vs 10 Tac Marines and a Land Speeder ) I was hooked .

Back home a thourough browse of GW's website made me realise 1 thing . The only thing more kick ass than the Terminator is an army of Terminators led by Death ! So , 1 Necron Battleforce , Lord and Codex was acquired and the rest is history . Including my Necrons . Kids , never sell an army , one day you may want to play them again .

Basically, my brother bought the starter set with the rule book, and gave me the army he didnt want (which was Dark eldar), and was hooked for awhile, but dropped out early in 4th (though I've been playing fantasy skaven from about the same time till now).
What brought me back again was looking at all of the new models DE were getting (add another for the bandwagon).

Played a game of his own divising which he assured me where the rules (such as 3 wounds apeice for his guys, grenades with large blast etc.) So that year I got the Tau starter kit of a massive 4 fire warriors for 24$ and my parents saying "Yeah, I bet this will end up on the floor forgotten in a weeks time"............riiiigh t. I can still pick those 4 warriors out.

Seeing the Eldar miniatures are what first drew me into the hobby.  I loved their armor's organic look and the cool, futuristic weapons.

I also love building plastic model kits.  I started when I was about 12 years old.  I'm 42 now and still like to build them.

I have loved table top wargames since 10th Grade in high school.  I took Military History that year and we had to play those old style games as part of our grade.  Does anyone remember the old West End Games historical wargames with the cardboard squares to represent the regiments?  We played the American Civil War series.  I played as the Confederacy and won Shiloh, Chickamauga, Vicksburg, Fredricksburg and Gettysburg and I fought Antietam to a stalemate.

I'm also an amateur writer and hope to become a professional author when I retire.  I LOVE the whole idea of creating your own fluff and backgrounds for your army.

Like I stated above, my first love was Eldar, but now I've been converted to Chaos and am starting a Red Corsairs army.  I decided Renegade Marines were more my playing style than Eldar.  Maybe having worked in law enforcement for 22 years dealing with criminals has warped me, I don't know.  I just know I realy love playing as the reavers of the Maelstrom.  I visualize my bad boys being quite the trophy takers.  I used to be quite the hunter when I was younger.  Maybe that has a bit to do with me choosing Huron and the boys.

I just love the whole aspect of the hobby!

My eldest son got a game box with SM and DE back in 2001 for his tenth birthday.
He got the good guys I got the bad evil dudes. Now I have about 3000 pts of them.

The space marines kept shooting them to pieces as they ran across the carpet formed planet.
Then I found speed in the form of jet bikes.

A guy from the local GW store invited me to play with his mates.
I won a game. Fell over the line in a game with quarters - what was that called.

Now I love creating conversions. My DE are looters they loot anything - even a Pod racer and a klingon bird of prey.
Unfortunatly my painting is bad and my army became the Kabal of overdone graphics.

Now I am looking forward to converting the new models.

just before the turn of the millenium somebody decided to buy me a space marine command starter set and that was where it all began. As i was only 7 at the time i had no idea what i wanted so people kept buying me random stuff. A tactical squad and bike for marines, a bunch of skeletons with a chariot, a giant, some knights, a few necrons, a hive tyrant and even a few IG tanks and ork bods. The one thing that stuck though was my dark eldar. Even with all of the models i had i thought they looked the most awesomest. Then i found out about a magical thing called a "codex". wierd i know but when i began reading about them i became utterly hooked. Long story short, 9 years later i decided that the constant humiliating defearts resulting from me not being very good with my dark eldar caused me to change to fantasy. Guess what army? that's right dark elves. Then i went on and bought my friends mordor orcs and suddenly decided tyranids would be fun. Now i'm sitting here drooling over the very idea of more dark eldar and looking guiltily at those models i've had for the past 11 years that i can still pick out from my army. My christmas list will be big indeed this year.

I started back in 8th grade, so around 2003?  My friend showed me the GW site, and gave me a couple of novels.  I was enthralled in the setting, and then began looking into the hobby.

My first army was Necrons, and I earned a lot of awards with them, I still remember when I brought Flayed Ones to a tourny, and they actually rocked the house.  Got Best Army from that event, but eventually I moved onto Chaos, as well as dabbled in other armies.  Though a bit over a year ago, someone stole my Necron army.  Yup, my first army was stolen years down the road.

Though I think I'll be able to trade the leftover bugs from my newest army project for some new Necrons, and then with the new codex out in the next fifteen years, I'll make a return.

A friend of mime, and 40k Orks player, brough me along to see a couples of his games and tough me how to assemble and paint the miniatures. I realy liked the game and so I decide to start my own army. Yeah ... but witch army ?? I jumped from army to army on the GW website, checking the various models and after a couple of day I got my answere: Eldar!
I'll admin that I choose them only for the models themself, I known very little about thery background at the time.

The next step was to buy the Assault on Black Reach set, for the rulebook/templates and to start to practice on the models, and the Eldar codex.  A month or so after that I bought my first Eldar models.

I was at sea 6 years ago ish in the canadian Navy, and a fellow 40KO member introduced me to it durring the trip. Started with Marines, and now expanded into Eldar. What interested me the most was the modeling. As the trip was a long one I had time with an experienced gamer/modeler to provide plenty of help and tutoring to avoid feeling over whelmed, lost and inadequet.

I think it was about 6 years before that I had attempted a Bretonian Army only to fail miserably due to lack of knowledge, and lack of comrades that shared the interest to maintain a growing experience with it. The remaining Brets I have are now miniscule bits and pieces that I have salvaged before disposal.

Hindsight is 20/20 though. I could have salvaged more, had I waited just a little longer... LOL Ah well.

I started about 4 years ago when my friends needed a 4th to play a 2v2 game so I bought some chaos marines. Then I was reading my friend's copy of the hand book and said "Woah why didn't you tell me about dark eldar" and he said they were really tough to play. I didn't care I liked their fluff too much and decided to go for it. Played a few games (Won the 2v2 Necrons and DE vs CW Eldar and IG), then had to sell my army for college things. Now that I have money again I will be getting new DEs next week... I'm excited.

Hi,
Just got hooked the other day actually. Was at a friends house and he had it all set up in his basement. I asked "Whats the story with this game...?"

After about 6 hours of play, I'm now here on the forums and am looking forward to building an army over the coming weeks.

I've chosen the new Dark Eldars. My friend had like 2K collections of Eldars, Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Blood Angels. Think I'll stick to 1 at this point  :)

Hmm, when was it? Sometime during the 90s (woo accurate, only had 3 decades of my existence to pick from) my elder brother came home from his mates place with exciting stories about a game of gorkamorka they'd played. He eventually purchased the guys old school orks, buggies, etc, and passed these on to me when he learnt about 40k and the most stabby looking race in the universe, Dark Eldar.

I tried convincing a few friends to start up the hobby too, saying "its like chess with guns", but with little effect.

I kept the vehicles when I built up a 2000pt army, but mulched the boyz into bitz when time came to buy the shiny new orks in a pretty hefty box set. Some bikes and truks and great orkzes to build and paint. I loved orks cuz they look so ragtag and bad@ss, and you can throw in non-GW bits with your conversions without it looking out of place. Suffice to say my killer kan used to house baked beans.

Unfortunately I left home and the boyz went into storage with his DE and some marines that were a recent purchase. Said storage building has since collapsed in a fire to coincide murfectly with the rekindling of my interest in the hobby. Can they be salvaged and save me hundreds of aussie redback in start-up costs?

We'll see ^_^

Ouch, that's gotta suck. I think I'd cry if any of my army was damaged.

I started when I was in about 5th grade, my friends were starting it and I fought against it, I didn't really care for it, and wasn't interested in it at all, despite their attempts to get me into it. However, I went over to my friend's house one day and they had models set up, suddenly interested my friend put me through a tutorial, to give me a taste, and I loved it! I've played for the past 4-5 years on and off (I'm 14 going on 15), really getting into it now that I'm old enough to really understand it all, and I've made some new friends who play it. I've also tried to get many friends into it, but not many are interested, some were but then quit (but hey that wasn't a total loss, I can't say no to a free land raider).

What first got me into Warhammer 40k was the RTS for it. My friend has Dark Crusade, and was passing it around for everyone to install it so that we could play LAN. I played that for a long time, and got really into the Tau. Soon after, I discovered that it was a tabletop game, and started by almost emptying the 'used model' cabinet of my local gaming store of all things Tau (luckily for my wallet, it was only about 3 Crisis Suits and 24 Fire Warriors). Two years, a battleforce, some random models and a forgeworld purchase later, I am where I am now, with a terrible win-loss record, but a ton of great stories.

Oh, ive been into 40k for about 5 years now. I started with dawn of war, not knowing there was an entire story behind it, as well as a whole miniature range. I started with the necrons, then chaos, then space wolves, then guard, then came fantasy with skaven and dark elves. Finally, ive settled on Dark Eldar as my one and only 40k army. For those 5 years I could never find anyone to play the game with me. I tried to get my friends into it but they never seemed to care. Thankfully a hobby store a few miles away and I try to visit as often as possible, which usually means the weekends.

I started my love affair in early 2001, when my band class took a school trip to the Grapevine Mills mall, and I visted the Games Workshop, not knowing what the hell it was, just that the tables they had set up looked AWESOME! I harbored my wanting of plastic space men for years, until in 2006 our game store Realms of War (RIP) had opened and a friend invited me over for a game of yu-gi-oh (I know, how sad I was a dweeb). I saw people playing 40K in the corner, and was reminded of the models I had seen. That next week, I spent my ENTIRE paycheck on some Necrons, then bought some Imperial Guard, the Dark Eldar, then Eldar, then back to Imperial Guard, then to Space Marines, then to Tyranids, so on and so forth. The orks I recently started have been a constant love affair, but i have been scared to start them. Now I am going full in, and working on some Fantasy Warriors of Chaos.

If anyone has any pointers for WoC, please let me know, I would love to hear 'em.

I started the hobby in 2009, early August. A friend mentioned it to me so I thought I'd take a look. Originally, as a casual Tolkien fan I collected LOTR for the strategy game but quickly realised how popular 40k was and how unpopular LOTR was. :( I was looking at the various 40k armies and the Eldar just seemed to jump out at me. Christmas came and went and in the new year I found myself looking at the humble beginnings of an Alaitoc force...

1994, I remember I was in Chelmsford visiting my Aunt and we came across a Gamesworkshop. Went in and were given two armys (brother also played) from the display cabnet to play with the store manager.

Ultramarines vs Eldar as far as I remember. Anyway didnt have a clue but it was fun and next birthday that came a 2nd edition of 40k was baught.

The first army I collected.... Blood Angels, still remember going to "The Model" shop on Capel Street (Dublin) and buying lightning & Thunder claw terminators for £2.00 (old Punts) as GW hadnt a shop in Ireland yet.

Well i had been out of gaming for a while because of moving out to the middle of nowhere, Move closer to a town that had a gaming store and went in to play some BattleTech only to find that nobody played anymore and everyone played the evil Warhammer 40k.

After watching for a while and being in a much better financial position to buy the stuff ( when i was younger who the hell would pay that much for little plastic men. ) i picked up the Space Marine battle force and it all grew from there.

I got into Warhammer 40k about 2 or 3 years ago. A friend of mine who played Necrons and read the novels let me borrow his Space Wolf Omnibus to read since I was out of books to read. It was my first Warhammer novel. So the Space Marines and the Wolves will always be favorite. I am just now recently getting into the table top game and am trying to purchase some Space Wolves.

Not a newbie, but I never did post anything in here, so it's about time I did. :-\ Well, I was introduced to 40k by the video game Dawn of War. I saw some of the models, looked on Wikipedia for some background, went to the GW website, and over the course of about a year or two I was actually buying the models. My very first model I bought was the Land Raider, because I loved the model and the way it worked in the game.

I believe I started around '88 or '89.  I used to play D&D with my brother and cousins, and that led us to local hobby stores.  One time in the mall game store, I saw the White Dwarf mags sitting on the rack.  Flipping through them, I fell in love with their range of minis, and quickly bought issues 98, 99, and 100 (not on the same day, but close to it.)  Although originally we got the magazines for the fantasy models, we ended up all getting into space marines and pretty much each got the original box of 30 plastic space marines and my older cousin got the rogue trader rule book.  We stuck with the hobby until some time into 2nd edition.  I went through several armies but ended up loving the Eldar above the others and sold or traded off most of my other stuff.  Somewhere along the lines we all trailed off of the game for some reason or another.  (High school, probably...)

Fast forward to several months ago - my brother and I were talking and WH40K came up.  Before we realized it, we fell in love with the idea of playing again and ordered the AoBR box set, an Eldar battle force, an Ork battle force, and a few other bits here and there.  The past couple of months we've been finding parts of our old armies that were lost in storage, and it's like finding long lost treasures.  And now here we are again (and now we can actually properly afford to play.)

About halfway through last year I started. I'd collected the lord of the rings strategy battle game magazines for 2 years before that in 05 I think? After that I went onto the games workshop website, looked at all the 40k stuff and thinking 'Wow, that's cool.' Only last year I bought my first box of Cadian troopers, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A friend at school was reading in a WHF 5th rulebook, a couple of weeks later I started collecting Dwarfs.  ;D

I started playing WH Fantasy (Dwarfs) in 1999-2000 I think?

I started playing 40k as well since 2004, going with Space Wolves.

And even before my Dwarfs, I already played Heroquest (somewhere since 1996 I think, first footsteps into GW).

I went over to one of my friend's houses to check out his new guitar set-up (Including a Gibson SG, I've moved onto Hagstrom Guitars, but that's another story...) and I noticed he had some little painted figurines. He is an amazing artist(those Eldar helped him get into the art school he wanted to go to) and despite the fact that I can't read my own writing , let alone paint, I was interested.

We happened to be heading into the city the next day and I picked up a Necron Battle force at GW. I wanted something that was competitive and was easy to paint so since he didn't know how badly Necrons got hit in 5th, I took his advice. We played a couple of games and then he left for school.

That was Dec 2008.

I've just recently gotten into actual 40k though(Nov,2010), and have dropped the Necrons for the models I fell for for. I'm probably going to have a lot of poorly painted Eldar, but I'll hopefully get better in time.

My first interaction with anything was when I was just in highschool and it was an offer for a free white dwarf magazine ad in dragon magazine issue 100. I filled out the form and got the magazine it was filled with conversions and this new game nobody in my home town heard of and a record! Sabbat doing Blood for the Blood God now I was into heavy metal at the time and saw this as the heavens smiling on menbut nobody wanted to try it, they were into D&D but oh well. It wasn't until I was a sergeant in the army, some 5 years later, that I made my first GW purchase and it was blood bowl and loved it! Some 4 years later I got out of the military and moved to a new state knowing no one I ran across this little comic shop with about 20 people in there playing games around tables thinking to myself "can't be blood bowl" I wandered up to see and low and behold a blood bowl game and some skirmish games going on that I remembered from that magazine from high school! I bought the second edition game and the space wolf codex that day a month later dark millium came out and swooped up on it as well and haven't looked back since

A preview of Dawn of War in a PC Gamer magazine back in '04, I immediately fell in love with the 40k universe. (GW's website address was included in the article, thus leading me to discover that 40k was a tabletop wargame)

My first puchases were Codex: Necrons, two boxes of Necron Warriors, and a Necron Lord.

My gaming friends had been trying to get me into WH40K since 1995.

I bought my 1st figures in 2002 (a starter box w/ SM and DE) but never completed or played with them.  Mostly because I had just moved and didn't have anyone to play where I had moved.

During the next few years, I would go crazy and buy an army.  It would sit around for a year (unopened) and then I'd trade it for another army.  And so on.....

Finally, about 4 years ago, a group of Warhammer fantasy and WH40K players converged on my local gaming store.  I ended up purchasing a CSM assault force and started playing.

Well back in 2003 me and a couple friends were a big group of nerds (we still are, but thats besides the point). One of them had collected space marines for a  few years, and was really excited and interested in the whole thing. We decided to try it out, and so we began a small gaming group consisting of: necrons, IG, space marines, tau, and eldar (me).

Most have them have quit since then. I was hooked.

Way back when Hero quest first came out. That was the first time I ever saw a game with actual models and it just blew my mind. Got into space crusade and then a few years later got the 40k 2nd edition box set (the one with cardboard dreadnought for orks). I started with an ultramarines army from then as most people were either blood angels space wolves or dark angels. (this was before all the ultramarine love). I then saw the Avatar model and thought whoa thats for me. I even remember buying it at games day in Birmingham and then spending hours painting it. Ah those were the days.
I can even vaguely remember some weird wolf gaurd genestealer movie they did. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Stopped playing when I hit about 17 and then got back in at the end of 4th edition and found I liked most of the changes. (still not keen on scatter mind, but thats another story).

I first bought 3 white dwarf magazines in about 1989. The first one had an ork pirate on the cover, the second had a dark future mad max thing going on. I have not owned these for years but i remember them perfectly. I had no idea about how to play the games but i loved the models and the artwork. I didnt buy any more for a year or more, and then i made friends with a guy that loved blood bowl. The first model i painted was a chaos blood bowl figure holding a chainsaw, after this i was hooked. I went on to buy a rather large dwarf army, the local toy store would sell 4 dwarf models for a pound fifty. It is nice to remeber the hobby in this way before it became so very expensive, and less chaotic.

A friend brought in a Warhammer Fantasy rulebook, and then 40k. My friends and I then decided to start a different army each a month or so before 4th Ed 40k came out. After backing in and out of the idea, I ended up playing Tyranids, and its been love ever since. For me it was the 3rd Ed Hive Tyrant and the whole, "Alien" look (in the Tyrant anyway) coupled with the great background.

First buys were the Gaunt box set and Warriors, and an innocent ignorence of what they could actually have...

I began playing Warhammer 40K about 12 years ago (I think it was in the 2nd Edition). I have given up and come back to the game many times. I mostly left it because I never found a "perfect" color scheme to me. It really sounds stupid but that's the truth. However I never stoped buying more and more 'nids while I tested lots of different color schemes, and although I've lost many of them throught the years, I still have a lot of them. Now, I'm back again to the game and I found my "perfect" color scheme, however, I'm considering about moving to other army, more exactly, to an Space Marine Army  :P

Time to change? Maybe.

I just got into warhammer 40k a couple months ago after moving away for a couple years and then moving back i found that all my friends were into it and they all had different armies, one has orks, another chaos space marines, another has greyknights and necrons, his girlfriend has dark eldar, another has eldar, the most experienced one has ultra marines and tyranids, and one of their friends has tau. so after seeing their armies and all the work they put into them i became fascinated by the game, not knowing which army to pick it was suggested that i get Imperial guard because no one in our group had them (aside from the greyknights who used stormtroopers) and after looking into them i fell in love with the idea. so i bought the codex and have been educating myself on the rules of the game ever since. i haven't even bought my first models yet. i have high aspirations for this army and i realize their potential despite all the talk about them being puny humies and how lasguns are just flashlights, i have faith that they will pull off great feats of heroism from time to time, just using the stormtroopers i have taken down a trygon in a kill team game, assaulted and killed the death leaper, and defeated the thousand sons without losing a single model. if anyone has any tips or strategies for me they would greatly appreciated.

A long while back in 4th ed fantasy, I saw my friend have a small skirmish on the path outside his house. It was his birthday and someone was showing them the game. Of course, we were all young. Birthday boy got a unit of black orcs and the other guy had a bloothirster (proxied by a juggernaut). Guess who won...

After that I picked up some undead, back in the days where vampires and tomb kings were in their proper places and necromancers ruled the shambling hordes. I suppose that is one reason I don't pick up fantasy again. That, and random charge range.

I moved onto Ultramarines sometime before the end of 2nd, and picked up some valhallans in 3rd. Stopped playing for a long time and only got back into it as 4th wound down, getting some cadians. Have been collecting Guard (the Glorious Tvashtan 422nd) ever since.

Lesse, 4th edition Warhammer 40k.
Friend of mine came back from San Fran with the Battle for Maccarage starter set. He got Marines, I got the 'nids. Ever since, I've bought random sets and painted them, and not until about a year or two ago, focused wholly on my Tyranids.
Hated the Smurfs with a vengeance since then, and Calgar is a favorite punching bag of mine.

and im only 15  :P

so i was walking to school with a freind and he had one of those cases you use for carrying mini cars in:

"what are those?" i asked

"dark elves, there from a game called warhammer"

"that looks really cool"

"yeah, you know i have some guys from the Empire to, want to play?"

"YEAH!"

so anyway, i was hooked by my elamentary school gaming group, i played with empire for the first few games, then i got the Lizardmen battleforce. i played all that year and then dropped it for 2 years because i had no one to play. then i found my FLGS and the rest is history...

so here i am with a horrific win loss record and a lot of great memories

It was just a couple of months ago, I've been hooked ever since. I was first introduced to the universe a year or so ago by a friend who was just dabbling, found it through /tg/ and whatnot, then he got the Eisenhorn trilogy and I read that. It was like giving a starving man a lifelong supply of AWESOME. I've dabbled in the RP's and played around with a little bit of everything, and just a few months ago I went and bought the new DE battleforce, I've whipped ass and gotten it beaten multiple times, tried out alot of stuff. Still finding my niche in my army, but it's amazingly fun regardless

One day i walked past gameworkshop store in Toronto and i saw a  grey old lady battling a young boy, I thought that is some cool amphetamine parrot.
Soon as i arrived back to the UK i went straight to my closest GW store and bought  a Spacemarines battle force.

Good friend of mine played a lot of orcs and goblins he halved his army to teach me and his brother. Hooked and we all got new armies.

My dark elves were great fun to use but after my friend moved away and the flgs closed the army sat at the bottom of my wardrobe.

Few years later me and my two brothers wanted to start 40k. I took up the mantle of grey knights.

Disappointed with the new codex I have fallen to chaos. Fear my daemons :)

I got into it back in 93-94 as a cheaper and less weather dependant hobbie to racing nitro r/c buggies. Then I dropped it around 1999, selling my CSM to my older brother. Amazingly he knew i'd be back and kept it sealed in ziplock bags. After suffering massive trauma to my right arm(re. almost amputated and w/o use for close to a year) he suggested I take it back up to help fine tune my muscle control/motor skills through painting.

When I was 10 years old or so we had to bring boardgames to class (who says school is lame? ;)). One of my friends brought Weapons and Warriors. It's a basic "destroy the castle" boardgame with all kinds of cool warmachines and miniatures. I was hooked and made it my goal to own that game.

Unfortunately it was no longer made so me and another friend decided to make it ourselves. We made miniatures from clay and (kind of) working warmachines using toothpicks and rubber bands. At first it was just shooting the figures with the warmachines. Later on we made rules for moving the figures and how they could fight eachother (getting inspiration off games like Heroscape, who were available but much too expensive for us back then). We were constantly inventing new rules and making new terrain, and when my parents finally got a computer I started looking online for inspiration. Soon we saw the game we were trying to make already existed and that was Warhammer.

At that time I started high school and pursued our own interests. He didn't want to invest in miniatures and went the way of the computer gamer and I did some weekend jobs to pay for Warhammer.

Now I play mainly Fantasy but started dabbling in 40K with Eldar.

My friend got the game for Christmas for some reason and he asked me to try a game. I loved the idea of a war game I could play with models that I could build and paint. After playing a few games, I fell in love with the game. Got the Dark Eldar that came with the 3rd ed starter set and painted them in military camo colors. Then I found out about the IG so I checked them out and fell in love with the Catachans. Got the old thin rule book, a lascannon team and the sniper team.

It's a bit weird for me as I got into painting minis without even realising there was a game involved, that started way back in the late 80's (88 I think!)

I moved schools during my first year of secondary school and some of the kids in my new class had the WHFRP book, I was like "cool do you paint models?", that simple question forged friendships that are still strong today and opened up a cornucopia of gaming. Mostly I was into painting and roleplay  (man, the enemy within campaign is probably my best gaming experience ever!) but not much tabletop apart from WHFB.

I've recently got back into the hobby after a long time out and decided 40k needed to be revisited (I haven't played since RT days).

I cant really remember the first thing I got (I used to buy random blister packs with saved up pocket money) but I do remember my dad getting me the regiments of renown Harlequin boxset, I also remember trying to paint them like the pictures on the box with oil based humbrol paints! ::)

So, much like the person a few blocks up, the third ed. big box was my break-in point too, but rather than making a DE army at the time, I started on a DA army instead. Needless to say, the guy who was breaking me into 40k found it ironic that I gravitated to the Dark Angels when he swore by the Space Wolves. The first individual model purchase was Interrogator Chaplain Asmodai, though that same trip we also bought a case for carrying my minis and a Master of the Ravenwing. I fooled around with the Angels awhile, but eventually the other half of the boxed set won out. I'm now Zandrael Exudaru, Archon of the Kabal of Night's Terror.*Evil Grin* I've been out of the game for some while now, but the new Dark Eldar called out to me, and I couldn't refuse it.

1987 with the 3rd edition and a box of Fantasy Warriors(?) which were 10 each of Dwarfs, Elves, Goblins, Skaven, Orcs and Dark Elves. I was then determined to build a Wood Elf cavalry army - they actually had elite knights and chariots back then. *sigh*

Then after while I found the background too depressing and Germanic and so swapped to 40k!  :o

The rulebook, a box of 8 metal Terminators and a couple of boxes of RT0B1 Space Marines and I was away...

Salamanders which were in Dark Angel colours back then and the apothecaries would paint their left arms red in honour of the blood of their fallen comrades.

I was wondering the mall one day, saw GW, and didn't get anything- but it kept to the back of my mind. Many years later (we're talking from 4th ed-last year), decided over a long period of time to go Guard, got 12 models for Christmas, and that's that.

OoO When I was 12 my friend who played Tyranids had a Carnifex and some Ork grots and we played our own little game of it. We did this for a while and I got hooked and looking through their sight I chose to play Space Marines. Have no clue why just wanted too, I think because there were like hero’s that you play as in games and watch in movies. So that Christmas I got assault on black reach. From then to now we have recruited 7 different people and races to play with us.

In year 8 all of my friends had amassed enormous armies. At the time, about 4000 points apiece.  I played several games as Eldar (one of my friends had 2 armies) and I found that I loved the game.  But there was a tiny problem.  My parents refused to let me buy any.  I waited several years, and then a few months ago they gave in and let me get a box of Termagants (the first box they saw.  I'm lucky it was the right race, and not high elves or something like that), to try and bribe me into not getting video games...  It didn't work, but by the time that they'd figured that out, the one box of Termagants had turned into nearly 1500 points of Tyranids, so they figured there was no point in stopping me.

And that's me.   8) 'Nids all the way!

My first introduction to GW stuff was a friend who played CSM, and it really peaked my interest. So I bought the third edition boxed set (Marines and Dark Eldar) in about 2002 and started playing. I saw the Tau online around early '03 and fell in love, and bought Codex: Tau and some minis, and have been playing ever since. I don't have much in the way of models (few people to play with somewhat dampens the interest), but I've been playing when I can with who I can.

Love the collecting, endure the painting due to my way sub-par artistic skills(Honestly, I screw up stick figures...Badly!) and can't get enough of the gaming, although admittedly it's been a long time between battles.

I brought a copy of White Drawf to read in the back of the car / on the plane when my family went on holiday about 22 years ago.  It had a picture of a Ork Mechboy going nuts with a shoulder slung hand cranked autocannon / gattling gun i it.  Needless to say I went out and brought my first box of boyz a couple of days after we got back. Although the issue was actually all about Epic (or Space Marine / Adeptus Titanicus as it was called then) and that might be why that was the first scale I really seriously got into, (rather than 40K scale.)  A couple of months later they released the first battle wagon model for the 40K Ork's and I was well and truely hooked for life.

Any ways looking to start again, looking to create a hold the line Imperial Fists army, or getting very tempted with Tyranids

Any advice from anyone?

I feel bad for you gordy, I really do. I've heard a thousand stories of mothers binning old armies but they're usually a bunch of plastic catachans. I myself have stood to gain from people throwing away models they could have got good money for.
But this!
This seriously pains me. I guess it's good for the collectors, due to scarcity and all, but I am now thinking about all the oop minis that will never again see the light of day because certain persons have no idea just how beslubber damn expensive this amphetamine parrot is. Countless hard-to-find guard variants melted down for tin, even new models being ditched because they are assumed to have the same valie as a similar weight of gi Joe's. Dammit I am so upset I think I will go have a root around in the local dump.

Maybe I'll find that old bad moon weirdboy or the original great harlequin I've always wanted.

Well the first time I was ever Introduced to the game was 4, maybe 5 years ago or whenever it was that had the Space Marine vs Tyrranid starter kit, as that's what the store was demoing at the time. The first thing I Bought was Assault on Black Reach. However, when I couldn't find anyone to play with at the time, it went unused and got stuck into Storage. When I went back into storage, as I finally found a group to play with, they weren't there anymore, as they probably accidentally got sold. So now, I'm starting again with a Painboy (Which I thought was the Mad Dok HQ piece, but it wasn't. Though Painboys work too, I suppose) and the box with some Boyz and a Trukk.

I got into it because I'm very easily led...

My friends had been slowly building a couple of armies between themselves, and my boyfriend joined and began painting himself up some Dark Angels. Seeing what he was doing, listening to how you play, and interested as interested could be, I figured I wanted in! (Reading a couple of issues of White Dwarf helped too!)

So when we were out about two weeks ago, we popped into Games Workshop and I ended up buying a Dark Eldar Battleforce. They are by far the coolest looking! :D I've since gotten myself a Codex, and will be buying myself the big lovely rulebook once payday rolls around!!

I am one of a large local group of historical wargamers.  Not really a 40K crowd.  Many of us have kids, but they haven't shown much interest in what we do.  Then one of us asked his son about 40K, and thats where it started.  Again, i'm not someone who would normally play 40K (not a knock on the system, I just already have 'enough' different systems that I game in), but if 40K affords me an outlet to bond with my 14 year old girl and give us some father/daughter time, then that's what i'm going to play.

With all of half a dozen games under our belts, my IG and her Eldar are doing rather well against the other father/spawn combos in our group.

Back in 1985 I visited a girlfriend and meet a friend of hers who told me about WF especially the Bretonians.
I was very much into RPGs (Das Schwarze Auge/The Dark Eye)at the time and liked some of the Citadel miniatures.
1986 during a convention I stumbled over Space Hulk and learned about 40k existing but as I played Battletech I was not really interested. However, I bought some Terminators to paint and display (quite some marines followed and I still have them, most of them).
Later Space crusade (StarQuest in Germany) came out, had a really cool TV spot and my girlfriend gave it to me as a present. Things developed from that....

I had played HeroQuest and Dark World as a child and loved the miniatures. Later in High School I bought the Fantasy Starter with The Bretonnians and Lizardmen. I put all the models together but never actually played. Several years later I played Dawn of War which led to an interest in the 40k universe.

About 3 years ago I moved and while unpacking found all my old Fantasy miniatures. Thinking it would be fun to paint them I went to search out a game shop to buy some paint. I got to talking while there and ended up leaving with Assault on Black Reach.

My fiancée first introduced me. It took me a full year to become truly interested because the sheer scope of the lore was very intimidating,  and difficult to grasp at a glance. I really got into it after finishing the book "John Dies at the End", realizing the similar themes(chaos gods, and all that). I started reading as much as I could on Lexicanum and various other online sources.

My first book was "Dead Sky, Black Sun", and I've been chewing my way through Horus Heresy ever since. Thank God Emps for audio books!

My fiancée and I share all of our WH40k stuff, so it's kind of tough to say what "my" first thingy was; but I know my first successful paint job was on the cracked aquilla terrain bit that comes with Honored Imperium. Before that I had made a failed attempt at some Malal converted cultists.

Back in the early 90's, my brother an I were bored and started using our model Knights in armour to play battles with, ie, we'd move the figures 4 inches across the table and when they were touching base to base, we'd roll a dice each, for each of our models and the highest roll won.

We were also making model planes and ships as well at the time.

Then our other brother came home with a Wood Elf (painted) and some Dwarves that a friend at school had lent him and we loved the look of the models, so that's how we got started.

My brother (the one who had brought home the Wood Elf) got WH40K (the second edition? It had the Blood Angels Captain with Powerfist on the front and had 2 Space Marine Tactical squads and 20 Ork Boys, 20 Gretchin and a cardboard Ork Dreadnough-now a Deff Dread and card scenery in the box). I started on a small High Elf army and our youngest brother started on some Night Goblins (cos he found their crazyness entertaining).

After school we stopped gaming and collecting and reading White Dwarf for a while until 2 years ago, when I went into our local GW to see how things were compared to "our day" as it were and things had changed gaming wise a fair bit, but some things were the same (basically move, shoot, close combat was still in the same order), had a quick game in store, spoke with my brother about it. We both then looked online at the GW models and fell in love with them, then Mum got us both the Black Reach game, he got the Orks, I got the Marines and the rest is history.

Yup, that's 2nd Edition. I started with that one, too. I played orks (a biker list) and had tons of fun until college got in the way and I drifted away from the hobby. I basically missed 3rd edition, then wandered into a battle bunker during 4th edition, got back into it, and dragged a bunch of my friends along. Been having a blast ever since.

If I remember rightly the 2nd edition of WH40K had the rule that a model armed with a sword could parry an enemy's attack in Close Combat, which is something that has now been dropped. Also infantry could only move average of 4 inches per turn, whereas now they can move 6 inches. Also Terminators rolled a 3+ save on 2 d6 per model in the old system, whereas its now 2+ on a single d6 to speed things up a bit.

2nd Edition was ridiculously complicated and downright silly in places, though it was a lot of fun. A game took ages to play and the armies were smaller then than they are now.

6th Edition is more complicated than 5th, but I feel it is more complicated in just the right ways. It's fun, flexible, and better balanced in a lot of ways. It's got its problems, of course, but gone are the days where half your army would die because somebody would draw the 'Virus Attack' strategy card.
Title: Re: What made you get in to warhammer and what did you get first
Post by: Ironhide on January 3, 2014, 05:14:29 PM
I don't remember the Virus Attack Strategy card. I do remember that there were 4 missions in the game and each player had to pick out a Mission card that was often a different mission to the opposing player.

Think they were
1. The Assassins (Primary Objective, Kill The Enemy Army Leader)
2. Engage & Destroy (Kill as much of the opposing army that you can in the game)
3. Dawn Raid (Primary Objective, to get a unit into the enemy Deployment Zone by the end of the game)
4. -I can't remember the name of the 4th Mission, but its Primary Objective was the same as Dawn Raid if I remember rightly. Also, all the Missions, except "Engage And Destroy" had Engage & Destroy as secondary objectives.

I can't remember if I've ever posted in this thread, but I was also a 2nd edition starter. I played Chaos Marines at the time, Khornate Terminators had a 2+ save on 2d6. ;)

What I remember most about 2nd edition was my belief that non-terminator infantry were a waste of time, and that we wound up banning Cyclone Missile launchers after a friend "maxed out" a Space Wolf list with a whole bunch of them. At the time, they had something like a dozen missiles they could fire, and you could choose how many you shot each turn? Each shot increased the diameter by a certain amount, and he carpet bombed another [Eldar playing] friend off the board in a single turn. My buddy didn't even get to play, other than to pick his models off the board! Cover didn't grant a save at the time, and strength reduced saves... so with blasts not needing to roll to hit, he multi-krak-missiled everything all at once. Alpha-strike for the win!

I started with a box of Khorne Berzerkers, some Chaos Termies, as they'd just! come out with the Reaper Autocannon armed model, a Chaos Dread with the Power Scourge, and I also bought Abbadon, 'cause the model was badass. I still remember thinking how cool the Claw was on him. :D
Title: Re: What made you get in to warhammer and what did you get first
Post by: Wyddr on January 3, 2014, 06:17:18 PM
I remember all of that, too. Including how cool the claw on Abbadon was.

I played orks. I maxed out on Warbikes and Scorchas and had a huge number of Lootas with Lascannons that would just stand around overwatching. All my bikes would aim directly for enemy units and run them over and then shoot something else. Anybody who didn't make an initiative test was flattened and the other unit would get blown apart by a dozen or so hits with autocannons that did huge amounts of damage.

Then all my bikes would die, but that's okay--they usually took out about 2-3 units with them.

Then I had Kommandos with a Vortex grenade for my enemy's big gribbly. Boom for them, boom for me.

It was completely and utterly bent and silly. My teenaged brain loved the hell out of it, though. The only thing that kept me from having a massive army was my complete lack of money.

Ding! We proxied everything... The old unit boxes were the right size for tanks. We'd tape notes to them about weapons and what they were [Rhino with Havoc Launcher!] and I used Black Orcs [One Axe up, one sword down...] for more 'Zerkers.

I think I used a River Troll for a second Dreadnaught. Man, I wish Guard had "proper" Dreads. I swear, if they come out with a Riptide / Wraithknight type model for Guard in the next codex, I'm gonna post a tactica on how to use three in a 1500 pt army without being cheesy. I'll find a way.

Rapid fire die, and being able to reroll it because the Reaper was built like a brick turd-house. Only Chaos could fire their Plasma every turn, everyone else had to "cool down" between shots. Multi-melta could get an armour pen value of 50 or something... crazy rules and I also loved the hell out of it. I was grateful in 3rd when things sped up, and the really stupid [Vortex Grenade!] rules got phased out, and replaced with different stupid rules. :)

Using green encyclopedia books for hills. Playing on a bare plywood board. Ruins made from the Styrofoam trays that models used to come in. Using empty coke cans for silos... more proxies than actual models. Playing in my parent's basement. Feeling a sense of achievement when all my models were finally primed and no longer grey plastic / pewter.

I have the biggest goofy grin right now.

I also seem to remember Flame Pistols, pistol versions of flamers and Assault Marines could take any close combat weapons that they wanted, so they could all take plasma pistols and powerfists if you wanted, or powerfist and powersword.

Also Dark Angels, Ultramarines and Blood Angels each had their own Tactical squad boxed set at the time as well, (yup, the metal ones...)
Dark Angels I remember had the sergeant with Powersword, a Plasma Gun and Lascannon,
Ultramamrines had a Sergeant with Powerfist, a Flamer and Missile Launcher
Blood Angels had a Sergeant with Chainsword, Meltagun and Heavy Bolter in their box.

Tactical Squad, Devestator Squad and Assault Squads all had to be purchased in the army list as a 10 man unit and ten broken down into 2 5 man Combat Squads if you so desired to split them up. Terminators could actually use Rhino to get around the battlefield (though it was still 1 Terminator to 2 Marines).

Just thought, wasn't the 4th Mission in 2nd Edition "Take & Hold", where you had to get a unit into your enemy's deployment zone and hold it until the final turn had finished, whereas, Dawn Raid you scored for getting a squad in the opposing DZ, and they had to stay for a turn, to get the scoring Victory Points, but could then leave the DZ afterwards?

It was Warhammer Online - I was extremely hyped for it more than a year before launch (2006-7...I played WoW before that) and I played it till the very last second: it was shut down forever on that sad December the 18th 2013.

"Till death do us part"... :)

I got into Warhammer 40k because a friend of mine began running a Rogue Trader game. I always liked playing more or less support roles in tabletop RPGs so I picked out the Navigator class, mainly because it seemed like someone was going to have to do it otherwise how could we run our ship? I had no idea what I was getting into.

"You mean I get a third eye that makes people go insane if they look into it? Yeah, count me in."

Trying to be a good player, I started looking up all the lore that I thought would be pertinent to a good Navigator-- The Warp, Warp Travel, Navis Nobilite, history of The Imperium etc etc. I was hooked. The fiction I am used to lately, mainly due to my profession, is a bit more (don't take this the wrong way) balanced. Reading 40k lore, however, I felt like a fourteen year old in a comic book shop again, flipping through art looking for the most "hardcore" images I could find.

"You're telling me Iron Maiden wrote the Arthurian Legend and set it in space?"
"Yeah, it's something like that."

So I followed the pattern anyone follows when they jump into a complex fictional setting with a rich history. That is, one topic leads to another, finally culminating in a browser window with at least ten tabs open at a time, all pointing to some 40k wiki article or image. It became sort of a guilty pleasure to read up on 40k history in my spare time.

Now, I run a rouge trader game myself; and I made it a group policy not to punish those players who wish to read the texts by making the game as canonical as possible without, at the same time, sacrificing player options. So far it's working fairly well and everyone is having a good time learning about the 40k universe while in their own way adding to it.

In short, more than anything, I enjoy the 40k lore. To be honest I only play Rogue Trader and have never touched the traditional model game. I have nothing against it; it's just that I enjoy the storytelling aspect of 40k much more than anything else. Thanks for reading my little spiel.

Welcome to 40K Online :).

That seems like a very enjoyable and fulfilling way to play the game to me. I'm glad that you're getting so much out of the narrative aspect of it.  It's also great to have someone more focussed on the background around here, as there haven't been so many players whose main interest is in this area in recent times.

It was Robotech P&P RPG books, the store we got them from had the new 2nd edition stuff in. The Eldar codex is what sold me on it, enjoyed the fluff around the race, the idea of grouping specialists in an army just clicked with me. Then there was the Avatar and the Phoenix Lords were all awesome.

A mate introduced me to Warhammer. He had three armies in epic. I was sooo amazed. He bought his models in another state. When I went shopping in my home town, there were only the 40K models. We thought, Ok! Glen will have the epic version and I'll have the 40K. I didn't know there were codex's back then. My first army was Eldar. My mate had several different races in Epic. So I figured I should do the same.

I didn't know that the Space Marines had different chapters.
I bought a Death Company unit, a Deathwing unit and a Long Fang unit. Didn't know they belonged to different chapters till I met another 40K gamer... Doh!

I first learned about it from an old friend and just loved the lore. After reading enough novels I got an Ork army with lots of Lootas.

Fell out for awhile after having trouble finding a local group, but have been getting back in now that I moved and found a local GW store that is good at teaching newbies and such.

Well, honestly, it was a scavenger my mom went on for one of her college courses.  She had to go to all these places and took me with her.  She got extra credit for various things at the different locations, and one of the places was a local GW store.  Her extra credit there was to acquire any miniature; being that neither of us knew what it was she just bought me one model.  So, I bought a Dragon Prince from fantasy, then the rest is history!

Having bought my first box of models at the tender age of 7 (a 5 man box of slot together 2nd ed Khorne Berzerkers) from a Virgin Megastore my older brother informed me that there "was a shop that done those kind of things" and furthermore that "he would take me there".

True to his word, the next week he took me into the local Games Workshop store on a Sunday afternoon. It was full of kids that one of the staffers was whipping into a frenzy, one side of the table shouting "Blood for the Blood God" that was then answered with a "For the Emperor!" in response from the opposite side of the table. This went back and forth for a good few minutes with the loudest side winning first turn. I picked up more models there and then and have been hooked ever since.

Welcome to the site papanurgel.

Does your friend still play? I am guessing you must be a good Painter if you play and paint Nurgle.

What made you get in to warhammer and what did you get first?
Me first my dad and the website and I got a Catachan starter army box set
now you

Had to be from the lore and painting. I love lore. It’s my favourite game element. The deeper the better. And W40k has so much of that. Plus there’s cool minis. Plus I’m a nerd

Is it only 40k lore and figures that you read/paint, or do you read/paint some of the other Tabletop games that are out there?
