40k Online Rules and Netiquette
« on: July 11, 2007, 10:30:19 AM »
If you have been directed to this page, the 40kOnline rules have been updated:
http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=193812.0

We ask that you respect our board rules by adhering to the following guidelines:

1- Do not share, trade, or distribute in any manner here, any copyright material, without the express written consent of the owner.
Games Workshop Intellectual Property Policy
What you can and cannot do with Games Workshop Intellectual Property
To clarify: This includes posting statlines, pointcosts and such found in the codex that you are using. Totals for a unit is ok, but cost per model, upgrade, weapon or such is not ok.

2- Spam is not tolerated on this site.  If you spam you will be labeled as a spammer until you improve, or until you are subsequently banned upon any more infractions.  Spam is any post that does not add something constructive to the topic at hand, and often takes the form of a one-line reply.  Excessive use of smilies is a form of spamming, and will be treated as such.

3- Do not share your account or password to this site with anyone- even spouses, siblings, friends, et cetera. Membership accounts are free and, as such, every contributing member may have a single account.

4- In an attempt to keep this site safe and enjoyable for everyone, there are a few rules here that we'd like you all to respect and keep in mind:

  a) Please do not use racist slurs, prejudiced comments, profanity, or derogatory statements.

  b) Outside of the exceptions noted below, swearing is allowed. Members who find swearing objectionable can use the forum autocensor.

  c) Evading the autocensor by using punctuation marks or purposefully misspelling words is considered an offence.

  d) Do not initiate arguments of a personal nature.  This will only cause the triggering of other members and make this site unsafe.  We will remove anyone who explicitly ignores this rule.

  e) Please put a warning on all material that could upset other members.

  f) Be courteous to other users, even if you disagree with someone or believe that they are full of it. Refrain from flaming posts or comments. You may argue and debate, but do not make any comments of a personal nature.  This place is to help others, and to reach out for help, let's keep it that way.

  g) Do not dig up old threads unless it is a Sticky thread or you have something profound to add to the discussion.  Consider that some of the active boards move more quickly than others, and would be more disrupted by digging up old threads; also consider that the purpose of some threads may be served more quickly than others. The key thing is that you should be contributing in an important fashion to the thread or re-triggering discussion for an important reason.  If your post does not fit either of those categories, then avoid posting in a thread if, as a rule of thumb, the thread is around a fortnight or more dead or it has left the front page of the board.

h)Post a new topic only in one place; cross-posting will not be tolerated.

i)Do not hijack threads or make off-topic replies.  If you have something you wish to say that is not related to the topic being discussed, make a new thread if the topic is substantial enough.

5- Members that do not follow these rules will be issued a warning and have the offending post removed. Continual disrespect for our rules will result in that account being banned. Keep in mind that your activity on this board is monitored. If you are unsure about making a certain post, or activity on this board, please discuss it first with a Staff Member (Staff Members include Moderators, Global Moderators, and Administrators).  Do not take matters into your own hands and comment on others' behaviors, use the Report to moderator button instead.

6- No unauthorized advertisement. You must contact an Administrator for permission to advertise a website other than 40kOnline.  Putting a link and/or banner ad within your signature is the only form of advertisement that is allowed without permission.  However, all other rules still apply to how this advertisement is constructed (such as signature limits); it is prohibited to link to pornography or content that can damage computers or data such as viruses.

7- There is a limit to how large your signature can be:
1. Images can be no wider than 600 pixels and no taller than 150 pixels.
2. Multiple images may be used so long as they don't exceed 150 pixels total height and are no wider than 600 pixels. Stacking text over/under/between images with a total of 150 pixels in height is not ok either.
3. There are no restrictions on the amount of text you can use besides the limit of 500 characters which is preset in the forum software. Do not, however, format your text in such a way that it is obnoxious.
4. Images used on this site should be less than 200KB.

Obnoxious formats:
Hello, I like Berzerkers like I like my cherry pie, red and messy!
Hello, I like Berzerkers like I like my cherry pie, red and messy!!!!!!!!!
Hello, I like Berzerkers like I like my cherry pie, red and messy!He77o, I LiKe bERZerKerZ lIKe I LIKe mY ch3rRY PIe, re]) & me$$y!

8- Do not serial post/double post.  If you have added a reply to a discussion and wish to add more to it, but not one else has replied yet, use the to update your existing reply.

9- Before posting for the first time, please read through the Sticky posts in this forum, as well as any other forum you wish to post in: Beginners and Newbies

A guide to the BBC code used here:
How To Use Bullentin Board Coding (BBC) [how to post an image, and more]

We'd like to stress :: Our community consists of players of all ages and from all walks of life, and that includes teenagers, and even some pre-teens. That said, we would like to see less swearing on our boards, including: @#%$, pissing, tuna melt, Oh Sh*t, F**k the questions, WTF, etc. Sure, these are 'acceptable' words (because they are censored) and some even said on TV, but it doesn't mean they're right.
For more information, please read this thread: Swearing and how it is handled

We understand that there are times when there is indeed something that causes so much excitement or grief in you that you just have to blurt out a swear word, but this need not be so often, and certainly not all the time. We'd prefer if it is kept in to a minimum.

Thank you for reading and respecting our rules.

The original version of the 40kOnline rules was used until July 2007 and is located here:

Yes. That's a textbook case of advertising.

Hey, can someone PM me the answer here, if I want to add something to my army list, but it is back a few pages and I am the last one to post on it, should I repost it, or bump it? If I just edit in the changes I will be ignored.

If it's back a few pages, feel free to make a new thread. And link to the old one if you feel like it.

While you're updating, do you want to change the formatting of the example Report to Moderator link?

Since there isn't a graphic for it, I used blue text above.  As such, there really isn't an example link to begin with, and no easy way to illustrate it in the example, unlike the buttons which have graphic links.

Would writing all your text in orange count as 'obnoxious' ?
If it is, I'll stop.

It can be, particularly in large blocks of text.

I found it very hard to read your stuff in the fiction board, for example, because the orange ends up blurring into a massive blob of colour.

If it is, I'll stop.

I don't see the need for colored text as part of an identity, (staff members use it during user edits so that it is clear that the user did not write it and to make the message stand-out) but that is personal preference.

I will amend the rules, multi-color text was meant to be an example of obnoxious fonts.

Pardon for not answering this much sooner.

Edit: Corrected singular/plural disagreement, changing "Administrator" to "Administrators."

A possibly stupid question, but I figgure it's best to ask rather than get labeled as a spammer/advertising

I'm a DJ, and I've finally found myself a copy of the Sounds of Warhammer compilation that was released ages ago.. If I were to make a mix of the songs in the album and post it up, would that be considered spam/advertising?

not spamming or advertising... but, since I assume the sounds of... cd was copyrighted, it would be illegal for you to post.

I was thinking it might possibly fall under that category as well, but DJ mixes tend to be exempt from the
standard' copyright drama; it's not the whole song that's being used.. It's like the difference between posting a full statline and point cost, and just discussing a model's ability and refering to it's S or T..

generally mixes are considered by the music industry/RIAA to be 'fair use' as long as you're not pressing CDs and selling them, and not making the whole tracks available seperatly..

but if the ruling on it for the board is not to post it, then I won't.. (and listening to a bunch of them now, man some of these tracks really, REALLY don't represent things too well.. Minimal techno is NOT what I imagine the Orks would be using as a themesong/war music..)

I agree with Screwhead. You can find a lot of legal sets from different artists, especially in the techno/trance scene that you can download for free, best example are the sets from the Nature One event or Sensation White, a few days (2-3) of good trance with a lot of used copyrighted songs in them, but's it's legal to download them 'cause the songs are not entirely used in the sets.
But best for you would be to search a bit about your rights on this, just to make it sure, there's probably something useful on the net.

well I know the 'general' rule about how DJ sets are handled (been DJing for 5 years and producing for 13), I was just really checking up how it would fall onto this board's netiquette rules, as on other boards I've been threatened with being banned for spamming/advertising just for having the link/banner in my sig that links to my myspace page with all my mixes..

It might be an acceptable use, but using GW material for remixes is more rare than using it for cosplay.  These two pages will tell you almost everything you'd want to know:

Wu-Tang-Tau, if the mods will allow me, yes, it seems like an obstruction, but then again, would you want people talking about your personal information on the internet? It is a similar case here. Everything that GW has their copyright on is their personal information. While it can be bought in stores, and over the internet, it is their property to do with as they please. Thus, they do not want people distributing their product freely.

It is bad business. It is the same as downloading and stealing songs from artists, bands, etc. and they receive not a penny in return. They worked hard for their material, and for someone to distribute it without consent and without paying them is stealing. The same applies to GW.

As for the other rules of this forum, they actually belong to Purple Raine, for he pays for these forums. He can make whatever rules he likes. He has the moderators to provide input and help him in moulding the rules to make it a place where people will want to gather. If this means restricting what people can say, well then, tough cookies. Not everywhere is for everyone. All the rules are for making this forum as pleasent a place as could be.
