Title: Autumn Painting Challenge [Month 1/3]
Post by: Kitsune Tsuki on August 30, 2007, 11:08:57 PM
Welcome to the September Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon, Serious Callers Only and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I will update this post with a list of people who wish to vow.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.  Vows are still accepted after the 10th, but they can not be changed afterward.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.  It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however.

3. I need to know unit sizes when you post your vows.

FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows, myself included.  Feel free to do vows based on any game system.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Right...this week its a toss-up between one of my sword brethren (acting marshall) or my chaplain.I'm leaning towards the Chaplain. Theres something about skull faced giants you just can't beat! This all depends if I can get my planned conversion done though...more details later in the month.

So, I'm gonna say Chaplain.

I vow a Mordheim Reiklander band of around 9 people (I need to rewrite the list to add a few more so I don't have the specifics) and the =][= Arbites Judge.

NB: I don't have a working camera at the moments.  I'll borrow my dads whenever possible.

I finished my last vow rather quick so let me try to make it a challenge for me this month:

I Vow:
-Stegadon without skinks [as explained last month why]
-Skink priest
-Skink chief
-10 skinks
-2 salamanders

Should be harder to paint, perhaps I will vow to do some more after I finished these this month later on in another post. But I think that this will come a long way for this months painting challenge :P

- 1 GW version Exorcist
- 1 FW version Exorcist (yes, I'm nutz)
- 1 Eldar Farseer (commissioned)

I think I could do more, but school is already starting and I can't gaurantee how long it takes.  Also, this exorcist is a 3 month long project.  First 2 months was just filing the shot down.  Gawd, whatever I've complained about GW's molding before is NOTHING compared to this piss poor molding job on this pewter exorcist.

No vows have been updated.

Ironcultist, can you clarify your vows.  I'm having great difficulty reading your post.  Please avoid using abbreviations, and use proper punctuation.  Be straight forward and list the models you're going to paint.

I will list it up for you to make it easier.

-1 deamonprince
-2 chaos marines
-2 possesed
-1 obliterator

Perhaps a bike squad if he has the time.

@Ironcultist: I don't want to pull you down or anything lad but perhaps you should pay more attention to your grammar? I know that it might be hard if your native tongue is not English, but most of us are able to explain ourself and make proper post with the use of , . and paragraphs. Try to do the same and you will see that you will have allot of more replies to your posts.

Cheers.

I have finished my stegadon dinosaur by now aside of the howdah and giant bow. Also started to work on my salamander and skink priest.

I think I'm gonna go for painting up my some of my brand new Chaos models! so.....

I vow:

1 chaos term lord
1 defiler
10 chaos marines

I'm gonna paint em up as Iron Warriors (although they have lost their special rules for the time being (I was told by a GW staff member that they will have another book come out with the bloodthirster, lord of change etc. as well as possibly the return of individual special rules!))

I'm not painting em as iron warriors because its easy by the way........:P I just think that the colours are really effective and the fluff is cool!

So, theres my vow.

It's usually your fault, not the fault of the greenstuff.  The sticking strength of greenstuff to plastic or metal isn't great, it's usually best to reinforce it with superglue, once the putty has cured, wherever possible.  For larger items (especially wings) I'd advise using a pinvice to insert a paperclip into the item you're building on to provide added support and rigidity, which will also make sculpting much easier.  It's much easier to sculpt the putty around the clip rather than insert the pin once sculpted, a) because of the rigidity and improved ease of sculpting and b) because it's a delicate task usuing a pin vice to drill into greenstuff.

So far with my Emperors Champion, all I need now is to do the sword, right pad motif, iron halo/rosarius, base and touch up the purity seal parchment a little, along with painting the holster and backpack and glueing them on.  The helmet also needs touching up because I tried the eye glow tutorial inthe stickied threads, didn't have a proper glazing agent and relied upon watering it down and to cut it short botched the job impressively.  I will however also be trying sourced lighting from the iron halo.  Overall the armour I'm very please with, considering it's the first serious painting I've done in years, though the laurel wreath is very shoffy and the loin cloth has some extreme contrast going on which makes it very much an arm-distance-pleasant model.

The outside of the cloak on the Inquisitor scale arbites is just about done in a brown leather look that took a lot of washes of scorched earth over snakebite leather, with some later highlighting.  So far I'm very pleased with it, though we'll have to wait and see how it all looks once the inside is painting purple.  Other than that the model remains mostly white, except for where it's been blocked in where I plan to try NMM gold.

The mordheim warband has been cut off it's sprue, slightly converted and mostly glued together and onto bases (with superglue so that I can break them off to greenstuff on some cobbles when I get round to it).  Other than that it's just the captain that I've undercoated and played around with a little.

Pictures to come when I can blag my dads camera.

The chaos black/grey parts are a bit to much when I look at it from the sides IMO. BUT I love the gold, can I have your recipe how you did it? I always use -bestial brown-shining gold - brown inkt to do it but yours look awsome.

Which one?  the organs or the extra armour?

The extra armor, it's - boltgun metal as base, 2 layers of shining gold, a wash of chestnut ink with 1/2 gloss varnish and 1/2 water applied heavily.   Then 1 light spray of teslor's dullcote to get ride of half the shine caused by the ink wash.

The organs is a bit tricky.  Boltgun metal as base, then 1thin layer of shining gold, 1 thin layer of brass gold, ink mix of chestnut ink and brown ink in a drybrush fashion (not wash), ink wash 1/2 black ink 1/2 water, very lightly drybrush mithril silver, ink wash again with 1/4 black 1/4 brown 1/2 water.  Then spray 1 light sprya of teslor's dullcote to get ride of the shine caused by the ink wash.

I vow to paint a Thornback Tyranid for my brother's "Wolfen" Renegade Brood.

I also vow to paint my Riath-Quan (Warlock)...provided I manage to get it.
Clarify what a Thornback Tyranid is.

Anyways, vows are updated.

So, as for my progress, I've done nothing.  I want to finish up Thagrosh and my Rune Priest this weekend though.  However, I did assemble two four Nyss Raptors and most of my Angelius.

So here are the pictures I said I would post up...I decided that I might paint the other Talos while I was at it...

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi163.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft285%2FRazzrojo%2FDSC00128.jpg&hash=1ea37e3bf4738c9bb84f78fda0579500abc2c36a)

The two runes mean "merciless" (on the red helmeted Talos) and the other means "eternal slavery."

That means I'm only left with the 10 warriors.  With any luck I might get them finished before the 21st.

DJ-of-E, you always have really cool stuff posted, I look forward to seeing your stuff with these challenges.

Emperors Champion is finished.  I wimped out of doing a glow effect in the end.  No pictures for the time being, he's sitting in the cab at the local GW as part of a colour scheme competition until (I think) the 29th (they have an Apocalypse competition ... the person with the best suggested Space Marine colour scheme will see the contents of the Space Marine Company box set painted in that scheme for the store army).

Mordheimers are coming along nicely - the two tone cream and red is done which makes up the majority of the models.  Next is the skin, then leathers, then weapons, then basing, then done.

They aren't taken properly so its hard to comment. I like the deamon wings but the marines are either to far away or not sharp enough to judge. Sorry about that cultist. I would recommend adjusting your camera and putting some white paper behind the miniatures.

I agree on the white paper behind & under miniatures to decrease and sharpen the contrast.  btw, what camera do you have, maybe somebody will help you with the adjustments.

Here's my current WIP.  I finally finished the inking and highlighting and the signage.  Now I need to do the arms and backpack.

BTW, if you think the metals are too sharp in contrast of color's, it's due to the fact that it's heavily glossed at the moment.  I usually have my completed figures glossed in preparation to be coated with Teslor's Dullcote to get ride of the shining.

Anyway, I've managed to paint up my Raveners, but disaster has struck!  I've been bitten by the Black Templars bug and have two weeks to put together a 500pt army, and Uni starts after the weekend.  I'm sure I can fit my Termies, Genestealers and the remaining guardsman in around that... I hope.

They aren't quite finished, I still have a rune to paint on their backs, but I want to wait until I've painted the last 4 warriors, so that the job is uniform, should have that done next week, the weather isn't quite good enough to spray undercoat those guys tonight.
Enjoy.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to resize the photos.  Hmm, doesn't seem to get to the right size, hopefully this isn't too big for you guys.

Well, my beastlords 100% finished and my giant and chariot 25-50% complete but I'm gonna have to fail this month, something has come up at work which needs my attention, so I have to halt painting....

sorry...

Well, an update on my work to date:
Got sidetracked on a new scheme for my guardians, and had to do a full room tidy as the painter and carpeter are coming => Very little work possible. Still ive relocated, and have been working on a warlock that i will post soon(Rojo has seen it in process). Going to strip the rangers today, and do some banshee work. Second warlock will also get some love, and I feel that my choice of pledging my farseer was a mistake as id rather like to fiddle with some modelling for the character. Hence I am removing my farseer from the pledge and replacing with a 3rd warlock together with a squad of guardians.

So as stands:
2 Warlocks (1 about 25%, 1 nonstarted)
1 Warlock (95% complete, need to base properly)
5 Rangers in metho
2 Banshees need detail
3 Remainders need further plate work to complete
10 Guardians and platform unstarted.

But i do have the next two weeks off to do stuff, so i figure ive got a good chance. Anyway off to it now.

Camera too close to the models!  Take a step back man ;)

Anyway, as for my vows so far ... Emp Champ is done, Mordheim is mostly done (metals, leathers, hair and basing to go along with tiny details) as for the Arbites well ... he took a backseat.  Largely because I got distracted by a Farseer and decided to begin painting my Inquisitor scale Space Marine ...

To keep you updated all:

finished the:
Stegadon
Skink chief
Skink Priest
Vostroyans [aside of one who needs to be based]

Still working on the DE army. It will consisto ut of 20 warriors 16 wyches 8 mandrakes 2 raiders and 1 ravager. Although the warrios are near finished its hard to keep pressing on to finish the army as the fun of painting is fading due to the huge amount of models :P

i like it i like the over all effect and think its a nicely done paint job, i wish people around my area could paint any where near aswell as that coz then the battles i played mine wouldnt be the only well painted army, as it is i come accross such colour schemes as "plastic grey" "couldnt give anphetamine parakeet" and "rushed to get onto table" so i love seeing people on 40ko who take pride and time over painting and modelling as thats what this hobby is primarily about

nice stuff

Looks like you stole the 'Eavy Metal model, DJ of E :P

Rojo; those are some very nice models, seen from a normal distance; I wouldn't have thought it, but the purple and blue together actually work very well to make them look menacing. It's a pity when you get up close, it looks like they just came out of their aerobics lesson and are still wearing their hotpants. ;)

Sorry, I can't change your vow for you.  However, if you want to do spore mines instead of genestealers, that's cool with me.  Just be aware that you would have failed the vow 'officially', but if you're happy with what you got done, that's ok.

Anyways, finally put down some paint.  Did the metals on the two flameguard and Vilmon, as well as shaded the purple cloth area, and the bone clothe areas on vilmon.

The rest are at about 50%. with my final few weeks of my degree being very hectic i think im gonna have to hold off for the next month.

Somehow I was unable to see the forum, I don't hope I was the only one having problems logging in? Anyway this is what I needed to paint:

10 vostroyans
1 skink chief
1 skink priest
1 stegadon
1 salamander
16 wyches
1 lord on skyboard
2 raiders
20 warriors
1 ravager
8 mandrakes

I failed my vow, I only need to finish ONE of the raiders which is done for 50% orso, sucks but this was really pushing me to the limit.

wow thanks thats high praise coming from someone of your calibre, i have a few more bases in the works at the moment, specifically one team reloading, another setting up a weapon and im debating whether it would be too dark to have a team who has been hit by a shell and body parts are every where and the weapons been detroyed, what thinketh you?

In terms of showing off, awesome.

In terms of using it for game, doesn't really make sense, wouldn't that unit count as being destroyed ^_^;;;  However, if you use it in terms of replacement for that particular platoon's models killed, then thumbs up to ya.  The guard are there to spread blood onto the ground for the Emperor, unlike Space Marines. =P
