Inquisitor Lord (NMM, WIP, pics) (Updated May 8, 2007)
« on: May 4, 2007, 08:33:06 PM »
Following on the heels of my Nicodemus model, I present my 40k entry for the 2007 Winnipeg Golden Gaunt... The special edition Inquisitor Lord model.

I've had this model for a long time, and have actually repainted parts of it twice already.  I'm pretty happy with it so far (and as far as I know this is the first model ever to weild a wooden plasma gun)

C&C are welcome and appreciated!

I still need to finish up the face, all of the non-metallics (especially the golds), and there's the usual battery of touchups, but he's about 75-80% finished.

Looking quite the bit better then tabletop quality but not yet competition material.

Maybe the touching up will make quite the change.

I do vaguely remember seeing you paint another one of those inquisitor models using metallics. The highlighting was far more convincing on that one.

Solitaire, it's funny you should mention the "other" model.  This is in fact the same one, and most of the paint is exactly the same as the original.

Anyway, here are some better pictures of the essentially-complete model.

And just for general amusement, here are my two previous attempts at this model.  Most of the paint is still the same, with a few touch-ups and the metallics redone:

Attempt #1
Attempt #2

The first and second ones are the same, except with lightsourcing on the second.  Since the lightsourcing was over-done and not terribly good, I got rid of it when I repainted him the third time.

And there, the extra highlight in the golds did the trick.

Still, I liked the source lighting. It was slightly overdone but not that bad when toned down just ever so slightly.

Thought you got your hands on a second one of those

The leg, shoulder, face and red coat look great.
Not so great, the hat which I think still needs some blending on the top of the rim and the greatcoat for which goes the same.

The base looks good already. Add a broken bottle and a decapitated rat and you're my hero  ;D :P

What is the effect you are aiming at with the gun? It looks almost convincingly like wood.

No critisizm as such, this is the kind of input I think a good painter like you can work with so I hope you take it that way indeed instead of think I'm whining  ;)

EDIT:: source lighting can be a pain! I just started repainting a repainted attempt on source lighting as well.

Yeah, that's a genuine wooden plasma gun.  Don't know what happens when it overheats, but it should be an interesting show of pyrotechnics.  I wanted to do something different than your standard metal-cased plasma gun, and painting it as a single continuous surface was a nightmare to highlight.  So woodgrain it was; an easy pattern to paint, and it breaks up the monotony.

As for the greys, it's basically just black with bone mixed into it to varying degrees on the coat.  For the NMM silver I started off with black+codex, and worked gradually up through codex to fortress to white.

The gold is a base of bestial brown, blending up to desert yellow, and finished off with desert+white.

And to wrap up, the model won second place in the 40k category, finishing just behind the best-in-show piece by a local painting guru.  But my Nicodemus and Legolas (not photographed yet) models won gold in the WHFB and LotR categories, so it was a pretty good day for my brushes.

this is such a shame.....

I KNOW this mini looks great in reality, I can tell by the detailing and blending in the NMM,  but I think the pictures do nothing to show the mini in its true glory.

search CMON, forums and get some good pictures and really showcase this mini and the time effort and skill that has gone into it :)

EDIT:   I liked the version you did with lighting source on the green plasma
