2000pt Tourney coverage
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:26:24 PM »
Game 1 of the Tournament I participated in yesterday. Necrons Vs Eldar at 2000pts.

Necrons from the Tomb of the Brotherhood of the Spiraling Worm.

Dark Pharaoh (Lord), Nightmare Shroud, Staff of Light, Res Orb.
Haunter in the Dark (Lord), Destroyer Body, Resurection Orb, Warscythe.
Immortals x6
Pariahs x6
Phalanx I (warriors x10)
Phalanx II (warriors x10)
Phalanx III (warriors x10)
Destroyer Armada I (x3)
Destroyer Armada II (X3)
Scarabs x5 with Disruption Fields.
Tomb Spyders x2
Monolith.

Eldar, Craftworld Unknown. (Unit Numbers lost to memory)

Eldrad.
Avatar of the Bloody Handed God.
Striking Scorpions.
Pathfinders
Prathfinders
Wraithguard x10 with spirtseer.
War Walkers x3 with Scatter Lasers.
War Walkers x3 with Scatter Lasers.
Shadow Specter Aspect warriors.

Primary Objective. Reduce your opponent to below 50% victory points.
Secondary Objective. Control the most terrain features.
Tertiary Objective. Nominate a troops unit, it must survive.  (For me, Phalanx III, for him the Wraithguard.

Dawn of War Deployment, he took the first turn. I didn’t deploy and chose to walk on turn 1.

The Primary objective and the Tertiary objectives were ones I knew I had no hope of winning and could only hope to draw. There was no real way I could take down ten fortuned wratihguard. Not at all. However, if I could lure them out of cover the Pariahs and monolith ‘could’ damage them. The truth was if I could kill just that one unit I could win both objective. The secondary objective of terrain I felt would be easy as his army relied on being static to do damage to me, and thus he could only claim the two objectives he deployed in (A woods and a Forrest). I kept my nominated unit in reserve (one of the warrior squads), so he had little chance of hurting it.

The game started well, with me giving my opponent nothing to shoot turn one (as I chose to walk my whole army on turn 1) and rolling well for night fight with the Destroyers taking two wounds off the Avatar.

His War Walkers and pathfinders were the only real threats I needed to worry about at range, so I sent my lord and scarab up the right flank to deal with the pathfinders and war walkers there and hopefully draw the Avatar back into his lines. I didn’t want it coming towards my phalanx. The Pathfinders and War Walkers focused their fire on my Destroyers in lue of most anything else, however were never able to kill any whole units and thus I was able to keep bringing them back. The Lord made it into combat with the Pathfinders turn three and killed half the unit (leaving about three or so) while the Scarabs managed to wreck one war walker and kept them in combat the whole game. My Destroyer lord however was assaulted by Eldrad and the wraithguard. Lost combat by one, and was run down when he failed his morale test.

The Shadow Specters kept firing at the monolith all game with their S10 shot, but never managed to even glance it. However, in the middle game, I got too bold with the Monolith and managed to get it within range for the Wraithguard to walk through the ruins to shoot at it with their wraithcannons. Out of ten shots, he got five penetrating hits which was more then enough to wreck it. After that, they shot done my whole pariah unit and killed my second lord (who didn’t get back up). I attempted to hold up the Wrathguard in combat with the Immortals and a destroyer unit, but I lost combat and lost both units. At the end of the game, I controlled three terrain peices, to his two and we both had out nominated units alive. However I lost nearly everything except my warriors, tomb spyders and some Destroyers.

I lost the Primary, won the Secondary and tied for the Tertiary.

Game II

Blood Angels.

Mephiston.
Captain with Assault Squad.
Another Jump pack squad of some sort.
Two Tactical squads with Rhinos.
Command Squad with Rhino and plasmaguns.
Devistator squad with two plasmacannons and two missile launchers.
Vindicator

The mission was to control the most table quarters by having the most points in the quarter and have at least one troops and one Elite/Fast attack/Heavy support choice in it.

Secondary Objective, was to claim terrain pieces.
Tertiary objective was that your opponent nominates one weapon/psychic power/ability in your army. If you don’t use it, you gain points for tertiary. I Nominated Mephiston’s Wings power and my opponent nominated the Monoliths Particle Whip.

Deployment was Pitched Battle.

My opponent took the second turn. I deployed in a phalanx with immortals in front, pariahs and lord behind, warriors on both flanks and behind, destroyers on both flanks with tomb spyders, lord and scarabs on my left and Monolith on my right. My army was pretty much fully occupying a bunker-type ruin, thus had much cover.

He compressed all his rhinos on the right, with all his tactical and devastator squads combat squaded. He had a devistator/tactical squad in either corner of the table, with the captain, jump pack squads and mephiston in the back of the tanks. Vindicator deployed in cover in some ruins.

On my turn, I spaced out my units and fired the destroyers at a rhino and the vindicator. Stunned one of the Tactical rhinos, but failed to damage my opponents vindicator. Lord and scarabs turbo boosted up my left flank. In his turn, he spread all the armour 18” right into my lines with the assault marine and mephiston in toe. He chose to forfeit his tertiary objective and allow mephiston the ability to fly. Vindicator fires at my Scarabs and fails to do any damage.

My second turn started off disasterously, as I was compleatly unable to (With my whole armies shooting) to damage any of his vehicles. However, I turbo boosted the Scarabs behind his assault marines and the Pariahs Souless rule and the Dark Pharohs Nightmare Shroud saw the Captains assault squad and the other jetpack squad fail their morale checks and flee. I had my Destroyer Lord charge the Vinidcator, to effect and the Pariahs and foot lord had the same results against another rhino.

I thought it was game over at this point, as I had failed to kill even one of his models. Ironically, this is the point in the game things went well for me. Mephiston from this point onward never got another power off. Due to Souless from the pariahs, he failed every psychic test this turn. One combat squad tactical squad and mephiston charged my pariahs, only killing three in total, while his command squad fired three/four plasmaguns into one of my tomb spyders, but my cover held out. His Captain and assault squad fled off the table, as they could not regroup due to the scarabs, but the other squad regrouped and killed ‘em.

In my following turn, I portaled my lord out of combat, which forced Mephiston out of combat as well, as that was the only model he was in contact with. I then activated the Nightmare Shroud again (With my Destroyer lord boosted behind his lines) forcing the Jetpack squad and Mephiston to start running. Tomb Spyders and the Dark Pharoh allowed me to kill his command squad and tactical squad (rescuing my Pariahs). The game then had my whole phalanx spreading out to the table quarters, while I picked off his troops choices and escorted half his army off the table with my Destroyer lord and Tomb Spyders. At the end of the game, I had lost all the Pariahs, Destroyer Lord, three Destroyers, while he had four squads and both HQ choices run off the table.

I controlled three out of four table quarters, we tied on terrain occupied and we both forfeited the tertiary objective.

Game III

Blood Angels. Lucifer Strike Force.

Tycho
Sternguard squad of 8 in Landraider Crusader.
Assault squad of 8 with flamer in Landraider Crusader.
Assault squad of 8 with meltagun in landraider Crusader.
Vanguard squad of 8 with assorted nastiness in Landraider Crusader.

Holy shtlk monkey landraiders batman.

Primary mission was to have the most points in the middle of the table. Secondary objective was to nominate one of your HQ choices, and it had to live. Tertiary was to have a non HQ monstrous Creature or Vehicle alive at the end of the game.

Spearhead Deployment.

Being Necrons, this game would either go really well, as I take apart his raiders, or poorly as he just walks all over me. After the success of the Nightmare shroud in the previous game, I wanted to repeat the effects.

I had the first turn again.

I kept the same sort of phalanx deployment as last game (I like it), while my opponent had a line of landraiders up front, with the sternguard raider in behind. Tycho rode with one of the assault squads.

Turn one, I desperately wanted to immobolize at least one of the raiders, but only managed to blow the assault cannon off and shake two of them. I Scooted the scarabs in front of my immortals (so I had a wall infront of my main lines created between a Forrest and the monolith), while the Haunter in the Dark joined with a warrior squad on my left flank. I brought the destroyers on my left flank a little too far forward. Hopeing we could take the bait and charge the Destroyers and scarabs so I would have two units to shroud in my next turn. In his turn, he took the bait, with the Vanguard charging and eliminating the Destroyers (who were Okay, due to a nearby resorb and awesome we’ll be back rolls). The scarabs however, died realSincey quickly and would not be getting back anytime soon from an assault squad. In my turn, I activated the Shroud and the tactical squad flees. I had scooted the Destroyer lord behind the vanguard and the monolith was moved in anticipation for the assault squad to break. Since the assault squad was no more of a threat, I blasted most of my army at the vanguard, who took substaional casualties and then broke themselves. I love making my opponents LD7.

The last assault squad rhino attempted to shoot down the pariahs, knocking out only two, while Tycho charged the unit. Tycho killed all the pariahs, and my lord failed to wound him. In my following turn, I portaled out of combat with tycho and shot him down with Immortals, while warriors blasted the last assault squads landraider, immobilizing it, then it was eaten to death by one of my tomb spyders. The vanguard landraider was stripped of all it’s guns and another empty raider was shaken.

The second assault squad charged one of my warrior squads, but failed to break my unit. I then portaled them out of combat to cripple the vanguards ‘raider. The assault squad was shot and charged to death by other warriors and tomb spyder. The other spyder ate the stripped raider. The vangaurd and first assault squad ran off the table and it was only a matter of time before I wrecked the last Landraider and killed his last squad. At the end of the game, I lost the scarabs, pariahs and destroyer lord, while I wiped out his whole army by turn 5.

I won all three objectives by default.

The Tournament was invitational only, people who had won awards at previous tournaments. I was in, because I won a best presentation at the last trouniment I was in.  There was about ten players.

Four Blood Angels.
One Guard.
One Tyranid.
One Dark Eldar.
Two Eldar.
One Necron (me).

The placing was

Tyranids First Place.
Necrons (Me) Second Place.
My Second opponent (Blood Angels) came in third.

I ended up winning two metal silver dice and a monolith. Not a bad turn out.

Thanks for reading.

nice reports mate. Congrats on your wins aswell. Always good to see tournaments where supposedly weaker armies do well. Seems you know exactely what your srmies strengths and weaknesses are.
Just a quick query though in the second battle 'His Captain and assault squad fled off the table, as they could not regroup due to the scarabs' don't marines auto regroup?
Again congrats on the places and would love to have seen some pictures. :)

Marines cannot auto regroup if an enemy is within 6".

Thanks for reading. I was meaning to take some pictures, but totally gaped out once the games started and didn't end up doing so.

Great reports, love to see necrons do well, they rarely even ever show up around my neck of the woods.

Thanks for reading, glad you enjoyed the report. I also fail to see any other necron players at my store. A few people own armies, but I am the only one who plays 'em.

Great reports and well played.

I think those of us that have stuck with Necrons throughout fifth edition have learnt the hard lessons and are using our armies to full effect with our opponents unfamiliar with what we are capable of. The last Throne of Skulls I went to there were five Necron players (out of a tournament of 140) and we came 2nd overall in the army rankings.

The only thing that seemed odd to me was against Mephiston -- he's a Monstrous Creature, therefore Fearless and can't run away.

I agree. There is a lot of tricks open to use in the book, but a lot of them are vocally dismissed in comparison to the more popular choices which are then crushed against current armies. One of the main things necrons really have is their ability to severely muck up fearless armies and a lot more armies are becoming non-fearless.

The only thing that seemed odd to me was against Mephiston -- he's a Monstrous Creature, therefore Fearless and can't run away.

He's not a monstrous creature, he's an infantry unit of one model. I'll agree his stats are similar to a monstrous creature.
