Tutorial: Building a Carboard Monolith ** Done **
« on: November 22, 2007, 10:37:25 AM »
Hello all, I have been playing with the idea of building Monolith from Cereal Boxes and minimal Bitz (just to keep it Tourney Legal).... so here is what I did.

I assembled the Corner Bastions which is realatively simple and a good place to start. I suggest that you start with the Exhaust Port section, add on the outer Bastion section, then build the Weapons Alcove, and finsih each Bastion off by attacting the rear section. Here is a Picture of 2 Bastins done (without armour plates) and of course you would have to build 4 of them.

Next you will probably want to get the Core of the Monolith put together so that you can nail down the general shape of it, here is a picture. Note: I used Sprue edges to re-inforce the seams; but in retrospect, folded paper tabs work better; as I used them for the rest of the build and they are easier to word with and allow for tolerence without comprimising the shape.

Next you want to attach the 4 Bastions to the Core; but don't glue the front sections together just yet, as you will need room to manouver the sliding parts into it.
Note: in this picture you will also see that I have assembled the Sliding section for the front Portal Cover.... Think about this carefully and make sure that you really re-inforce it where you can so that it can withstand some usage. You may also notice that (section to Left side) I left a little extra on each piece that I cut to give me a little tolerance while Dry-Fitting things prior to gluing them.

I now have the 1st layer of Armour sections and attached to Bastions, and I am going around with some filler to make sure that I have decent edges before progressing any farther. I am also Doing up the Stairs and Portal section so that I can get all of that working.

** Images to follow **

Feel free to check back on my progress and Comments, suggestions, and critiques are welcome as always.

Cheers and happy Gaming.

Edited: As previously underlined, posting templates for such a project is clearly a GW IP infringment. Link removed.

Thank you Bouargh, I didn't realize that.... and It won't happen again.

thats a cool template, keeping that one :) but if your are serious about building the monolith, i would but it out of plastistruct or plasticard (samething, different name) this will be more durable and easy to paint.

This is mostly a cost issue... Plasticard is not always the easiest to work with and it incures cost... I will simply order the one Weapons and Green Rod sprues ($30.00) to save time and use Cereal Boxes and the Necron box (adding insult to injury here GW - both of which I happen to have at no cost). Oh and Cereal box is actually quite resilient, you have to remember that each seam gets a Double folded piece, the Bastions get tons of armour plating, and the basis "Boxlike" construction all add to its strength. I will be using some other materials as well (Foam Core that I hapen to have laying around - and such); but this is meant to be a cheap, easy build.

As is I will have 3 Monoliths ($90.00) for almost the same cost as one standard boxed GW Monolith; and I will have soem stuff left over, or I coudl go even cheaper by not ordering the Green Rod Sprue (Weapons Sprue stays as it save too much time).

Paint is not an issue, the cardboard gets a thin coat of watered down glue before Primer and there is no issue... already did it on many a Drop-pod.

That a nice looking monolith but you should remove that link.

It's definetly a breach of GW's copyright.

Here are a few updates in the Project.

Here is what it looked like with the 1st layer of Armour platees put on the Bastions.

And here it is with the Portal section on and some of the Second layer of Armour plates on.

Same stage with portal open and stairs down.

Hope you like it so far. I got the rest of the Armour Plates cut out and most of them put on last night, Pic soon. I also got the side Pilons cut out with all their parts, and stopped by the local Hobby and got the tubing to build the rear section so that should be done soon as well. Tonight and tomorrow should be decent for getting some work done; but I do want to work on a couple of Paint projects as well (so many projects, so little time); anyhow I'll try and get some more done and updated by Wednessday.

Here are the final pics of the Monolith made up of Cereal Box Cardboard, the Weapons and Green Gen Sprues from GW (making it legal in Tourneys), Some Plastic tubing, and a lot of GS/Filler.

Detail shot of the Ruins I did out of Green Stuff. Note that I hadn't finished all the sanding when I took this picture. To make the Ruins I did a Reverse Template from the Portal Door that came on the Weapons Sprue (but was slightly small than I desired); After that set, I simply cast the ruins with GS and trimmed them up before glueing them in place. This Template will also serve as a means to put Ruins on many other Necron items I am building.

Front View. Note that I just set the Green Crystal and Portal pieces in place as they will be removed for Priming/painting and then all the Green parts will be put into place. Also notice that the GW Weapons fit into the Bastion Alcoves with minimal filling as teh Template was really accurate.

Rear View. Note that the Weapon Sprue also had the Rear Pylon on it, so I saw no reason not to use it, I also just used a couple of Bases for the rear circle as I was getting pretty sick of cutting Cardboard at this point.

Sorry for the lack of updates; but the Christmas sesson kept me pretty busy.

I would give it a glue cover, watered down pva just to give it more support, the pva would seep into the cardboard then the water would evaporate and the glue dried.
What not to say at a dinner party: "Help yourself to nibbles, he was our favourite hampster but it would have been what he wanted."
Enlightened?

Thanks for all the Comments, I do appreciate them all. I will actually be doing up at least 3 more of these (2 for my Crons, and one for a different convertion); for the other 2 going into my Cron army, I will buy the GW weapons Sprue; but I will not buy the Green Crystal Sprue again as it is hardly worth it when a bit of imagination, cardboard, glue and paint will accomplish the same effect in any colour I want.

Oh, and I will definately be giving it the "Glue Over" as I do to all Cardboard Builds.... The other thing the Glue does is deal things up and gives a smooth surface for the paint to go onto.

I'll try and post a few more Pictures as I get it painted up; but this will be weeks down the road as I am heavily involved with my Eldar right now.

Fantastic work.

I also love the necron icon. It is done from greenstuff, I presume?

OK, I got the Glue over done and the weather was good enough to get it outside for a coat of Primer, so here it is about to be painted.

I hope you enjoy it and comments and suggestions are always welcome.

You did see all those WIP shots at the top of the page right..?

It looks pretty damn awesome Moc. Just not sure if I approve of an Eldar player making anything Necron... ;)

Thanks for all that comments, Oh and I also play SMurf's, Necrons, Orkz, and Chaos

My Necron army "The Mighty Green Machine" is 1500pts now, and although it is not all painted (painting Eldar still) here is the paint scheme for you.
