Welcome to the Mayday Painting Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.
Due to board downtime, we're just ignoring the March/April challenges.
A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.
NEW RULES
1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.
2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.
Special props to (drum roll)... Marshall George Timson and Jellobiafra! the only painters that successfully completed their vow for all three months of the Winter challenge.

Painting Challenge FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.
Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.
Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.
Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up :)
Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...
Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.
Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 10th.

just today, i just primed a bunch of stuff i had gotten for christmass. may 2nd now, so should be easy enough.
I vow to paint my Vindicator tank. Ultramarine colors, as thats what all my marines are.
I vow to paint my biovore. its the old-style metal model, with 3 spore mines.
I vow to paint my eldar jetbike- this one is going to be feilded either as a warlock(to go with my 6 gaurdian jetbikes) or farseer.
I am capable of taking pictures, but only small, low quality ones at the moment. my camera software is not playing nice at the moment, but it works. and not sure how to post em once i get em taken.
I will get some 'before' picutres, before i start.

I finished 3 War Walkers last month, it's a pity there had been no April Challenge.
I plan to paint at least 3 Guardian Jetbikes this month. I hope I will finish 4 and repaint 2 more (I don't like the colour scheme any more).
For the record : a squad of Guardian Jetbikes (thats 3 at least).

I'll try to finish my striking scorpion squad (5 left) and paint my converted wave serpent. Going to be tough since I'm concentrating on modelling at the moment but I'll do my best. :)

Here you are: completed DW libby. He's converted from lysander and a GK termie. I left off the psychic hood as I intend to use him as a grand master also. And I didn't like the sound of using a shoulder pad much.
For some reason the camera has made the highlights look really obvious. They are a bit more subtle than that in real life.

I started construction on the vespids last night, and after building the strain leader(the only model I have done so far), I wish that I was dead.... its so horrible, what were they thinking with a metal sprue!

One of my Jetbikes (wip), you can't see much of the Snakebite Leather/Bleached Bone parts.
As you can see, the transfer won't stay on the model. The same problem again. I know - Microsol solvent will help, but I have no idea where I to get it (in Germany).
Right now, I'm thinking about how to paint the pilot, Gory Red or Bleached Bone helmet. My Defender Guardians have Bleached Bone helmets, the Storm Guardians will have Gory Red helmets. Hmm...what to use for the Jetbikes? (green?)
Btw. How do I glue the flag to the pole with the tiny ends of the flag sticking together? I tried several times to glue both sides of the flag on each other, in the end, I had to cut a few pieces of the flag away.

Still got to finish converting him, but the painting is going on as I go to try and meet this deadline. I know it may seem like I've got heaps of time but back end of the month is already busy. You can also see the fire dragons in the background I'm doing. And the 2 Spiders, 2 Guardians and 3 Hawks I've got hanging around who can be my mission for next month.

damn i paint slowly ok then since i already started on some of that squad and i'm about halfway through the next meltagun i'll vow the same as before with a grenade launcher + a officer. that should be enough for a command squad right?

purchased the minis I need now, so I'll stick by my termie retinue vow. Assembled, undercoated and I'm ready to go. Finally get to use all the bling on the termie sprues!

I've got my wraithlord pretty much ready to prime. I'm going to try using my airbrush to prime and lay down the basecoat of purple, so I'm waiting for a shipment of airbrush paint to show up.
I pretty much pin *everything*, here's how we look so far.
edit: notice the rare earth magnet on the shoulder mount. I've attached one to each of the weapons so I can do easy swaps (and reflect battle damage).

Okay, I've built the 28 mutants, but I'm building more stuff as well so once it is all done being built and dry I'll paint. and take pictures.

After 5-6 Hours, Irusk is complete, I'll get some pictures up later, but he's one of my favorite models so far. Just got 2 Heavy jacks to go for this month, and I might (thought not part of my vow) do a manhunter and vlad for fun.
And if anyone's seen the rock/snow bases on brushthralls, its quite an easy process that turns out reall well.

Ok count me in. I vow to have a 5 man Dark Reaper squad including Exarch with EML and banner painted by the end of the month. All I can say is, thank God study leave is coming up otherwise I'd never get round to it! :P

I figured out about micro features on cameras..so I'll try that out when I actually paint.

I already finshed some 15 odd guys before the start of the vow, hence why I said finish the platoon. In reality, I have only 20 more to do.

All my airbrush paints showed up today -- after looking at what Reaper and Vallejo would cost to do 3 eldar falcons and 1 eldar fire prism, I went with some larger bottles from airbrush-depot.com. We'll see how it works out...

I did a manhunter for fun because I couldnt decide on how to do my paint scheme on my heavy jacks properly. The jacks are primed and have finished bases though.

Thats cool, I like the runes on the sword, and the camo is real cool :D. Also the eyes actually look like they are glowing!.

I love the paint job, but the astro-turf bases don't do it for me.
Speaking of not doing it for me, this is why you should wash stuff before you prime it.
Fortunately, it's skulls, so neatness is not going to be a huge problem. I'm going to shove it into the ultrasonic cleaner as-is, let it dry a few days, then re-prime it.

Not bad, that scheme is actually looking very nice on your Reapers in my opinion.

My IG vow encompasses these guys now (first and second pic, minus the cannon). I've gotten a lot of stuff done, and I only need to paint the guys for the bodyguard of the officer(one of the colourful guys in the last pic).

I like the milita guard, they look pretty damn good! I like that they are all dark-like, very 40kish.

Going to add a frew more coats over the white, some nice gold trip (which I've actually already done but don't have pics for) and some nice highlighting and other things I haven't decided yet.

Teulisch, marked you as finished. You've got a nice base job there, have you considered hitting the grey metal with either a thin black ink wash or Tamiya Smoke? And maybe a bit of weathering?
At first, I didn't like the hand-painted white symbols, but then I thought about how the hand-painted stuff looks on WWII armor, and they fit right in.

Damn you faust. Realizing I could do this fairly easily, I ordered some Vallejo paints ( I use gw, half my colors I wanted to use were shot, and my local store is out of blood red, chaos black, idiots.)
So I'll get those jacks painted once the paints get here. Promise.

I decided to do my wraithlord with an airbrush. I haven't airbrushed anything in years, but I'm starting to get the look I want. I'm going to have to go in with a glaze and smooth out the transitions though.
I managed to get sloppy and knock the wraithlord's head off the spray table behind 4 toolboxes. I haven't had the will to move them yet...

I know we arent supposed to change vows, but I painted my warcaster (Irusk) and am still waiting on the paints I ordered a week ago to do the jacks. Since they dont seem to be coming, as a stand in Im going to paint 42 guardians and 3 weapon platforms that I started earlier this month, its what I've been working on while the damn paints have been lost in the post.
I also painted 11 banshees when I got bored the other day. So i'll post some pics up and get the jacks done probably next month when my paint actually friggin shows up.

Nice start on the red! First time I've seen Scorpions this red (seen them done a dark brown/red before) though. 8)
As for my progress, it's been slow but he's slowly coming along (the arms are not fully attacked but I placed them on for the shot). He will get more lovin' tonight!! Again, not the best pic, but the better pic really showed how bad my first coat of brown looked so I opted to keep the fuzzier picture for now. ;-)

i am sorry to report that my vow of 8 guardians has no chance of being completed
about all iv done is assemple the torsoes and legs and pain their backs.
i would have done them except for unforseen problems (mowing the lawn, lost season finaly)
instead of painting them iv been finishing up my urukhai warhost (have an event on saturday and need them ready)
ill repledge my guardians for next month, but i make no promises there either

earlier this eveing, i finished painting ALL of my space marines. the total force is about 3850 points as modled, sans wargear. The terminators, which i finished last, came from the space hulk board game. no picture yet, as i dont have a camera handy, and dont want to move everything twice just to get a bad picture. my oldest 20 marines are from the 2nd edition box. I originaly painted em ultramarines because thats what was on the box front.
next on my list, im my imperial gaurd. only about 25 troops to go there, and then the genestealer cult magus and hybrids... bwahahaha :D
I have some evil plans to run them as genestealer cult. once their ready, i need to finish paiting all my genestealers, so the patriarch (broodlord?) can bring in the second detachment of the cult :)

Yep, that's the modified orange and black colour scheme of before. Got to get the waystone and the pouches and stuff done, then see what it looks like.
Unfortunately, if the scheme doesn't work once the pouches are done I'll end up breaking my vow, but hopefully it'll look okay.
The plan is to do the pouches in brown (leather) and I'm in two minds whether to do the chainsword in blue (the other scheme colour).
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Okay, complete, 9 scorpions and exarch.
Unfortunately my camera has decided to fling an epi and die on me. I'll try to get a shot on Friday with the works digi camera (got BSI in Tuesday/Wednesday and then going to see Dr. Bunhead on Thursday).
Just to gen you in , chainsword was done in a bronze kind of affect, shuripistol left black but with blue accelerator guide.

I got brake fluid a few days ago and it seems to be working. The break fluid very slowly dissolves the paint, so I won't paint any more Jetbikes this month (luckily I painted enough to fullfill my vow).
I didn't want to be lazy, so I started painting Karandras - The Shadow Hunter.
Got to add a few more highlights and finish the base, hope you like him.

Oh, well I base all my mini's anyway, its just I have other stuff to paint that has to get based as well, and I like to base as much as possible at once, which is why I am asking.

I'm torn on the basing thing. Personally, I don't think a mini is complete until it is based, but a lot of people paint the base a solid color and they're done.
I'd tend toward optional, but am willing to hear discussion.

Well, I would do it, but it is a bit of an inconvenience for me at the moment, as I have 2 kroot squads and 2 hammerheads to paint first before I can base everything at once.

I havn't based my vow squad, but that's because I'm waiting to complete the whole army (one more squad, a character and a vehicle), then do them all in one go. Yeh, I was going to stop at 1500, but can't resist those assault termies (then of course you need the chappie, the LRC etc.).

I would say at the very least a base should be painted. It doesn't take very long to do and it's true that an unbased model doesn't look finished. I guess it would depend on what "table ready" means. If it goes by GW table ready, then the model requires 3 colours and to be based. If it goes by friendly game table ready, then it's pretty much up in the air.

I think requiring "painted bases" is adequate. It takes 30 seconds to paint a base black. I'll update the rules for July.

I will likely be breaking my oath as I don't see myself finishing my dreadnought tonight. I tried some different approaches to painting the bones and such on him and ended up redoing most of it as some experiments fell through (hey, you have to try stuff sometimes!!). Gonna give him another push tonight but he's not going to be "finished enough" for me to complete my vow.
Congratulations on all of you who did complete yours!!
BTW I like the 2 month vows better (for those of us with less painting time at our disposal).
