Yeah, to be honest both Formations suit my vision and suit the fluff perfectly. I've been listening to a couple of the Horus Heresy audiobooks today and I am really glad that I made the choice of Raven guard, even if they aren't the most competitive.
Here is a little WIP of my first combat squad, I am waiting for some Forgeworld Raven Guard shoulder pads to arrive and they need basing but for the most part they are done.
The squad has taken me quite a while to paint up to this point but just looking at them it's well worth it, possibly some of my favourite models I have painted so far.

I'm always a fan of people who chose their armies more on what's cool in both background and models, rather than rules. And yes, the raven guard would be one of my more favorite ones. I'm glad you seem to be improving in how to use them already!

Thanks Vonny, I love the fluff for the Raven Guard and there is something about their tactics that appeals to me. Generally I've never done well with Power Armour armies, I've tried Dark Angels, Grey Knights and Chaos Marines and never had a huge amount of luck so now I am determined to learn how they work properly and how to wield them effectively. Even after just two games I've found the games a bit more rewarding than using my Eldar, last nights game was one of the best I've played in months.

Looking very nice Auric. Love the green trim... what company is that anyway? Also very happy to see you getting FW Shoulder pads. I used to think they were an "extravagance" but as soon as I decided to do my own Space Marines I had to have them no questions asked lol.

I'm also glad to see you found your last game rewarding, I think I didn't catch the tone of your last post properly. Anyway very good stuff Auric can't wait to see more. Keep us posted bud!

Thanks Cav, the fluff has changed a bit with the new book. Traditionally the green trim denotes a member of a tactical squad (then Red for Assault, Yellow for Devastator, Complete white shoulder for Veteran) but it's now been changed to be a member of the 4th company. I am sticking to the old traditional way of doing it though. Will make the army a bit more colourful.
I did baulk at the price of the forgeworld ones a bit but I think it'll be worth it when I get everything painted up. I received the first 30 of them this morning so will get the first couple of squads up and running shortly.

Just another small little update, decided to paint up the Razorback despite having not finished the previous squad. It's got a couple of little bits yet to do (like a couple of Logos etc) but again I am really happy with it.

I quite like that there were some deviant ways of showing company, squad and squad type back in the day, and am a bit sad they changed that. How did they denote company and squad number in the old style?

To be honest Raven Guard have always been one where there isn't much agreement on how to do it!
If I remember rightly company number was usually painted in a circle on the left knee pad or thereabouts. This wasn't always the case as they often showed them with large White Ravens painted on the lower part of the left leg which would have covered this up.
I do remember a few people painting squad number again in a circle but within the design on the right shoulder pad (Tactical Arrow, Assault Cross etc). One of the recent Horus Heresy books seems to have changed this again too.

My plan is to stick with the colours for battlefield roles, and I am thinking company number in white on left knee. Probably not going to worry about squad number though haha

Oh wow, awesome looking Razorback Auric. Really crisp highlights, and the white blocking looks fantastic! The lights, lenses and banner all look great too. Fantastic!

About the heraldry and whatnot I feel your pain! I wish the Dark Angels had a better reference guide for their heraldry cause its all over the place. I hate having to wing it, then you run into some obscure image showing you the exact way long after you've completed a model. I'm relying on Rogue Trader, and some scant offerings from FW to do my heraldry and its not easy! Anyway I love what you've done so far. Keep it up!

Apart from the basing, these guys are all pretty much finished!
Really happy with how they've turned out, it's gonna take me a fair while to get the army painted up (Certainly longer than the Corsairs took me!)
I was however very naughty earlier, despite having 2 more Combat squads to paint, a 10 man assault squad to build and paint and 2 5 man Scout squads to build and paint I slipped and accidently bought myself some Mor Deythan models on ebay........ 5 man squad with Combi meltas, will make a perfect Sternguard squad!  ;D

Oh hell yeah! These these look fantastic. The Sarge looks absolutley killer. The combi-melta looks great. Really reminds me of Captain Tycho from the Blood Angels with the pose and the gone and all. Killer paint job as always Auric.

Also can't wait to see Mor Deythan. I tried to convince my brother to get them as Sternguard for his Revilers but he's so picky he said no. Those models are killer and I can't wait to see them. Anyway really enjoying this project so far. Keep it up!

Cheers guys!
Another little update although nothing particularly exciting! The first Combat squad and Razorback are finished and I've managed to get the first scout squad built and painted.
Got 2 more Combat squads, a 10 man assault squad and another Scout squad all in need of painting plus the Mor Deythan should be here over the next couple of days.
Here are the scouts:

Looking excellent Auric. Super clean, with nice details as always. Also my compliments on the choice of basing. You don't often see dark earthy basing but it looks really cool with the armor. Anyway excellent stuff my man keep it up!

Cheers Cav, I may still flock the bases slightly to give a little bit more contrast up against the Black armour but will possibly do a test model to see if I like it first. Sadly I've been working loads over the last week or so and haven't actually got anything new done since the scouts! Oh well, got a holiday to pay for I suppose!

Had another game with my Raven Guard last night against a Dark Eldar army and it came out as my first win with them!
We played a 2,000pt game with me using a similar list to my previous game but with the addition of Coteaz and some inquisition allies (including a Vindicare) He was using a fairly typical balanced Dark Eldar Army- Warriors in Raiders, Blasterborn in Venoms and a Deepstriking Dark Artisan formation.
I won't go into a turn by turn game report as to be honest I can't remember most of it!
There were a few learning points though:

Positive
  • Getting Hammer of wrath every turn that your assault squad charges is really helpful, did a lot of damage with these guys
  • Scouts giving Ignores cover to Devastators can be really handy, especially against jinking units
  • Being able to bring in Reserves on Turn 1 can be massive, really helps getting a strong Alpha strike

Negative
  • Raven Guard are not an "All round" army, seemingly needs to be either ultra aggressive or sit back. Sadly the Talon Strike force doesn't really lend itself to an all out aggressive build so well.
  • The Ravenhawk formation is very expensive for what it brings, The Storm Raven did well enough but the formation itself did not do anywhere near enough damage for it's points cost
  • Definitely need something harder hitting in the first turn, going to have to look at Shadowstrike Kill team/ Sky Hammer annihilation force.

*Excuse the proxies!*

Thats awesome Auric, congrats on the win. Not super familiar with a couple of the formations you listed (Talon Strike, Ravenhawk) but yeah you gotta either be all out aggressive or if that isn't going to work, hang back lurk in the shadows and pounce when they get close (sort of like I run my Scorpions).

Their ignore cover mechanics are really fantastic and make them a very good matchup against Eldar, Dark Eldar and even jinking Tau drones and whatnot.

Ravenguard from what I've seen/read are a very good counter against elite xenos armies, yet struggle a bit against things like Battle Company. I know for sure that I REALLY fear things like Skyhammer and Shadowstrike team. I was listening to Signals from the Frontline (from monday of this week) and they were talking about American east-coasters loving the Shadowstrike Team rocking them with all Thunder Hammer/Storm Shields which is exactly what my brother is going to run them as. They aren't going to live the whole game but can terminate so many ultra important units and control the 1st 2 turns with their reserve manipulations its crazy.

Still very much a thinking mans army but a super fun one with great offensive output when you can put it together.

Anyway bud great stuff, I'm loving following this army. Keep it up and can't wait to see the next batch of models!

Great to see how you learn stuff around your army fight by fight, battle by battle. Great to see you learn through the game :)

Cheers guys!
@Cav yeah I think the formations are definitely the way forward, once I've got the models I think I'll be trying a CAD with the Skyhammer and Shadowstrike formations together. See if that works better than the Talon Strike Force (Their own Decurion style detachment) I like the idea of the Thunderhammer/ Storm Shield Vanguards but I just can't get away from the twin Lightning claws, you can't get much more fluffy than that!

On a models note I have purchased more but at the moment I am no further on the painting side.
I do however have a fever and the only cure for that fever is more drop pods!

This will give me 4 for the moment which is enough for me to use the Talon Strike Force and add the Skyhammer in for good measure :)
I have also added my Mor Deythan (Sternguard), I need to do some cleaning up of mold lines etc but I think these guys will be the next to get painted.

Oh hell yeah! There they are... one of the most badass squads of all time. They look absolutely sick. Glad to see those pods in the mix as well.

Hmmm so you are going to go all claws? You know that means you pretty much HAVE to get the Dark Fury Assault Squad.  8) Man are the FW Ravenguard models unbelievable or what?

But in all honesty I do recommend at least a hammer or two, so if you run into a Wraithknight or something you can tag him up. But I guess there is no real rush, you could always wait and do the claws first, and a sort of specialist "monster hunter" squad at some point down the road. Either way its gonna be awesome.

Anyway can't wait to see some paint on the Mor Deythan. I'll try and share some pics of my brothers Revilers (Ravenguard successors) he just got some Sternguard himself! Anyway bud great stuff, keep it up
