How big? City sized, country sized (with some White Out, of course), or bigger than that? Actual maps of places here in the Real World are good places to start.

i love that... country sized is a very cool afghanistan map to claim territories over... whilst the city sized is the other well known warzone of our age... Liege, in Belgium... lol

another easy way to make a map is to take an area and divide it using the major roads, or you could even use counties/munincipalities etc to break it down more.
legion of sickness
lord of misery
after my death I rise in immortality
unleashing the horror my words are infected
feast on my rot
I am resurrected

resurrection of the rotten
resurrection of the dead

yea, its all about the style of map you want... how large and wide an area it is to cover - or how tight the controlled zones are to be.

Google Earth is your friend in situations like these...

That's the first thing that came to my mind...

If you want something of that size then I think that would be a perfect map.
Already set up for territories and already printed on nice big sturdy cardboard.

I don't know wouldn't axis and allies work better (set into factions?)

Riskhammer. That sounds like amazing amounts of fun. You play risk, and when you have a battle, you play a 40k game to decide it. Each soldier represents like what... 50 points for an army? Tha'd keep the fights reasonably small and fast, though playing that would take months if both people are decent players.

You could also try computer games. Civilization seems a good game to get a map from, it contains a grid, it's colourful and clear, and it contains various resource animations to which you can attribute a campaign bonus.

VASSAL.

There are some great boards, and if you have enough time, you could make a module so it would work.
Whoa there.

They were objectives that you got bonus points for. If you were in control of them at the end of the campaign.
