Massive update!
Lovely painting as usual but I am another one that agrees when it comes to non-GW models. As much as I do love to complain about certain aspects of GWs business we are spoilt by some of the models they produce and they know that. There are very few companies that can even come close to the quality that GW are able to put out. I tried painting up some of the Mantic Forgefathers and to be honest I was really quite disappointed. Was wanting to make a Squat army but it didn't work anywhere near as well as I had hoped.

Hey Loosh great work as always. Yeah I feel you on the non-GW models. Doing comission work whenever I work on non-GW stuff I'm blown away by just how different it is... and different in a bad way. Not the hugest fan of the models pictured above, but I'd love them for D&D did you get them for a good price? I'd love to have something similar for my battle-mat, but I may just use ye-old Hero Quest instead... lol. At least the paint jobs look excellent if the mini's are a bit lackluster.

I picked them up as part of the Dungeon Saga kickstarter. That meant I got a tonne of minis at way less than retail price. Which unfortunately means I have all the minis from the expansions out in the garage waiting to be painted. Seriously, some of those make the undead sculpts look like the work of a master artisan!

In reality, I think the quality of the Dungeon sage stuff is about on a level with the Advanced Heroquest stuff. Which is over 20 years old.

The rules and the game seem fun enough, if I ever get round to playing it, however I wish that I had known that GW was going to restart boxed games and the specialist lines. Had I known that, I would have just waited for the Silver Tower game which has some absolutely beautiful sculpts.

The Grukk Facerippa came out fantastic though! What a model, I love how huge his freaking mouth is. His Squigg is legendary too. He plays like a boss on the tabletop too if you can get him into combat. Fantastic work on him... been a fan of him since Scorpion82 took him on a million-game journey last year.

Great stuff as always bud keep it up!!!

Use a mini to play a game with? Interesting concept Cav, I may try it one day!

In all seriousness, I really hope to at some stage. I want to pick up a Gorkanaut at some stage to transport the Boss and Nobz that I posted earlier in the thread. I know it's a sub-optimal choice, but it looks a tonne of fun to paint, and I reckon it'll look super cool on the battlefield.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words Cav, the feedback is much appreciated.

Yeah, I miss Squats too AP. I get that they didn't have a good theme for them in 40k, but I would love to see them make a return as they were my first ever army and absolutely kickass in Epic too.

I've seen some of the forgefathers stuff and was similarly unimpressed. There's no animation to any of their poses and the detail is so flat too.

Anyway. Enough of being bent out of shape about painting minis that weren't fun and came out worse than I had hoped, let's look at something more fun!

I mentioned that Bloodbowl was one of the things that I have been looking forward to. I remember picking up the game when I was a kid and playing as the Bright Crusaders against my Dad, playing the Gouged Eye. the early rules weren't great, but the minis looked ok and the Astrogranite pitch was cool too.

When the Bloobowl game came out for the PSP a few years ago, I lapped it up. Same when it came to the iPad. When Bloodbowl 2 came out on the PS4, I almost wept with joy. When I heard that the boxed game was being released, I almost had a very happy accident in my pants!!

So I asked my wife to get it for me for Christmas. She has. But that's for Christmas. So I have to wait to paint the somewhat cool Human team and then the mega cool Orc team. In the interim, I picked up the Skaven team and got round to starting the painting at the weekend.

All of my teams that I make will be based on NFL teams. I am a huge American Footballl fan. Have been since 1984, which I guess is why this game really sings to me.

So please meet the test model for Bloodbowl's newest franchise, based on the Baltimore Ravens:

The Biliousmouse Cravens:

The shoulder pad has been varnished using Ardcoat. I wanted that one bit of armour to look like it was provided by the team and almost taken care of in some way. Everything else would be rusty as hell. I will be adding a little weathering to the shoulder though, just wanted to let the Ardcoat dry properly before starting on that.

Back view. On future minis, the triangular armour piece will also be purple. I think that the numbers will stand out a lot more, and it will also tie the model together better.

Other side. Not that this shoulder is just a rusty piece of armour strapped on. I wanted it to look beaten up. Maybe that it has been taken from the corpse of another, less fortunate Line Rat.

So there you go. The minis are a dream to put together. They're 3 pieces and have very little in the way of mould lines. I think that the best feature may be the tails on these guys. So expressive.

I have a little production line set up, so I'll take some WiPs. Hoping to have at least another 5 or 6 finished by the weekend, or at the end of the weekend at any rate.

Let me know what you think, what I can do to improve the painting or colour scheme. Any input would be fantastic. Cheers guys!

Just a quick note on the Squats in Epic, as there's an army of them sitting somewhere among the massed boxes of Epic forces at home.  They were the only army in Epic I never managed to beat.  I remember my poor Chaos army in particular being thumped 83-10 in victory points to the Squats.  Their fire power made the Imperial Guard look feeble and that's saying something.

Back to your painting, and I really want to commend how well you use purple.  It's one of my favourite colours admittedly, so I am biased, but it looks great the way you do it.  That Blood Bowl team is certainly going to stand out in a very positive way in my opinion.

@Loosh- Wow fantastic work as always Loosh. Love those Skaven models.... Skaven and Dwarves are my fave. fantasy faction. Killer paint jobs as always but how bout that basing? Love it! Really eye-catching.

About Squats.... I really love them. I wanted to have an army of them way back in 2nd but never got a chance. So jealous you had an army of them... and they were your first army? Thats serious 40k street cred my friend. Do you have any pictures?

I actually thought they had a pretty cool theme, with all the trains, mining etc. I guess its kind of generic, but the little fluff pieces were amazing IMO. Trucking along on high gravity worlds, battling amidst those huge mining convoys against Ork raiders. I thought it was really epic.

Anyway great stuff as always Loosh. Really wonderful paint jobs. Keep it up man always excited to see your various and sundry projects!

@Irisado- And I'm jealous of you too! Epic Squat army? What the hell? You guys have all the cool stuff. Wow I wish I could travel back in time and collect one of those rare forces... especially for Epic. So cool... that game you played sounds crazy. Anyway I wish you had a camera so you could take pics... I think I may have to send you my old digital camera thats somewhere around here!

Thanks for the comments guys, it means a tonne that you guys are enjoying my work!

I did have a Squat army. It wasn't very big, it wasn't very painted (and what was painted apparently looked like Father Christmas...) but it was my first army. I only got into Eldar after White Dwarf 127 came out. The background for the Craftworlds was just so rich and vibrant, and the artwork that appeared in the issue of WD? Perfect. Well for me, that was and still is my favourite issue and the reason that I still play Eldar to this day and don't chase the Squat dream.

The Squat army that I had was probably 3 squads of the standard troopers, a bunch of Hearthguard with a Warlord in Exo Armour, supported by A Mole Mortar and Thudd Gun with a Living Ancestor in attendance. So not very big, but with some cool, iconic units. I think that the only times that I used them were against my Bro's Dark Angels/Crimson Fists, and I always used them with Eldar Allies. We used to commandeer the kitchen table for 2-3 days at a time, it was great! Not for our parents, but hey, at least we weren't doing drugs!

Right, a legacy update!

Back when the Olympics were on, I picked up some laser cut mdf terrain. Just one piece, so see what it was like. I instantly lost the instructions, so it was a little challenging putting it together, but it's a cool piece. I figured that it would be great for when Necromunda gets released, or if I do a city fight type board.

Hydrocarbon Power Plant Epsilon Gamma 67C, on the Imperial world Sanctus 4E:

The turbine is attached to a motor, so rotates. Also, it has LEDs threaded through the entire building, so it lights up wonderfully (I'll do some photos to show this at some stage)

Medivac point on the roof. I want to redo the blood effects, but it's a nice splash of detail and colour.

So there you go. It's quite big; bigger than a Knight quite comfortably, so it can also be used as a big, LOS blocking piece in 40k. It adds to my collection of terrain, so I can fill a board quite well. Although I do need to finish that cathedral that has stood half built for over 2 years now.......

Wow, what a great piece of terrain! Fantastic looking kit and a fantastic paint job. Love the colors and all the lettering, hazard stripes etc. look equally awesome. Dang super jealous... my brother and I have been talking about getting enough terrain to do Cities of Death with ruins on the outer perimeter, undamaged buildings in the center. This'd be perfect... where did you get it? Are they still in business?

Also a cathedral? Gotta get us some pics of that!

Fascinating about the Squats too... hopefully they come back.

Great stuff as always bud, keep it coming!

I'm glad you like the building Cav. The business is still trading, indeed they seem to be working on a new kickstarter at the moment which looks ideal for Space Hulk type games. I won't link them, because I think that may be in breach of forum rules, but if you do a search for wargame model mods, you should find it pretty quickly. They have a lot of stuff that looks really sweet, so I'll probably get another couple of pieces next year.

Yeah. That thing is my White Whale. It's freaking huge, looks immense, but I have a lot of work to do on it. Hopefully I'll finish the modelling in the New Year, with a view to painting it in the Summer. I'll definitely post some WiPs when I get round to working on it!

Loosh those Skaven look amazing! The painting on those models is outstanding!
Love the terrain too, I really should start making some more terrain for my local club but I have so many models to make it's hard to justify the time!
Keep up the great work!

Thanks AP! I managed to get some more work done on the Skaven today (My 1 year old had a very unexpected 2 and a half hour nap, so I got busy!). I now have 6 more or less completed Line Rats and a lot of the base colours completed o the others. I'll try to take some photos during the day tomorrow and get them up.

Cheers for viewing!

RATZ!!! I mean rats, nope I mean RATZ! 8) I love the purple, never thought about using purple on mine. Looks great. Drab and dreary but really makes the model feel good in a wicked kinda way. I love it. ;D

Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words. Fortunately, if you like RATZ!! then hopefully you'll love this update.

So, despite work really trying to get in the way, I set a goal for myself to complete the Skaven Blood Bowl team before Christmas. I know that I will be getting the Bood Bowl boxed game for Christmas and I really, really want to paint those minis ASAP. As such, I needed to finish the Skaven before Santa comes down my chimney, so to speak.

I will try to get more photos at some stage over the next couple of days, as I missed the good light window for the day, but hopefully these shots will give you a rough appreciation of the work that I have done.

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing THE BILIOUSMOUSE CRAVENS....

And the Crowd goes wild!!!!!!

The backbone  (or lack thereof) of the team, 6 Line Rats:

Star Blitzer and Captain of the Biliousmouse Cravens Skatch Sharpfang. This Rat is one to watch, as he has been blessed by The Great Horned Rat with the number 13.

Sketch's greatest rival on the team, with whom he vies for glory and the favour of the Horned Rat, Tretch Verminclaw:

I decided with the alternate Storm Vermin, Thrower and Gutter Runner to do something a little different with their colour scheme. In this case, Tretch got a little bit of Bronze armour. As they are Skaven though, it needed to be battered, old and worn. As such, I applied liberal amounts of Nihilakh Oxide to the armour to represent the Oxidation of the metal, and then brought it back towards Bronze a little by sponging a little Screaming Bell back on.

Next up, the throwers. Names are TBC with the rest of the team. Need to get my teeth into some of the Skaven Lore, or at least a Name Generator!! Just realised I only got shots of one guy. The other has more extensive fur, and Bronze armour too.

Finally, the Gutter Runners. I wasn't overly looking forward to painting these guys, as I tend to work better with metal colours and weathering than I do cloth. As it is, I think these came out quite well. As is always the case, the blending looks really smooth to the naked eye, cameras are dicks, but hopefully you get the impression!

And the opposite coloured Gutter:

All in all, I'm pretty chuffed with these guys. They were a decent amount of work, but I think they came out looking like a cohesive team, albeit a massively ramshackle team! I'm going to go back and touch up a couple of things that I noticed whilst putting together this post (wayward sponging paint being the biggest rogue), but other than that, I'm done and can paint up the balls and other paraphernalia in my own time.

Thanks for dropping by, I look forward to hearing what you think and where I can improve.

Merry Christmas all, I hope you all get whatever Hobby gifts you've asked for from Santa!!

Thanks Ynnead! I tend to find I'm a hobby butterfly. I have painted stacks of Eldar, and quite a few Skaven too, but painting just 1 army bores me intensely after a while, hence the variety that you'll find on this thread (although I'll probably stick to GW variety in the future).

I'm glad that you like some of my work, and thank you for stopping by!

You're so right, love the update. I'm a skaven player too as well as a few other fantasy armies, don't play AoS, just 8th tho. I send a pic or 2 soon of some of mine.

Glorious! Wow... love the rust, oxidation and minor blood effects Loosh. Wow so nice! Did you use the technical paints? I've been using them and have fallen in love. So many nice effects and textures on top of the great color choices. Love the whole purple/brown balance... fantastic stuff as always.

Always a visual treat... Skaven are such an awesome faction. If I play AoS I'm definitely going with Skaven or Dwarves.

Anyway great stuff man and Merry Christmas!

Cheers Cav! Yeah, I absolutely love those technical paints. I use Ryza Rust and Typhus Corrosion on pretty much any model capable of rusting. I now actively look for excuses to paint brass too, so that I can break out the Nihilakh Oxide.

The only Technical that I haven't used yet is the Nurgle's Rot. But I'm fairly sure that when the right model comes along, I'll get amongst it.

Always a visual treat... Skaven are such an awesome faction. If I play AoS I'm definitely going with Skaven or Dwarves.

Yeah, I'm really hoping that they release some more plastic Skaven in the future. As is, I have a backlog of a Screaming Bell, a Vermin Lord and 20 Stormvermin to paint up. All of the plastic range just has so much character - I think that the Doom Wheel may be my favourite model that GW have ever produced. It was certainly the most fun to paint.

Anyhow, production slowed down over Christmas, due to relatives visiting and the like, but I got a chance to attack the Blood Bowl set last night and finished off my first test mini.

Again, I wanted to have a team that loosely links to the real world NFL. I didn't want to use an existing them, such as the Orcland Raiders, as they have a set colour scheme. Nor did I want to borrow from Mantic by using the Green Moon Smackers (Maybe the Green Tide Smackers or something, but I try to avoid yellow colour schemes likes the plague.).

As such, after a suggestion from my wife, I elected to keep things simple by creating the New Orc Giants.

Nobody wants to know what happened to the Old Orc Giants (Just the Orc Giants I guess!), but I think that the Giant ate particularly well that day...

Anyway, my first test:

I may add a little more blue in future iterations. Not sure at the moment, but what I will do is vary which armour plates are metal and which are blue. That should help bring out the rabble nature of Orcs.

Top down view because, well why not?

Hopefully the colours on these minis are a little more true to life than some previous pictures. I grabbed a cheap light box that came through today and am really happy with the results. It also helped highlight to me that the eyes are pretty flat, so I will be going back and doing something to them to bring more life into the model.

Anyway, as ever I'd like to know what you guys think. Any input is welcome as it really helps me understand what other people think or would do in my place, therefore improving what I produce in the future.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

2016, you can get beslubbered!

Fantastic! New Orc Giants... classic. Being a New Englander and despising all New York teams I hope they lose! (just kidding). Fantastic stuff man really love the color palette and the weathering as always is really, really nice. Love the mix of metal and cloth and they each have a nice texture to them... really nice brush work as always Loosh.

Also the base looks killer!

I'm glad that you like the bases, they're super simple to do, so I think I'll throw up a step by step later.

Anyhow, thanks for dropping by and I appreciate the input!

Nice. I can't wait to see the cheerleaders and the squigball.

Ugh, I remember that Orc cheerleader mini. It was disturbing; and that's a nice way of saying it!

So I mentioned that I would put up a step by step for my bases. Not because I'm doing it the 'right way' or that they're any better than what I've seen on here - far from it. However, they are a bit different from most of the bases that I've seen on the site, so why not.

Step 1:
This one is easy. Use a small amount of PVA on the base and use a brush or anything else available (I use the textured base paint tool - the plastic thing in the Citadel Sculpting Tool Set) to thinly spread over the base. Dip into sand. Shake off any excess.

Step 2:
Allow plenty of time for the PVA to dry. I try to leave it either overnight, or at least a few hours to make sure. Then liberally wash with Agrax Earthshade. I load the wash brush really heavily so that by simply touching the base with it, it unloads and spreads without any need to 'paint' and potentially disturb the surface of the sand.

Step 3:
Dry brush with Terminates Stone. Quite a heavy drysbrush to pick out all of the raised detail.

Step 4:
Add static grass. I use super glue here, but PVA would probably be fine. I try to do several little dots or thin lines of grass, so that the muddy base shows through.

Step 5:
This is optional. I add either Nordheim Turf or Middenland Tufts. I can't speak too highly of these products. They add height and character whilst being dead simple to use. Again, I apply using super glue (Just because I find it easier to work with in small, controlled amounts. I try not to go OTT with these; limiting myself to a maximum of 2 or 3 tufts per base - and the smaller size of tufts at that.

There you go. A quick guide to how I do my bases. If you like it and use it, superb! If you don't, well that's cool too!

Thanks for stopping by!!
