Welcome to the Summertime Blues Painting Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date. This one will run for June, July, August. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES
1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up :)

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 10th.

last month, i finished painting all the marines i curently own. This month, my personal goal is to complete my IG. but its also my birthday this month, so im expecting to get slowed down by new models at some point :)

I vow to paint a platoon of IG catchcans. I have 30 guys, will be getting at least 25 of them done. (depends on if i prime the last heavy weapon squad in time.)

If i have time, i will be trying to get my genestealer cult magus and hybrids painted as wel... dont want all those IG brood-brothers to get lonely now do we?

Vow done for this month, 6 man spider squad fully painted and based.
If anyone wants to know the step by step I can lay it out pretty easy, plus I have a few left I might paint so I could do a wip photo shoot on them.

Also pictured is what I did last month when I got bored because my paints to paint my vow didnt come in (vow uncompleted part was 2 heavy warjacks). Painted 3 weapons platforms, 42 guardians, and 11 banshees.

I have alot of time.

So, my pictures are above, and I have a question for you all.

Im looking to do a couple squads of fire dragons, do you think i should paint them:

-In reds, they are fire dragons after all
-Stick to the theme of my army, and the blues/greys wont hurt em?

I think red fits them better, but I really wanted a very connected army as far as the paint scheme went. If everything is blue/white/greys including tanks, guardians, other aspects, would it make sense to have them be the oddball?

That said, I'll add 10 fire dragons to my vow (that includes an exarch)

Prolly more warp spiders too, but we'll see about that in a bit.

@ Target
Those are some damn fine Banshee's there. I love the dark blue look you've given them.
You're making the rest of us look bad; it's only been two days!
:'(
Perhaps you could paint the Fire Dragons a mix of blue and red...purple! With red highlights. I have no idea how that would turn out, but hey...

Good god, some of us haven't vowed anything yet!

Anyways, I'm vowing something, I haven't figured it out what yet, but I vow to paint something. I've just gotta go down into the basement and see what I've got left.

Purple would be good, but as far as colors go its just about my arch nemesis for painting, can never get it to look like i want it to.

Im still not sure what to do, but I might just wing the exarch today and see how it turns out, then if i hate it, strip it.

5 Swooping Hawks
4 Warp Spiders

Target--

Very nice theme and painting with the Eldar.  I say keep with the overall theme--blue/white/grey for the dragons.  There are two options from there:
--Use more grey and white to simulate the smoke and white heat generated by the meltas
--remain with the blues, but use a red highlight somewhere; perhaps their helmets begin smokey grey at the base and blend down colors to a red at the top

well i skipped last month an ended up doing about 7 other figs that are not warhammer or any table top game related (ok they are my current party in DD but thats different)

so this is my list for the next 3 month
1- Dark Eldar Archon, all custom here baby
2- Nid Gene Stealers, time to break into that mini army box
3- Space Marines, my dread needs some friends on the shelf

this should keep me busy enough

@ Targetawg:

You're just too fast! Nice army. I also think you should use the same palette on the Fire Dragons. They're no more special than the Banshees and Spiders after all, so it makes sense for them to be painted with the same colours.

I vow to paint one squad of five Arbitrators. So it is written, so shall it be done. (Unless I get distracted or run out of time, that is..)

@ Targetawg

I also think that you should keep the same theme as with the rest of your army. Perhaps you could give the Fire dragons red helmets to make them stand out a bit more and to show that they are the aspect of death through fiery destruktion. You already have a red hint in the army with the red eyes, and just doing the helmets red might not spoil the cool impression your army gives. :)

...another option shoulb be to dig out some of the alternative fire dragons colos themes from the last codex... but i cant remember any other than the red-yellow-orange one thats the one they used in the current codex.

ok a little WIP pic of my DE lord
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg436.imageshack.us%2Fimg436%2F7549%2Fscan00018yt.jpg&hash=44cbd569e978e286631f3954a0ad0a47b26c0040)

next to him is an almost complete Incubi, hes is there for reference of color or something similar.

yes the lord is blurry as can be so to help you figure out what you are looking at here is a description.
the top half is a black primed hellion that i cut in half, the bottom half is a blaster witch body that i also cut in half, these are the remains of my blaster hellion that i still have yet to paint.
total plans for him include a trophy rack, terrorfex, custom double ended weapon, and a "shadow cloak" greenstuff cloak.

still not sure how i want to paint the armor, something that will stand out from the rest of my army (see incubi for reference) but still look the part.

anyway more pics as i can scan them

As a slight off topic, those warpspiders I painted did excellently in my first game ever with them today.

5 Warp Spiders +1 Exarch in a 2500 point game, kills:
-6 Stealth Suits
-2 Tau Devilfishes

That being said, I'll add this to my vow for this month, another warp spider exarch, and 9 warp spiders, making my vow:

2 Warp Spider Exarchs
14 Warp Spiders

Those guys are just plain nasty. Finished the game with 2 alive, would have blown another tank but I put 10 shots into it and didnt get a single 5 or 6 on the last 10 rolls. Ah well, 3 tanks would have made them a bit too good. Dont want em getting big heads on me  ;D

Alrighty then, i got 3 of my shredders (One had a mold line I missed, and his leg fell off.) primed (white), ink with 2 layers of blue, then drybrush over 1 layer of white.  I may add another layer of white.  After I get that, it's black  on scales, horns, and claws, then highlight with brown. Gah, I decided that I put the blue in down too heavily.  I'm going t reprime ad start over today

I'll get a picture up tommorrow.

Also, Thagrosh is assembled.  I mostly likely prime him tommorrow.

Last deadline is the end of the month right?

In that case I vow 10 banshees (WIP from before), 20 Dire avengers (10 are WIP) and 6 fire dragons.

With possibly more thrown in ;)

Work in progress.

My 5 Hawks are primed and the first one has been painted up as a test.....which I'm pretty happy with. The others should be done tomorrow with any luck.

Since I suck at actually fulfilling my big vows, I'm gonna stick to three models...

- My Black Templars Marshall (Actually, a Sword Brethren model, because it looks cool.)
- My Emperors Champion, made up from the crusader sprue.
- A Wood Elf Lord with Great Weapon...(the cool one stood on the tree)

They're all basecoated, and I have schemes ready for each of them...

Templar Marshall and Champion - Black Armour (duh!) Red Robes, Bone Pads and Details (the GW black/white colour scheme is too harsh) The Marshalls Chainsword will be red, the champions sword most probably black, the others details figured out as and when.

WE Lord - Autumn scheme, Green/Brown Cloak, Orange Leaves, Leather/Bronze Armour, Various symbols and other things most likely in bone.

Also, all the models will be on large 40k bases, because it'll allow me more flexibility with basing...I'm thinking trees, and ruins...I may make them removable, because I do want to make a legal army, though probably only display it...I'm strange like that... ;D

Hmmm...

DO... I... DARE...

Turns out I don't dare, too risky for now. Month one will have to be the easy month.

There's not one whole unit here, but my army has alot of incompleted squads. Thus, I vow to paint my Warp Spiders (4). I vow to finish my striking scorpion unit (four scorpions to go) and to complete my Swooping Hawks (2 models) as well. In addition, I'm going to refurbish my existing hawks, because they all look like they've seen some rough times. Missing wings, glue buildup from repeated wing repair, etc.

Okay! First pics. I'm trying out something new with these guys. Im trying to learn to speed paint african skin tones. It's hard but I may have stumbled on a formula that works. Essentially I undercoat in Ogre Flesh and then layer on lots and lots of brown ink (a special mix of water, brown ink and klear floow polish AKA wonder-wash) and it begins to build up a nice tone and shadows. Then I just have to highlight with Dark Flesh and voila!

These pics are after 3 washes and are very messy washes at that. Next I'll do some more accurate inking.

Working on some sort of pillar rising from the ground which is going to have energy swirling around him. It should cover the +1t and +1S providing I manage to get it working like i see it in my head. The shurikats...no clue. I might just say "I didnt want to sculpt them because it would have ruined it, so for game purposes I wont be using them ever since they arent modeled". Its not like Id use them anyhow, he's got a pistol and generally will be a singing spear/mind war killer.

Thats kind of a secondary thing right now, Im just working on him when I get bored from painting the same models over and over :)

All the Wraithguard are stripped except one who is only half done so far. I've started painting the first Wraithguard, and the Warlock. The Wraithguard will have more or less the same colour scheme as my Guardians, although they will be made to stand out somehow. When I decide how, I'll post  :)

Edit: First 'guard is done up in basic colours, blue and white - no details, highlights, gems etc. done yet. I've started on the Warlock's cloak but have realised that for the amount of blending I want to do, I'll need a pallette, so off to the shops when I have time...

OK , going to have to change my vow again , due to certain recent E-Bay winnings and slow delivery time's etc .

8 x Storm Guardians
4 x Swooping Hawks

Hopefully the Exarch too , but still need to give this whole converting lark a try . So the Exarch will be a non-vowed bonus , for me and this fine thread .

Thanks .

This is due to my local hobby shops supplier's complete laziness.
So, far i got it all done but a warlock and a banshee.  But, i still got one more complete day.

Your vow is your vow once its locked, anything added afterwards is "bonus". Thats how i understand it at least, so basically if you fail to complete extra painting after the 10th you say you will, it wont count against you, but we always like to see more painting/more photos.

Ill have pics up later of my finished "jetbike farseer" (has an energy shield, you can see it in my other thread) and more warp spiders, who are getting gems now, instead of white dots. Im getting un-lazyfied. I should have a full squad of 10 done by tomorrow night.

Eleven days into the month, and I've assembled my models. Go me!

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv605%2FPaxImperator%2FAdeptus%2520Arbites%2FArbitrators_Squad1_1.jpg&hash=e10146fb041efe95adc20a13eb7ee44a7c5cdcf7)

As you can see, five Arbitrators converted using space marine heads and scout parts. Note the sergeant's handflamer, which counts as a brazier of holy fire. Bad use of points, but neat all the same.

I'm unsure how I want to paint them at this stage. I'm thinking dark blue armour, light grey fatigues and black and yellow hazard stripes on the sergeant's weapons. They'd look pretty dark though, so perhaps I'll paint the helmets white to brighten things up. Any thoughts?

ok, just finished my DE lords main body accesories, that would be a trophy rack (chaos vehicle piece) terrorfex (modiefied random DE part) and shadow field cloak (green/white stuff)

the cloak just covers his lower half and leave the front leg totally exposed, a little bit of chain connects the cloak to the back at what ive decided will be the shadow field generator.
so all thats left for this one before i start painting is to finish his main weapon.
double sided weapon, spiked ball with a sword topped staff.
pics of this part when i develope some more film

If you plan on the feathers being orange, go for red or yellow, depending if you want a darker or lighter look for the feathers. Personnaly Id suggest red with orange highlights.

Good gracious! I'm getting feedback afterall! :D

The heads are a Cadian/Space Marine hybrid. You start out with a marine helmet and remove the ball at the bottom, as well as the protruding bits all over the helmet's surface. You then hollow the head out from below, gauge out the eyes with a modelling knife so they form a single slit and remove the grille that would normally protect the mouth.

Then you take a Cadian helmeted head with chinstrap tightened. You cut away roughly three fourths of the top and back of this head, until it will fit inside the marine helmet. Leave the face untouched, because you should still be able to see portions of it even when the helmet's on.

You then glue the Cadian head into the helmet and glue both to the torso. Then use some green stuff to fill up the receded face plate, to ensure the helmet has one big smooth surface.

I finished my first ten about 5 days into the month. After going back and doing ALL of their gems (36 per model, so 360) I got burnt out. Got 6 left to do for my vow, I'll get it done, take me 1-2 days. For now Im almost finished a brand new avatar! I'll get pics up this weekend with any luck.

Hows everyone else doing?

Main colours are pretty much done, now all those beslubbering gems to do...

(hehe, I actually typed out "beslubbering", it's a great word  :) )

Edit: OK, it doesn't look like I'm going to get these guys done on time. Sorry everyone. Real life (exams and such) are somewhat more important right now, but I will finish them off when I can and post pics.

So i finished the avatar (looks amazing, ill get pics tomorrow) and did a fuegan to match my color scheme (by far the best model I've ever painted) so Ill get some pics when i can get some decent light tomorrow, possibly whip up a makeshift photobooth for myself.

I have painting add though, because I still have 6 warp spiders to do, and I uh...have like 4 days to finish em. But on the up side, Ive finished 3 display models for my army now instead of doing the tail end of my vow..

Here's the pics I promised, another of the avatar is available in the thread I made about em. Sorry for pic whoring, Im just excited about how these two turned out!

So I decided to do an avatar and a fuegan model just for fun and to break up the monotony of painting my army. Avatar took about 8 hours probably, the hair is green stuff, looks alot better in person, and hopefully the armor in the pics shows how many layers I did to achieve the dark red centers going out to the glowing edges of the plates.

Fuegan was a total of 4 hours, he's by far my favorite model I've done, let me hear it on em! (I know fuegan is generally red, but I wanted him to fit with my color scheme, I think this alternate scheme is spot on!).

Here is the WIP on my vow. The Warlock (not shown in the picture) still is only primed.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi24.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc30%2FViatorian735%2FP6260271.jpg&hash=909c1b17dac4f7453df23e5b7f16cfce231afee8)

Left to do is to ad the yellow colour to the head and cloth, paint the weapons black and to highlight it all.

I'm done with the painting - just need to get them based. I'd have done that tonight if I hadn't had to plumb a new washing machine in.

I've got some WIP pics - need to upload still. I'll try to take some more when I've based.

Here's a WiP shot of the Arbitrators. I've spray painted them chaos black, then layered regal blue on, edged with ultramarines blue, did a very thorough blue ink wash, and edged ultramarines blue once more. I think I'll do some more extreme highlights to make them pop, then call it a day for the carapace armour. I've now decided that the fabrics are going to be a light grey, the boots will be a light leather colour and all Imperial iconography will be gold. All of this to offset the dark armour. Still two days left. I can make it. :)

Pictures tomorrow, hopefully. Here's some very poor WIP pics in the meantime:

Allright heres my 2 wraithlords and my avatar that i did just for giggles lol.  I finished the rest of my vow, but its not on me at the moment, but it is completed.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi10.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa109%2Fdontknowjackshmit%2Fwraithlordsandavatar.jpg&hash=53590abeb5c5259f03b5521bef1c69e27a974c88)

If your wondering about the wacko wraithlord arms, its because, I ordered a bunch of wraithlord bits of ebay, with allot of legs, bodys, heads and the backpack things. Yet, I only got 3 right arms with the lot, so with a lil work and greenstuff, I got 2 wraithlords for $12.

I've just finished my scorp squad vow *cheer* I thought I wasn't going to make it (again) but 5 internet-less days helped a bit. I'm not quite happy with them as they are but they're definately good enough to play with and not look out of place in my army so that's good enough for me. I'll try and get some pics before this thread is locked if not I'll post them with the next thread.

The Wraithguards are all done, but im not able to do the basing at the moment and the warlock is still unpainted.

note me down for failure and a vow unfinished.

The squad in its current state. The warlock is from another squad. All for the sake of apperances.

Im gonna have to be a fail as well, after a couple of models I'm just not happy with the Grenadier conversions that Im turning out, the size difference between the plastic cadians they're based on and the Praetorian figures is just too much for me, I shall bide my time until I've got a suitable alternative.

And here they are.

The trousers had shadow grey, codex grey and space wolves grey layered onto them, followed by a rather diluted chaos black wash. The boots and other leather parts had bestial brown followed by snake bit leather layered onto them. The gold skulls and such had tin bitz, dwarf bronze, shining gold and mithril silver layered onto them, followed by a flesh wash. Metal bits are boltgun metal, with a chaos black wash on some parts. The handflamer and chainsword, my pride and joy, were painted with two thin coats of skull white followed by two thin coats of sunburst yellow. Then the black chevrons were painted on. The black was highlighted with fortress grey and the yellow with sunburst yellow and skull white.
